They where so good in the Roth era 1984 is a perfect albumen
-
I caught them on their last tour with DLR and Wolfgang.
Band was amazing, DLR just talked each song, but it was still fun to see. 6-string master, one of the GOATS talent wise.
(I didnt follow much after 1984 as I didnt like the direction they went in), though they made good music, my taste in the 80's/90's was (still is) death metal, very heavy metal.
But as a musician myself, how could one not love Eddie, innovator.
Early shit (VH I, II, Fair Warning, Women & Children, Diver Down) all fantastic.

Looked really bad in last pictures I saw of him. Pretty much knew when he went to that Tool concert with the son that the end was coming.
He's a musical giant - responsible for almost all the 80s guitar virtuosity. What else can you say? RIP
-
RIP.
Cancer sucks.
Smoking filthy cigarettes has consequences.
At the end of the day, he was no Prince. As in Prince the artist.
-
One of these days I’ll have to tell you about a Van Halen Halloween Party, me and a midget

Rock n' Roll!
RIP Rock n' Roller. ❤️

King Edward
The most important rock guitarist of all time.
His soloing ... otherworldly rhythm playing ... creativity ... sound/tone ... songwriting ... equipment innovation ... presentation/aesthetic ...
G.O.A.T.
There’s before Eddie and there is after Eddie.
In 1978 Ed erupted from his human form and tapped into a never-before-known plane of alien sounds through six-string virtuosity and inspiration.
Edward was The One.

This one was always my favorite and seemed like such an underrated song.

Wait that’s not big Lou holding up the globe is it?
-
I wouldn't feel bad. I'm sure he's done more in his life than 100 lifetimes of the average person. If anyone asked me last week if he was alive I would have just guessed not knowing.
-
I just found out, very sad about this :(
-
The best ever. R.I.P.
-
i was supposed to see them at hershey park pa but david lee roth got sick [probably too much chocolate] and they had to cancel last minute.

Great post.
Looking at it from a standpoint of talent, creativity, innovation , and body of work, you have to put him at the very top.

The guy smoked those filthy Marlboro red cowboy killer cigarettes for most of his life. Then when he was diagnosed with tongue cancer, he blamed it on putting metal picks in his mouth while playing his guitar. Then the tongue cancer went into remission and the rumor has it that he started smoking again. Just couldn't give up those cigs.

RIP Eddie. Never could get too much into Van Halen because of the super annoying twat David Lee Roth but they had a few songs I liked. Eddie was a great guitarist.

True but I was huge VH fan especially since they were from the area where I grew up at. Used to go to their back yard parties when they were the best local band then right after they came out with their first album

My fellow countryman Eddie Van Halen died at 65 after a long struggle against cancer.
Now this is a true story: some 30+ years ago I dated Eddie's niece for a while. The relation didn't go that well, but her great-grandmother (Eddie and Alex's grandmother) was about to have her birthday. The Van Halen brothers were to come over here in Holland for that event.
I just wanted to keep the relation with her (Sandra) going until the celebration, for I had the chance to meet my then-time guitar hero. Not really a very girl-friendly reason, I know....I was young and wild...
Unfortunately we broke up a few weeks before that. Never met Eddie and Alex.
Too bad...say Dr Dutch.
And Ed, may you jam in Heaven forever with Hendrix and Stevie Jay and Johnny Winter and all them guitar heroes.
Rock and Roll forever.
-
Welcome to yesterday and 100's of replies Good Dr.!

What a co-incidence! :o I never met Eddie Van Halen either!

When someone dies it's always about the people left behind. The dead one is gone dude....
Why the hate ? It's still the same over here, too bad.

Cool.

Sorry Stevie Ray. Vaughan.

In the end Sammy was way better, though DLR was better at his top, which wasn't very long. And Sammy was a much nicer guy.

This is one of the better EVH inspired solos:
Starts at 3:15:

Yeah brings back memories. I remember how satisfied I was that I finally was able to play the "running with the devil" guitar riff....which wasn't that difficult after all, of course.

