Are minorities and poor white people going to keep hammering this idea or will the gov allow for affordable housing. Gotta love how its a race and class argument when simply its the gov that makes you pay out the ass for some dirt, tile, pipes, brick, wires and wood that you have to buy and build yourself.
The average poor family can build an entire 3 bedroom house themselves under 5k in materials
-
The average poor family has neither 5k nor skills to build a birdhouse let alone a real house.
That being said, there are people who build 5k houses and live in them - they are are called hillbillies.
The reason housing is expensive for working people is govt and banks.
-
They should stop being poor.
-
Housing prices depend on what people are willing to pay. Also nevermind someparts beat me to it. The amount of skill that goes into every new home built in this country is extraordinary. Go try and build a staircase from scratch without the internet or anyone helping onky you and your ingenuity. Or get a foundation level. The list goes on.

Yeah exactly^ no average joe can just build a house....

Just need 5k in bricks , plywood, 2x8's , 2x4's ect. You do need alot of materials and tools . But yeah people want affordable housing that means tax payers should pay for it right?
The best way to appease middle n low income folk is let them build there own, no red tape, then everyone becomes self reliant

You couldn’t even buy a lumber package for a 1,000 square foot house for $5k. I’d like to know where you’re buying from.

Problem is government regulations when they get an inspector on the property. Zoning laws, strict rules and fines, "safety" compliance code standards that can be confusing and expensive to follow. Building one's own home is the heart and soul of America, going back to the Homestead Act and before. Very hard to do now, unless you are in an out of the way, rural area. Fantastic idea to solve affordable housing though. After WW2, returning Vets used to pick out a home plan to build their own house from Sears. Rarely done now.

Only in a place like Presidio, TX where there are no building permits. Rising Housing prices are not the only problem but a stagnation of income. Minimum wage is 15 years old and it needs to be raised

Minimum wage never lifts the standard of living. As an astute businessman you should know this. As wages rise prices rise and the cycle repeats.

It actually hurts businesses because it means that people have less to spend. It's the reason why Seattle and San Francisco is a shithole with tons of tent cities. That's also why I live in South Carolina. Low cost housing, good income, tax friendly for businesses, etc. One of the few times that conservatism works and liberalism doesnt...especially the gentrification of neighborhood...running out families of black people to open up a Bubble Tea Cafe...🙄

I live in South Carolina too. I live here because the state doesn't mandate outrageous costs that I experienced in New York state. That's tax friendly. Seattle btw has mandated $15 an hour minimum wage and it is a bigger shithole now than ever.
Hourly rates should follow supply and demand. That allows the labor pool to adjust itself. For example, i just paid a freelance Solidworks designer $50 an hour because that is what a quality guy will get on the open market. I did find guys at $15 an hour but their skills were lacking.

Socialism aka "Communism lite" only works for those in power and their enablers. It is predicated on a mass population becoming their bitches. To do so requires them to remove guns first...

I lived in Sylva, NC in Jackson County. Lot of hillbillies up there that do that shit. Tar paper windows, wood stove, log or stick built cabins and A Frames...even seen military tents.
I dont care about Chicago but watch and learn
-
This topic always comes up with my liberal friends here in New York. They never care to hear the main cause of such high home prices here is the fact you pay 10k for 1/2 an acre of property tax. The high taxes on equipment, builders, materials. They would much rather believe the reason is greed from the builders not the government.

Vince those tiny dwellings aren’t approved for any sort of living in California. He might be helping people if he kept them on his property but LA County was not allow them legally.

This is very much like the affordable housing you see all over Portland these days. The city used to have the police roust people out of theses encampments. That is apparently not happening anymore. Portland is starting to look like a third world country.

Sears retired their "big book" catalog in 1993.
This is a Sears catalog kit home, The Magnolia. It cost $5,140. to build. The house still exists today but if you want to buy it, it cost over $1,000,000.

Marty is a dreamer. A gallon of quality paint is nearly $50 - $70 from Sherman Williams or Benjamin Moore paint companies.

