Paul Anderson lifting big on standards -

I, too, am a fan of standard plates. I even went so far as to buy the expensive Ivanko B-86 standard bar they offer sometimes to use as a secondary bar. There is a very different, far deader feel on heavy standard lifts vs Olympic, it makes for a nice change of pace. I understand the move towards Olympic, and when I advise people buying their first sets, I tell them to go that way, but there's no reason to hate standards.

No reason to hate #35 plates either, but that's another topic.

this 6 ft standard york bar could handle well over 500 lbs. they also made a 7 ft standard barbell that weighed 35 lbs and could handle even more, it cost what a cheaper olympic bar costs.

pig iron
These old plates were made better in my opinion. sure iron is iron but they just seem better quality. I doubt very much if York even make any products in the US anymore. very sad.

it's funny how the ads in the mags changed from the early days to now when the publisher realized that barbells were a onetime purchase but supplements were an ongoing cash cow. ::)

York plates are made in Asia.

Bars made in Canada near Toronto.

I think misc items like ply boxes and platforms still made in USA.

The current owner of York is Canadian and I think has a foundry or quality manufacturing facility there.

The plates are cheaper to make in China.

Anyone who has more info please contribute.

Funk might know more.

Chinee can make some good stuff.

Whatever the specs ask for, they can make it.

If the specs call for crap, they make crap.

York sold most or all of their US factories (I'm not sure who handles the gym quality benches, racks, etc....). They do have good relations with York Canada, which is a related company, so the high end bars, plates, and other things go through them now. York Canada still does well, and has its own foundry, machine shops, etc.... in Ontario.

There was a bit of a scandal years ago, when York USA tried to switch all the bars to Chinese manufacture. There wasn't a huge reduction in price, and there were a few embarrassing cases of the sleeves breaking, so the high end bars were moved to Canada. Some of the higher end plates are / were made there and the US too, but a look at the website shows that the Canadian plates are reduced for quick sale, so York might  be going all Chinese in the future.

York used to use a US company called Wolfe Machine / Iron Wolfe Barbell to make their high end stuff, but it got too expensive, and they didn't want to pay. Wolf Machine / Iron Wolf went on make there own line of bars for a while, and is in sort of on again/off again status now.

It's just really expensive to have any barbell manufacture in the US any more.