You're right, I agree. After '83 the Van Halen brothers wanted to go into another direction, musically. More emphasis on a keyboard sound but Roth disagreed. Roth wanted to keep their sound more heavy and bluesy with heavy drums and guitar riffs. Roth also felt that Eddie would be overextending himself during live performances jumping from guitar to keyboards and back to singing background vocals and that their sound would suffer as a result. After the 1984 album and the huge U.S. tour afterwards, it was over with Roth. Roth Van Halen much better than Van Hager, I think.
-
Well, they had Hager and Roth together for a short while. That did not end well. ;D

great observation and very accurate, its really astonashing, how roth van halen , and vanhagar and two totally different sounds bands. roth just brought more out of the group musically., its like plant with out jones, bonham, and page. just some people make way better music together
-
You can draw a comparison to Journey. Most people believe the band was better musically with Greg Rollie on Keys but they had much more commercial success with Cain. The early 80s was a time for 70s bands to cash in.
-
Now, if I had to pick the song that represents the Roth era at its absolute peak,I’ll go with this. In 1981 there was no doubt that this was the greatest front duo in the world:

Wow,this fucking truly sucks.

Great example they where on point gotta love Roth’s flying splits at the beginning if Hagar tried that
He would have had to go in for surgery to reattach his balls

That's because Hagar has balls.

Sammy - Better singer, musician.
DLR - Better showman, entertainer.
-
fuk off
I like your style.

Man,that blows big time! :'(
Eddie was always my man, when it comes to guitar playing. The coolest and the most melodic player with lightning fast execution of scales and licks. Also had a great talent for writing hits, like Jump or Dance the night away. Very versatile not just metal. His rhythm playing is what is the most underrated.
Van Halen was such a big part of my life as a teenager and is still my favorite all time band.
R.I.P. Eddie!
-
doa is a rocker...somebody get me a doctor great riffs,
I agree! The second album was just as good as the first, if not heavier and better. His rhythm playing on those riffs is so raw and balls out! It is the "brown sound"!

This, Thank you Fortress for expressing it for me so eloquently. I cant express the sadness that I felt when I heard the news. I will never forget when I heard Eruption/ You really got me for the first time while driving in my car in South Philly.

No doubt better with Rollie he had a great voice too. He and Perry sounded great together.

Dirty Movies is a great song that doesn't get enough credit!

I saw balance tour they played well but tensions were bad between Sam and Ed and Eddie had bad hip the show I saw barely moved but played his ass off.I’d say 86 through 93 tours you see them having so much fun together and playing to huge crowds and Eddie seemed on better end of a long life of drinking, drugs,,,smoking

I saw them on the first tour with Hagar. Ironically in the New Jersey Meadowlands. The show sucked. Sammy talked way too much between songs. I guess he was trying to be Dave. The concert had no continuity.

Best show I saw there was Clapton. He had his A game that night.

Was at the 1988 Monsters of Rock show at Giants Stadium with VH, Scorpions, Metallica, Dokken. Epic!
-
Saw Van Halen at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas in the late 70s.100 plus degrees in July.I remember they sprayed a fire hose on the crowd to cool off.
-
I always thought his wife Valerie Bertinelli was cute as hell.
-
Was at the 1988 Monsters of Rock show at Giants Stadium with VH, Scorpions, Metallica, Dokken. Epic!
Scorps & Metallica owned that show
I personally went just to see George & Eddy
Eddy was a smooth player and George was more of a radical guitarist
Don Dokken begged management to go onstage before Metallica instead of after

5150 tour ??that was a monster tour i thought sam and ed had great onstage chemistry when things were good.sam is a talker and dave is a talker but more of a bullshitter type for fans reaction as oppossed of sammy being genuine..i was watching a 1984 show other night from canada and dave was like this is the best crowd on tour i wish we could take you all with us...ironicaly during encore dave came out with a canadians jersey he got water thrown on him 'he said you know what thats cool but im gonna being fuking your girlfriend after the show'lol....
