I also remember him at Gold's 91-92. We had a mutual friend, Benny Podda. He was always really friendly and approachable. I was in awe of him because I heard so many crazy stories about him. But he always took the time to chat with me a bit. When I told him I was a fan of Mike Mentzer he introduced me to him. Mike was always really cool as well and always called me by my name.

He seemed like a nice guy. His shoulders were a bit narrow though, other than that, great physique

He might have lived if he listened to his body more. He was getting ready for a photo shoot, and was on the treadmill for extended periods. One day his chest started to hurt, he got off the treadmill, rested a little, then jumped right back on. Whammo, massive heart attack.
I enjoyed his writing. He had a hand in training Christoper Reeve for the Superman film, which shifted him from training full body to mainly working back, arms, and shoulders with little to no chest and trap work. He did that to try and get him an exaggerated V taper in a short amount of time.
-
Did he ever have any triceps?
-
Don was a nice guy but don't piss him off! He ripped every major muscle group in his body x 2. He had migraine headaches and chest pain for more than 6 months before his heart attack but refused to go see a doctor. He loved training.

Benny was probably the most dynamic personality I've ever met. Funny as hell, tough as nails, trained like a maniac, and real intelligent. I was kind of a bookworm and was surprised at how well-read he was.
He seemed to have went crazy later in life and getting weird spiritual and living in a cave on an Indian reservation.
-
Eric?
You really can't stop yourself from talking to me and then in the same breath claim you don't give me a second thought.
Such a weird and creepy middle-age man pursing a complete stranger over the net. Such a boring life you must have. I am really beginning to suspect that you are quite the pervert in real life.
-
Don and I were good friends for 15 years. Many great stories.
I called him the day he died. He had been taken away in an ambulance about one hour prior to my coincidental phone call. So sad.
RIP Ripper Savage.

You were friends with Benny Podda...but heard crazy stories about Don Ross?
The craziest stories I ever heard were of Benny Podda. Was he a strange person? Seems like another "Zone Capone" to me, who brags about continually injuring himself at the gym because it makes him hardcore:

Anything I've ever read about Benny makes him seem like a complete weirdo, but the writer here insists that he is a nice guy...robbing a pharmacy of painkillers is not cool though. That's an extremely dick thing to do, and can literally traumatize people. Unless he had an opiate prescription for pain that they didn't fill because of their own incompetence, or something like that. Otherwise, that is not acceptable behaviour to me.

Your attraction and fascination with me is quite disturbing. I can just picture that lecherous grin on your dorky granny face.

Exactly where did I say Benny was a nice guy? Jeeze Matt, that autism really needs to be treated.

He was one of my favorite bodybuilders and I bought a course from him while he was living in the cave. ;D You say 'was.' Is he dead?

Great article - thanks for posting Matt 8)

Yeah, great article and pictures.

How did he train, bro? Some of the lifts attributed to him are rather...hmm...how to be polite about this?
Incredible, as in hard to believe. Five sets of 50 with 315 on squats, and a 1RM with 850? 800 pull? He looked very strong, but he weighed what, maybe 230?

Your reading comprehension needs to be treated, pellius. ;D Jk.
Check the VICE article I posted. The article ends with the writing stating that Benny Podda was a nice guy. I wasn't saying that you said that, although I was for sure interested in hearing your opinion on Benny! :)
And, to be clear, it's quite possible that a person who robs a pharmacy could have been a nice guy in everything else in his life - but I tend to think that that act in particular, unless justified due to Benny Podda being refused to have his prescription filled due to the incompetence of the workers at the pharmacy, was not justifiable.
An armed robbery obviously has the potential to be quite traumatic to the person on the receiving end of it. So unless there was some moral justification for Podda doing that, that really makes me automatically lose some respect for him.
And to post a story about robbing a pharmacy with a bow and arrow. What the fuck? Who writes something like that to brag about on behalf of somebody else?! I hate people who recount stories like that thinking that it makes them - or someone else - look cool, when it just makes that person look like a piece of shit.
The other stuff written about Podda was just weird, but that armed robbery story was not cool, and really took whatever respect level I could have had for him down a few pegs.

Didn't Don Ross make a Dianabol cake once?

Benny was pretty short, about 5'6". He weighed about 240 lbs when he had that part in one of Chuck Norris' movies. He used to train Norris at the gym that I worked and trained at in the 80s. He was pretty fat at that weight. He started working out at my gym right after that movie and trimmed down pretty fast. He was always super vascular and had that hard dense look that doesn't translate as well on pictures than in real life. I never really kept track of his weights but he was strong and trained hard and heavy. He came in a few times with Ray Mentzer and they both trained very intensely. He didn't do many sets when he trained with Ray but on his own, it seemed to be the more traditional methods. He was in the gym every day just banging away like a maniac. He was always funny and very personable. I remember remarking at the size of his forearms and how veiny they were and did he do anything special for it. He told me that it was just genetics from his mother's side. He told me that when she was young she was naturally husky and muscular that the gorillas at the zoo use to whistle at her.

I was using the verb "was" in the tense of when I knew Benny. I'm not sure he is still alive. It would not surprise me if he was dead. He was a crazy guy and had the potential to "snap". Things don't usually end well with those types.

Covid-19 from eating contaminated canvas during his wrestling debut

Jeeze man, read the thread. It's on the first page where it is described in detail.

No sir. It was a Dianabol pizza. Him and Grizzly Brown ate it. 100 percent true story.
He baked that pizza at his apartment in Berkeley. Wish I had been invited. The story was told and retold many times. It is true.

Marco Pierre White? Who is this Italian French Englishman?
Sorry, that was quite a UK reference
MPW is a retired super-chef - youngest ever to get 3 Michelin Stars - trained Gordon Ramsey - real b4stard LOL
He (in)famously turned to promoting Knorr products when he retired - he manages to cram them into every single recipe, so much so much so that it borders on being a YouTube meme
Just a passing resemblance to the Ripper

Hahaha. Did you see Ross pull that chair the little kid was sitting on? That was great!
And truth be told Ross had a terrible physique.

Especially for a juicer. It must suck to use loads of roids while working out an hour a day to look like a jobber on the wrestling circuit.

Always like Don Ross ....loved his fucking articles.....he was a strongman too with an act......breaking chains, blowing up hot water bottles and such.
RIP

Me too - seemed like a great guy from the stuff he wrote - and those stories of getting high on the roof of Golds are hilarious
That said - I just realised I am now older than he was when he passed.... sobering thought...
