that would be bob hoffman the owner of york barbell, publisher of MD and strength and health mags. he's 48 years old in pic.

Gordon Venables's daughter is supposedly famous writer Rita Mae Brown's father -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rita_Mae_Brown .
She mentions in her autobiography that Venables never claimed her, and it was a deep family secret, and she only learned of it after his death. She later went to meet with Terpak, Grimek, and a few others, and it was said that Venables was a terrible drunk for much of his life, and that was probably why he left.
Just one of those odd things you read and remember.

Hoffman was 48 in that pic? :o He looks like an old grandpa.
-
:D

Hoffman always looked a bit older than his age. I think it's mostly the hair loss, oldmanish high pants, and the absurd chest puffing he did in every picture with weightlifters.
Another odd look is Weider with no 'stache -
(https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uKMZhyt9nMQ/VkpwZ5DkfaI/AAAAAAAAAMg/s1DSwQisuko/s1600/1376510670.jpg).
He's way more severe looking without it.

You want to read something crazy.....Check out what Bob Hoffman did in World War I.
Guy was literally Rambo. During Hoffman’s service in the American Expeditionary Force, he was active in numerous campaigns and engagements including Fismette, Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, Oise-Aisne and Meuse-Argonne. Furthermore, Hoffman was decorated numerous times for bravery during the Great War, receiving the Belgian Order of Leopold, the French Croix de Guerre and a silver star. Hoffman saw considerable action at the front and was slightly wounded by a shell splinter on or about July 2, 1918. Hoffman was honorably discharged from the military on Aug. 13, 1919.

^ impressive....
I thought he just looked like an old schmoe based on the chest puffing with no muscle escapades.
-
In high school I found a book by Hoffman on isometrics where he claimed all the lifters at York had become incredibly stronger by only doing them instead of conventional weight training. *The real reason of course was they discovered Dianabol.* After a month or two of doing nothing but isometrics all the muscle I had built was gone and I was weaker on every lift. >:(
-
Joe Weider looks better without the stache.
Few men look good with facial hair and even fewer women.
