The checker design or whatever you call it looks like a walnut grip on an old revolver- that's probably what it means.

actually the bottom of the dumbbell is grooved out to fit your hand, hence pistol grip.

Saw all this coming in Feb, so I bought a few old York roundhead dumbbells in early March... much cheaper than today's asking prices. Working out in my basement with just a few DBs and a bench is better than nothing, but it's no substitute for gym workouts.

But how exactly is that any different grip wise to holding normal dumbbells?
They should really be called finger grooved dumbbells

trust me the grooves are there.
