Who gets to pick their own judges? Lol

Can you imagine a professional sports team getting to pick their own referees for the super bowl or Stanley cup or World Cup. Lol

Since I am perhaps the only national bodybuilding champion still posting on Getbig that Ron can fix my profile so I can change my avatar photo.

Vince, you can use my avatar photo.

I picked the best judges in BC and they weren't influenced in any way re the judging process. So it was a properly judged and fair contest.

;D , you got gifted that contest and you know it.

Wasn’t this the show you promoted and pretty much controlled? I’d like to see the photos from the Mr. Australia where you placed 15th because you accused Arnold of rape.

Ray Beck is credited with writing the article for Muscle and Fitness. I actually wrote the story but never got paid! Ray was too busy to do that as he was running two gyms and two gym

supply stores. I never was on a cover of a Weider magazine whereas many former Mr Canada winners were when Joe had his businesses in Montreal. He moved to New Jersey then later to California.

You not only fixed the contest, but also wrote the article on the contest (full of humble brags about yourself), and managed to get it published in a major periodical?

I started lifting weights in September 1958 in a basement in Kamloops, BC. There were photos of Bill Pearl and the Brunet twins on the wall of the one room gym.

The Brunet twins, Pierre and Yvon both won the Mr Canada title and I guess my dream was to one day also win that title. A German adonis by the name of Hans Gensow

introduced me to bodybuilding. I was a bit short for my age and I also had an older brother who hit me way too often. So lifting weights became something I continue

to do today. 62 long years.

In 1970 Ray Beck promoted the Mr Canada contest in Vancouver. It was the first time the contest was held outside of Quebec and Ontario. As it turned out only one

competitor came all the way from Montreal. Nobody came from Ontario which is Canada's largest province. So the scene was set for an open contest where just about

anyone could win. Ray asked me to select 15 judges to make the process fair. I did that but only 13 judges showed up. The guest poser that night was Chuck Sipes

and he also judged the contest. Imagine my surprise being declared the winner later that evening in the high school auditorium.
when all is said and done you achieved a National title in your prime, a lot of people can not even point back into their OWN history too actually having a prime or a achievement of note wether that was Local, National or international level in a competitive situation well done Vince.

Vince did ,he talks about it here

"Here is the first image online of the IFBB -MR CANADA letters. This was invented by myself and built totally by myself in my engineering factory. I tried to sell the design to Office Max and Staples but they were not interested. So these letters  has cost me over $100,000 to patent and build. Surely are the most expensive letters  ever installed on a bodybuilding stage .

These letters were conceived in 1986, and first conception on paper was in 1991. I obtained patents from the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Germany and Australia. You have to apply to each country. Then you have to pay thousands of dollars per year to maintain those patents.

I wouldn't patent anything in the future! I built the first version in 2001 and then modified it several times since. The last major surgery occurred last year. I am quite pleased with these letters There are many adjustments and are  really  complex letters  with lots of angles needed. It works, though! Lots of stainless steel on the prototype. I will paint it silver soon.''

Ken Rivard at the 1970 Mr C. Vince saw him as his closest competitor -

"Gosh, imagine the nerve of Melvin Goodrum to post his photo in a thread about me? To tell the truth I always have a problem about where to file photos of this dude. I keep him under 'bodybuilding' but that is only for convenience.

I have campaigned for Ron to give Melvin his blue stars for competing but I guess even Ron has standards. Come to think about it, I don't have those damn stars, either.

Everyone is entitled to comment about contests and competitors. However, there is a sense in which it helps if you have paid your dues. I doubt Melvin has the credentials to bag anyone else out there who competes. That doesn't stop him from putting down others. He has to realize that the Mr Canada contest that I won was 40 years ago this year. He wasn't even born then. I look at the photos and the standard wasn't that high but it still wasn't easy to win. Ken Rivard had an awesome upper body. I mean, what would Melvin know?

Here is a photo of Ken winning best back during the 1970 Mr Canada. He won best back, chest and arms. I got best legs and best poser.[/color] Walter won best abs and most muscular."

Red highlight of odd note.

Two CIBA GIEGY dbol would have been the equivalent of 10 ( or more ) of the dbol available today. Plus, didn’t he have a doctor giving him deca)

I won the title in May 1970. I emigrated to Australia in January 1971. So I didn't get to enjoy being Mr Canada much while at home.

I returned to Canada in 1980 and 1987 as well as 2000, and 2004. I doubt any of the current bodybuilders knew who I was!

Had I gone to LA I might have gone further in bodybuilding. Wife was pregnant so I had to find a steady job quick smart. No work

in Vancouver so off I went to Sydney, Australia.

Here is a Photoshop of what I could have looked like had I gone to California and tried Deca Durabolin.

I appreciate some of the recent comments. You know, way back even before Wes I was reading the muscle magazines from cover to cover.

I guess I embraced the ideals of truth telling, integrity and clean living. Never smoked or took drugs. I have a beer or a glass of wine

a few times a year. I didn't have to admit I took Dianabol but what the heck, I don't tell lies about bodybuilding or reality.