There are many reasons CA is messed up but tiny houses arent the issue, taking care of the mentally ill is the biggest issue. LA county has more people living in it that 45 states, that includes NC.
While I agree the tiny house would seem like a better option than tent cities, they actually create more issues. What needs to be done is converting old warehouses, or mental facilities into homeless shelters. But property is valuable in LA, so until someone figures out how to make a profit from the homeless, the problem wont change.

Yep, lots of empty warehouses, former factories, hospitals, etc, not serving any purpose right now that could be made useful.

But they are not coverting warehouses....theres a difference between action and works. The tiny houses were paid for by one man...not the city and they tore them down. They weren't the best but better and more safe than those tarp tents
You can defend California all you want but it's a high tax, high rent , shithole. Deal with it

Walt do you think Nebraska farmers pay enough tax to help out the homeless on the west coast?
Taxpayers are paying for the homeless as is, we should at least use the money in a responsible manner. If the government can figure out a way to subsidize housing projects and EBT cards that can be used to buy McDonald’s, they should be able to figure out a way to house the homeless.

First off....let’s separate the people who are homeless because of REAL mental illness from the people who are homeless because of drugs, laziness, or bad personal choices.
If you moved from Ohio to Seattle because you “dug the music scene”, have no education or skills, and can’t figure out why you can’t afford to live downtown when you only work 20 hours a week for $12/hr., then I don’t care if you live in a fucking tent at Chernobyl.
But I don’t believe that the federal government or any other state should indiscriminately or disproportionately bail out California for the mess they are in, or the third world meltdown they are headed towards. So no, I don’t think Governor Fuck-Up Newsom should be reaching into the pocket of Nebraska farmers, no more than rich people from Silicon Valley should be paying for 7 generations of family members on welfare in Chicago.
-

I cant argue with this.
There should be some sort of "work/job/skills" for those on long term government assistance. As in they work general labor/maintenance for road crews, bridge improvements for 40 hours a week at $10 an hour (or whatever is fair based on the assistance they recieve) until they fond permanent work.

U can get or make windows very cheap. U can use a shipping container and with a 150buc grinder cut out sky lights u can make it very nice
Behr satin exterior paint 45 buck , high quality.

Had to look up tar paper never realised It was roofing felt people actually make windows out it in this day and age?
I think bituminous paper has been conflated with actual felt, which is a sheet of animal fur and probably the product of choice before petroleum science. There was a builder online years ago who was a proponent of actual felt as a building wrap since it was vapor permeable but became impermeable to water with exposure (as the animal hair expanded with wetting, making the matrix impassable. Hair swelling is also why you don't use a bristle hair brush with water based paints). Can't remember what his objection to Tyvek was but the dude was proudly dinosaurish about it and insisted he was right.
Seems likely that merchants just kept calling any roofing underlay "felt" since that's what everyone knew it as. Probably got to the point where if a guy asked for felt underlay, and they gave him actual animal felt, he'd say wtf is this, I want some roofing felt, lol. Kind of like how most yanks will ask you for tin foil, and you hand them al foil, they'll say thanks that's exactly what I wanted.
Idk what Melvin is talking about. You can't make a window out of tar paper. A window is something which lets light in and you can see through when it's closed. That's how glass works, Vince.

Technically nobody is paying for it because they are printing dollars to cover the already bankrupt system that has been long in place. The tax base is a joke with no balanced budget enforcement. They have proven that they don't even need taxes at this point. The whole idea of spending has decoupled from tax receipts, and the voters have no power to change it at this point.
-
they would rather see people freeze than keep open a facility like ASH which is scheduled to be ripped down. it was seen in the movie glass.
It is a beautiful looking building that ought to be preserved and given a purpose. Unfortunately, it can be considerably more expensive to repair, maintain and possibly covert existing older buildings than it is to demolish them and build new. Here in the west we are prone to earthquakes. Just making a structure earthquake sound, can more more expensive than replacing it. It is a problem many schools face because they like it appears Allentown State Hospital is, are un-reinforced brick and mortar. Not to forget that clay brick disintegrates overtime. Beautiful, historic buildings don't last indefinitely.
