A lot of oly wl were packing a lot of muscle. Dave Rigert is the famous example. Current Klokov is built like an action figure, but his piss would melt the cup. Anatoli Pisarenko is another famous example. Sultan Rakhmanov was a block of muscle covered in flab like an offseason trey brewer from years ago. Rakhmanov is reputed to have Front Squated 770 for 5reps !!!!! No belt or wraps - Damn !!!
Also Pisarenko was unbelievably strong & moved huge weights- at a relatively light body weight
He’d be in the 125kg class now he was lifting in the super heavyweight class out weighed by
Quite a large amount at many comps.

Pisarenko in a lot of ways was the first modern superheavyweight. No belly ballast deal, which certainly helped the snatch. Sultan was an absolute freak, I fully believe that, especially in the days of pharm grade gas, restoratives, and all the technique on top of it..

The 80 Olympics were interesting to just see the change in the supers almost overnight. Alexeev bombed out and after that they got way more athletic and the snatch became more important. Chemerkin is probably the one real exception to this but he burned out quick. And an old Kurlovich was still beating him..

They very much were interesting times - it’s bollocks that they’ve changed weight categories
Just to get rid of previous WRs - it’s a very underrated sport to say the least.

Yes, familiar with this video .

As the youtube commentators have pointed Mr Orok ,had such an excess of brute strength, that he stayed with the overhand grip - not bothering with a hook grip.

Watch the Chinese teams training videos when you get a chance. Unbelievably strong. Very motivational makes me want to go train heavy more than ANY bodybuilding video.

Hard to believe they train 5 to 6 days a week for hours.  Makes me believe that over training is myth.  What I like about Olympic lifting is the explosive power.

Yes they do spend a lot of time in the gym sometimes morning & evening
Though the tend to train one exercise at a time for many many sets with
Very long rest periods in between sets - High No. of sets low reps & long rests.

The gym I use had up untill last year was the British Men’s & women’s
Olympic lifting Training base.

And those are elite competitors.  This training style would be a waste of time for a non competitive guy just training for fun.  This is probably why Olympic weightlifting has almost 0 popularity in North America.

Back in the 1930-50's you had weightlifters that were in the York Barbell camp and you had bodybuilders like those in the Weider camp.  These two groups didn't care for each other much especially the lifters thought bodybuilders were all weak sissies.  Bodybuilding won out probably because the benefits are quicker, better and take a lot less time.  A man can buy a bench, bar and some weights and build a beach body in no time whereas to be even marginally good at weightlifting you need a coach and years of training.

:D Love it. I used to compete in weightlifting aka Olympic lifting. That didn't last long. Trained briefly at The Sports Palace. PR's were 303, 373,  676.  110 KG Class. I was OK. Did much better as a powerlifter.  Oh... I was fat.

A few had a bit of an attitude until we front & back squated with them + plus I’ve always liked doing power cleans - as we could bang out 3/4sets with similar weights for more reps in the time they did one set
That knocked them back a few pegs.

Though I have to say seeing some of the big poundage lifted in the snatch & clean & jerk + the power & speed generated is Very Impressive.

It’s also getting the technique spot on is key - some of the young 18-20 females were impressive
In their leg development. I watched one 70k girl no more than 19/20yr old do 10 rock bottom back squats no belt or wraps with 330lbs & likey could’ve got a couple more !!!!

Back in the day many bodybuilders were also Olympic lifters. The AAU Mr. America was a big deal in bodybuilding. They would have to get athletic points by Olympic lifting the day of the competition. Could you imagine anyone in the top ten in the Mr. Olympia contest today cleaning and jerking 315lbs the day of the contest?  I bet not one could do it. Olympic lifting has little popularity in the US because we are saturated with different sports. The biggest one for strong guys is football.  All those explosive 350lbs guys would do amazing if they got into Olympic lifting instead of football. Why would they though? A lineman in the NFL is making millions. One of the most popular lifts for all football players is the power clean.

Today with the popularity of cross fit men and women are olympic lifting again. I met a little girl maybe 150lbs and she could clean and jerk 225lbs. I told her you can go to plenty of bodybuilding gyms and not find one person who can do that. Granted no one does the movement in bodybuilding gyms in general.