So I picked the judges! Ask Ray Beck in Vancouver about it. I was working for him in one of his gyms. He was busy and so Roz and I helped

him organize and promote the contest. I remember going on TV during a wrestling show in Vancouver and doing my posing routine!

In Vancouver in those days contests were controversial. So I liked the NABBA judging system where you have heaps of judges.

So we ended up with 13 judges. Chuck Sipes was the head judge and the rest were local known bodybuilders many of whom had

won titles. Ken and I got 12 of the 1st place votes and Philippe Alfani got the last one. So three of us were placed first by some of the judges.

I had no idea I had won so it was a big surprise. Even after the contest Ray was too busy to write to the magazines so that was left up to me.

I gave Ray credit in Muscle and Fitness and An Observer in Ironman.

I was the first guy outside of Quebec or Montreal who won the title. Ray took me down to the Vancouver Sun newspaper the next day but

they weren't interested in doing a story. Ray had to take out an ad in the paper to announce that I won the contest.

Chuck Sipes was the guest poser. He also gave a strongman demonstration where he bent a steel bar and steel spikes. He had Ray read out a message which

ended in "My God, my strength!" After the show a few of us went to the hardware store to buy some 6 inch spikes. Chuck put a cloth around the spike and bent

it in one motion. Very impressive. We could bend a 6 inch spike, too, but it took much longer. I ended up bending a 7 inch spike.

Here is Chuck bending a steel bar. We didn't try this one!

Deca was what Dr. Walzak prescribed. I think it was he that encourage you to try it. I saw him during the early 80 and he prescribed 200mg every two weeks along with 3 tabs of Ciba Dianabol (15mg) per day. He didn't believe in cycling except for orals due to the stress on the liver. Two months on, two months off. When I first went to him he started with just the Deca injections. When I asked him how long should my cycle last he just said as long as you want to keep growing. I asked him about adding Testosterone and he said he didn't recommend it. He said that the whole point of developing anabolic steroids was to improve upon the Testosterone molecule. To reduce the androgenic effects, the secondary sexual characteristics, of Testosterone while keeping, or enhancing, the anabolic properties and therefore reducing the side effects. Even on the instruction packet that came with every Deca vial, a disclaimer was made that a complete disassociation of the androgenic properties had not been achieved.

Hi Philip. Yes, I met the good doctor Walczak in Vancouver in the summer of 1970. He was at English Bay Beach and we had a conversation. He said I looked good and could win the Mr Universe title with another 6 months of training in LA. Deca Durabolin. I was more interested in clearing my acne. So I never went to LA to have a go at higher titles. I knew he was gay. Eventually most bodybuilders can pick these guys. Well, I invited him to come to my place to have dinner. When he found out I had a wife he disappeared and I never saw him again.
I should have recorded the conversation. The way he told it many of the top champs were gay! I guess he should know. He mentioned the very elite living in California.

There is no way I would take injections with a big needle. I hate needles. So Deca was out of the question. I tried Dianabol a couple more times in Australia. Didn't do much for me but I got a lot stronger.
I suspected the chemist in Kings Cross was selling a placebo!  :o

At the end of the article I said my ambition was to beat Frank Zane because we had similar physiques. Imagine my surprise in 1977 when Robert Nailon brought Frank to our apartment at Manly. They were waiting for me. The first thing Frank said to me was, "You won't have to go to Disneyland, will you?" I asked why not and he laughed, "Because you've been in Fantasyland all your life!" Nailon laughed too. I thought Frank was a total jerk. Not that smart, either. Several years ago I did a beach scene and put a photo of Frank on the beach. It took almost a day to do it. Drop shadows, etc. Well, I posted the photo on Ironage and it was well received. So I decided to send a full size copy to Frank. Yep, still a jerk. He returned the email saying he doesn't open email from people he doesn't know.

Here is that photo at the original size. You can make a print for yourself or whatever.

I had a double bodyweight bench press.........not incredible but credible just the same.

Personally I think roids can be and are beneficial to athletes and others it`s just the abuse of them like the morons who compete these days that will ruin your health.

I competed mostly in the NPC where if I had the money I would have beaten far more people.................. ...at times I competed using Tesosterone alone a good work ethic and a Spartanlike diet and still placed swell while others were on boatloads.

To be honest I have never heard of you before. Who did you beat?

I said my goal was to beat Frank Zane. Obviously, not with the physique of 1970 but an enhanced one. Had I trained at Golds Gym, Venice, in those days I would have been properly

motivated. Lifting weights is a crazy thing to do....but showing someone is what can make it all worthwhile. Zane beat a lot of good bodybuilders in the late seventies. He was lucky

that Arnold retired and Sergio wasn't allowed to enter those contests.

Back in those days, 1980s, it seems that everybody that first started on anabolic used Ciba Dianabol, and it was always 1 tab three times per day (15mg) follow by Deca, 200mg/wk or every other week. When I was still a teen I remember an article by Mentzer who said that his first experience was anabolic was 15mgs/day Dianabol and 200mg/wk Deca. He was one of the first, if not the first, to openly admit to using steroids. So when I first hooked up with Dr. Walczak and he prescribed that same amount I was thinking it won't be long before I start looking like Mike -- lol. The naivete of youth.

