Damn, they are both gone now. RIP
-
NFL'er Gale Sayers also passed away.
Animal was looking pretty healthy the last few years, shame. RIP.
-
Was Animal from the Road Warriors saved?
No. He didn't accept your lord and savior and is choreographing dives from the top rope into the fiery pits of hell as we speak.

At least he's warm. It's been a chilly September so far.
-
Q. "How did he die".
A. "He quit breathing".

He identified as Christian, having converted to the Faith in 2001.

Tell us about it, please.

Does anyone here think that Road Warrior could have beaten Ted Arcidi's 705-lb raw bench press world record at the time?
I don't know exactly where Road Warrior's bench press stood, but I am fairly certain it would have been over 605-lb raw, in contest.
So the question is...could he have added 100-lb [possibly less] to that lift had he trained exclusively as a powerlifter?

1991 i did a chest workout with Animal when he was in town. every thing he did was impressive, the what stood out
was 6 reps of close grip (8 inches) bench with 5 plates and a 10 lb. on each side. super strict and i didn't need to even
put a finger on the bar. probably 30% harder with that grip than a normal bench.

Do you remember massive pro wrestler "Big John Studd"? Well...there is a video of him on the WWE website that shows him bench pressing "700 pounds".
I can no longer access the video here in Canada from the WWE website, but I watched it before, and it's total garbage. There is a SMALL chance that it was a legit five plates / 495-lb bench press, but I'm not even sure about that. It wouldn't surprise me if it was 405-lb or more though. Off the top of my head, I can't recall if the bar was bending.
But as far as Animal from the Road Warriors is concerned, these stories of his bench press sound legit to me.
If what you are saying is true, do you think Animal could have held the raw bench press world record at one point, or been in the vicinity of that record?

He was one of those barrel chested dudes just built for the bench press.
Being the long armed lanky type who had an okay but nothing special bench I was always somewhat jealous of those guys.
RIP

Owen Hart would beg to differ.

no way to correlate. when i could bench 3 for 10 i couldn't do 4 for a single. by buddy could do 4 plates for a triple when he could do three for ten. strength in one rep range could not be multiplied to a standard strength in another rep range.
first time i squatted 5 plates for ten Grant McReynolds (miss you old buddy) who was a former canadas strongest man watched and said i could triple 6 plates now. i put on a 25 a side on the 5 plates and it felt like it had doubled. i couldn't do a single rep.
but considering Animal was touring and wrestling every night, that was just another average workout, nothing special to him. i is unlikely that i met him at his strongest.

Great stuff, I love Getbig for people like yourself who have been there and done it and have such great memories.

Fair enough...but might you be saying that with the benefit of hindsight now?
I just didn't get the impression that Big John Studd's "700-lb bench press" was intended to be thought of as fake.
I get that wrestling is scripted, and is supposed to be sort of like a fictional TV show or something...but the video on WWE.com of Vince McMahon supervising Big John Studd's alleged 700-lb bench press, I don't think was intended to be thought of or viewed as fake. I think it WAS fake...but I think people watching at the time would have thought, even knowing wrestling is fake, that it was real.
And that's horseshit to me. As if whatever John Studd could actually bench press wasn't as unattainable as it was [given that his steroid and GH/PED abuse probably caused his early demise at age 47], did they REALLY have to take it a step further and depict him as bench pressing 700-lb? ::)
But hey - I guess we live in a society where everyone is contributing to these delusional media images.

You're right to suggest that there is no way to correlate with complete accuracy/specificity. I have found that the one-rep max calculators have been pretty accurate for me...but I do understand that they are imperfect tools, and that we can't know for certain that they are accurate in their projected calculations.
That being said...I would have to seriously consider the possibility of someone who bench presses over 600-lb with relative ease as being a person who potentially could have been very high up there at the world level for the bench press had he specifically attempted to be.
Whether or not that would translate to being THE world record holder...that much I don't know. But it sounds to me based on your stories and those of others, about Animal, that he was way up there anyway.
I don't know what the top 100 raw bench presses were around 1990. I think Bill Kazmaier bench pressed around 636-lb in a powerlifting meet, and he was a multiple World's Strongest Man winner. So I'd be curious where Animal ranked as it was, globally at the time. If he was, say, #76 or something for bench press as it was...could he have gone to #7 if he had trained specifically to do so?
I guess we will never know since, as you said, the tools to project these things are not perfect. So we can only speculate. I just thought, since you trained with Animal, you may have been more confident one way or another about his potential in bench press.

potentially a man that big could bench that much. but there again there is a inverse proportion to size and power. little fellers (no offence) can move multiples of their bodyweight on the powerlifts. the ratio decreases as the bodyweight increases. thats why top lifter awards are based on percentages , not totals.
could Big John bench 700? conceivably. did he do it in that video? absolutely not.

worked out near Ted, but never with him. didn't find him to be very sociable.
it was Steve Disalvo. and this was at a time when both Bill Kazmeier ( who was friends with Steve way before they got strong at the university of wisconsin) and Ted Arcidi were living in Calgary too.
he benched 6 plates for 5 reps strict in a t-shirt with multiple witnesses, including BJ Annis who owned the gym and was a stickler for honesty in lifts.
probably wasn't two other humans on the planet that could do that at the time.
-

on a straight ratio, no. but 100 pound increase to a 500 bench is magnitudes more difficult than going from a 200 bench to 300; even though the percentage increase is much smaller.

no, i'm way too frail, lol.
back was already compromised seriously by the time i was 20.
i knew many wrestlers, living in Stu Hart's town. my old roomate was a wrestler, fought warlord.
always liked it, but wasn't built to take the bumps.

Was Warlord a strong guy? He always looked massive and juiced to the gills

One of those statements you have to read a second, if not a third time, just to make sure you read it correctly.
That's a strong MFer.

yup.
my roomate at the time was 5'11 255. he could incline 5 plates for a single and deadlift 8 plates aside with no wraps. he was wrestling locally when wwf came to town . they hired him as a jobber (loser) against mr. Perfect. they heard a rumor he was going to shoot and try to pin Perfect to make a name for himself.
so they put him in with Warlord to teach him a lesson. he looked like a child next to Warlord and got ragdolled really bad.
he never wrestled again.

i am a stickler for no exaggeration and am damn near eidetic when it comes to numbers.

By frail to you mean frail compared to pro wrestlers? Or do you mean frail by a normal person's standards? Looking at your contest pictures, I would have never guessed you were "compromised seriously" by age 20.
I do think wrestlers are genetic freaks for being able to sustain the damage they do and keep going. Mick Foley for example. I recall him saying himself that he was able to withstand more pain than most people. He took some serious falls. I recall one from the top of a cage into the ring, which doesn't have very much give, then another onto a table...and that may have been the same match. He was walking around like an 80-year-old before turning 40...but I think had I taken the bumps and falls he did, I may have been paralyzed completely. I think most of these guys are complete genetic freaks.
I was going to ask you if you had ever thought of becoming a pro wrestler too - "Mr. Vein". ;D

Hahaha that’s a great story. Thanks for sharing. Mr. Perfect was the man, and the Warlord still looks pretty good for his age.
