Title: Weird question.... Squat pad the MantaRay
Post by: LurkerNoMore on May 20, 2020, 07:16:48 PM
Ok, so the LA Fitness is reopening here in FL 5/25.  I ran into the manager there and he told me that they used the downtime to put in some new equipment, one of which was replacing all their smith machines.  He mentioned that these were the newer style smiths where the bar was thicker than a regular olympic bar.  Now my gf likes to booty squat on the smith at times and she has one of those manta ray squat pads.  It is tailored for regular barbell diameter, which the new smiths will not fit in the smaller groove.   Does anyone know if they make those manta rays for thicker bars?

They're built to have a little give, so they might fit. Weightlifting bars are 28mm, Power Bars are 29-29.5mm, and some cheaper or extra heavy bars are 32mm. You'll be fine in the 28 - 29.5mm range. I'm not sure on the 32mm.

Edit - Here's the manufacturer in case you need to ask them - http://www.adfit.com/ .

Thanks for the reply and info, I went to that page but do not see anything related to sizing on it.
They have a tiny bit of give from what I remember, but not much.  Thanks again.

You can cut some of the plastic off and make it fit.  The manta will not clip onto the bar anymore, but the wider bar will still lay/fit into the groove.

Maybe you could buy a pad - we bought one for hip thruster movements for baseball, but it's tapered in the middle, so it sits high up on the neck like the manta.

Only like 20-25 bucks.

Interesting thought. You could hit it with a half round file too, it would be fast, and allow for a custom fit -