Looking at Vince back in those days I don't think it would have been an unrealistic goal. He was mostly natural during his career and I think he only took one dbol tab a day. He can confirm and he has no reason to lie at this point. But, say, he took the standard dose everybody else started with, 3 tabs (15mg/day) that is still nothing compared to what the pros were taking. Taking Vince's Mr. Canada condition and add 15, maybe 20 pounds, of lean muscle and dropping to 5% bodyfat (he looks about 7-8% in the pictures) with a couple of tabs of Lasik a day before the show to dry out, which is very possible looking at his genetics with 600mg/wk Deca and 25mg/day of dbol, which I believe is still quite a bit below to what pros were using in those days he may have given Zane a run for his money.

Agreed.

Vince was not that far away from where Zane was in 1970. Who knows where he would have ended up after 6-7 years in the Southern California scene. There are still a lot of people who believe that the Zane “aesthetic” supremacy was a Weider construct to make sure the Mentzer Heavy Duty program never prevailed over the Weider Principles.

I took 2 Dianabol tablets a day. Most of us were afraid of getting cancer if we took steroids. Quite the deterrent for most of us. The guys who were using kept their mouths shut so it was hard to find out about the drugs. When I searched the literature there was confusion because many studies claimed steroids weren't effective. That isn't what the gym rats knew!
Zane was known as the Chemist. Well, he figured out what to do re getting cut. I never got those deep cuts in my thighs. Neither did Bill Pearl, by the way.

I followed bodybuilding very closely since 1960. There were plenty of controversies in the Mr Olympia. Zane beat a lot of the top guys and who knows what the judges were looking for. I always believed bodybuilding was mainly about getting muscles as big as possible. So the biggest guy should win. Like Paul Dillette. Paul was from Canada but never won the Mr Canada. He got disqualified!

Maybe the magazines wanted this clean cut, educated guy to be the image of lifting weights. Goodness knows bodybuilding has had its share of knuckleheads over the decades. I saw Frank pose at the 1980 Mr Olympia. His skin had a red colour. There he was slowly doing his favourite poses. The crowd didn't go nuts but he held the poses a long time. He just didn't seem like a big guy. All those fancy poses but no real size. How on earth did he win 3 Olympias? Imagine what Mike and Robbie must have felt losing to him? Well, that is all water under the bridge and talking now about those days doesn't mean much. I didn't like Frank when I met him and I can tell you had I been training in the same gym I would have been totally motivated. Heck, I was training in Golds when Arnold was there. Also Dave Draper trained in the morning. I was sleeping in my VW Beetle for a couple of weeks so I waited for the gym to open to train and have a shower. I remember enjoying training my calves then waiting for Dave to arrive and train his small calves. He used a lot of weight but didn't get much of a result. Nice guy, Dave Draper. Arnold...well, he always looked out for himself. What more can anyone say about him?

Compare shots of Zane with Dennis Tinerino in 1980. Zane was lucky to place 3rd.

It amuses me that so many of the champs figured they were great posers. Well, both Arnold and Zane had no clue about doing the front lat spread. Look where Frank puts his hands. Looks silly like that. Reg Park showed us how to do that pose in the fifties.

At the 1970 Mr Canada contest there was also a Mr Pacific Northwest for BC, Alberta, Alaska and Washington states.

No one came from the US. Ken Rivard didn't enter this contest so John Mikl, a junior came second. He won Mr Canada

in 1972. There was no contest in 1969 or 1971. Ben Weider charged too much money to promote the contest.

Walter Milner, guy with glasses in the back, won Mr Canada in 1975. He was from Manitoba.

By the way, most of us discover that shots taken from below the stage make us look smaller and narrower.

You boasted that you were a sponsored pro athlete...Red Bull was one sponsor. I looked but couldn't find anyone sounding like a beach bum.

You claimed you own several beach houses up near Port Douglas. Very nice if true.

I do not understand why a pro bodybuilder would not master posing.  It is literally the only thing they do on stage when competing.  Most bodybuilders are very dim individuals.

Zane a run for his money - ROFFFFFFFFFLLLLLLLLL!

I always figured I`d quickly become Roger Callard or Dick Baldwin !!  LOL  ;D

Back in 1968 I swam in the surf for the first time at Santa Monica Beach. I asked a bodybuilder if one should go under or over waves.

He told me to go over them! I soon found out that was poor advice. So, unlike Teutonic Knight, I wasn't a surfie!

vincent b seems to be one hell of a photographer. the pics he has shown of the 80 Olympia are classics and were used in joe's mags.(among others, rader, etc)
ridiculousness out of he way, if he designed that 500,000.00 bicep machine on his own, its quite brilliant (mechanical engineer talent wise).
but yes, a waste of time, money resources. cant blame a guy for trying though.
