... wealthy chinese, driving up property prices for regular Canadians.
As if it wasn't enough with spreading a nasty pandemic globally.
Those zerglings just mow down and destroy anything in their way don't they.

They did this on the US West Coast and in many other countries.

The government printed so much money their currency is worthless. They have to convert it to Canadian and US dollars to buy property.
They've already built too much luxury apartments in China that are abandoned and they want to buy somewhere that will hold it's value. That's why the Chinese government is so strict on people taking money out of the country. A property in Canada is their bank account.

So what do you do? Tell a guy he's not allowed to sell to the chinaman for 4 million? He has to take 2 from a Canadian?
Government proscriptions on private property aren't the answer. If you don't want China to own everything then stop paying them to make everything, stop paying them to sell everything, and quit kidding ourselves that we can farm out our entire economy yet somehow keep the money here.
Idk how. Maybe automation can outpace cheap labor. Maybe government intervention is necessary, but you do it at the ports where it has a broad effect, but even that isn't a long term fix. Foreign ownership of real estate is just a symptom. Either you stay competitive as a country or get gobbled up. That suited us fine back when we were the innovators and ass kickers. We best hop to it in an effective way and get back to that because no amount of government sandbags are going to change the tide of the market.
Imo China will win. It's an ugly way to govern but their society is cohesive. We're too busy infighting to compete. Whatever fruits liberty and capitalism might bear will be ground under the treads of an enemy which moves with a unified purpose. Not everything beautiful survives. We might have been born lucky in a blip of history when individual liberty exists.

Chinese are isolated and alienating the whole world.. The west is stupid and pre copied by nonsense but still is the great world power. If it ever got close the west could mobilise and take out the Chinese dogs...
If Biden gets in though, the Chinese will have a great opportunity.

That’s what happens when you’re rich, find a way to become wealthy and do the same

But how is it fair when the state of China doesn't play by the same rulebook as the western world? The have zero labour laws, dictator goverment, doesn't give a shit about regulations and laws in general, doesn't give a shit about patent laws copies everything. I can go on forever.
If we are to compete with them then we would have to create an equally shitty society.

Exactly!
If the points get too low, a person can't even buy a bus or train ticket.
And you still get some people who think a cashless world will be such a wonderful idea, putting all their trust in the government and who will naively say 'but our government will never do something like that!'

Corona is just training the people to accept more & more restrictions
people spoke about the cashless society some years back
they were called idiots. Today not the same stigma

The Chinee will never take over.
They do not create, only copy.
Their economy will implode at some point, well before the west. The meltdown will be titanic.
They've been feeling competitive pressure for years now. They are no longer the low-wage center of the universe.
They have many problems. Low birth rate, pollution, political, etc.
Let them overpay for real estate in Canada and the USA. Japanese did the same thing in the 1980s.
Toronto is a boring place. They can have it.
Breaking news:
J-Lo and A-Rod just bought a $40 million home in Miami.
Meghan and Harry just bought a $14.5 million home in Santa Barbara.

The Chinese are looking for a way to escape China. They have an infrastructure tsunami (sorry for the Japanese reference China) on the horizon. Google 3 Gorges dam China.
-
This has been going on all over North America for the last 15 years or so. The bad thing is when Chinese buy homes then they rent them out to ghetto goodrum's. They have ruined entire neighborhoods in my city, causing lots of white flight. Even when Chinese live in the homes they buy, most don't want to assimilate or learn to speak English. At least they are quiet and don't play loud monkey music.

Fair schmair when it's win or lose.
I doubt you and I will have to worry about it, but over the long haul competing societies will naturally select for the most effective. Even though our system utilizes internal competition to select for merit and innovation, which are nice things to produce, if we have no means of suspending dischord and unifying in a common purpose during times of conflict then we are destined to be victims of lesser systems which operate more efficiently.
The Roman Republic would transition to a dictatorship during times of strife, such as the Carthiginian invasion, and then revert over time back to a republic. We're so inflexible and married to our political and economic ideals that even small changes are damn near impossible. People would freak right the fuck out if you told them we're facing a threat which won't afford us the usual system and we've got to have an order issued-order followed dictatorship if we're going to get through this, yet none of those people would be in favor of the military canceling all ranks and adopting a majority rule voting system during war time.
Kind of talking out of both sides of my mouth. I wouldn't support suspension of property rights or counter-market forces like tariffs except in so far as they can incentivize action to steer the market to the point of their removal. On the other hand, we better figure something out, lol.
Bottom line is that representative democracy is beyond us. It needs those who are elected to do their job well and selflessly, and they don't. Its incumbent upon citizens to be savvy and tough, make wise choices and be willing to take bitter medicine over yummy indulgence when necessary, and that's not us at all. Everyone just votes for more bacon, and if you point out these two pigs are the last breeding pair we've got, all that will happen is they'll get slaughtered quicker.
Is there a secret government? I fuckin hope so!

Western (white) countries are weak in this regard. China and Japan among many other countries don't allow foreign invaders to but up their property or immigrate there. We have a weakness thinking that "diversity is our strength" when it really isn't.

In the USA we allow suckers to overpay for real estate and when the market crashes we buy it back.

Great thread/comments, guys. Is it just me, or is there a lot of very intellectual discussion here on Getbig? What's with someone who said the board comprises low IQ members? I don't feel that way at all. I think there are a lot of smart people here.
Regarding Chinese buying property in Canada, I had been aware of it for a long time, but I had no idea it was that extensive here in Ontario. I thought it was huge in British Columbia [especially Vancouver], but that Ontario was mostly immune. I'm not shocked it happened in Toronto, but I had never heard of it before today.
A lot of good points were made earlier in this thread, including the point about the Chinese parking their money in the West [and the reasons why], the Chinese printing their currency out of hand, and how the Chinese copies others. Yeah - that was probably a mistake to give them all of our patents, which they just copied. I once read that there were something like 18 fake Apple stores in China.
And other good points were made too - with respect to the Chinese economy imploding prior to the economy of the West imploding...that may well be the case.

Yes, there are very intellectual discussions with a twist of humor which makes them even better. Go to Quora if you want to see discussions by uptight people who just repeat political talking points while claiming they have IQ's of 160. I argue with those fucktards all day long. ;D

Well it probably ramped up the last yeats based on how the Chinese have been getting wealthier exponentially since early 2000's or so. So naturally they will be buying up alot more now, than say for 5 years ago.
Regardless atleast Trump sees this threat of China and does something about it. Your president Trudeau is just like our president just a puppet-politician, he doesn't serve the canadian peoples.

A lot of this.
The elites big plan is for China to continue to be a huge polluter, meanwhile on the surface the west appears to clean up a little (the whole climate agenda).
Then with China reliant on cheap but dirty energy the elites will start a type of carbon credit scheme which will see China get raped. This should all be done by roughly 2050.
