The old Mid City gym. I worked out there a couple of times. It really was a bit of a dump but it was hard core. I was there when a photographer was taking pictures of the gym. A girl working out there that I recognized from the magazines said to the photographer, " I do nudes too with a smile." One time Tom who owned it had a new policy after bodybuilding took off. No one was allowed to visit the gym walking around the gym floor. I think it got too much traffic from the gays and tourists.
Another hardcore gym in the area was Atlas in Jersey city, NJ across the river from Manhattan. It was a second floor walk up on top of a little store. The floor had holes in it from dropped deadlifts. If you didn't know where the holes were under the rug you could twist an ankle. The manager who was not the owner seemed to be a guy down on his luck. He lived in the gym. He had a hot plate, tv and a couch to sleep on. He was friendly guy.
People who train in modern gyms would be shocked how gyms were back in the day. I still think hard core dumps are the best gyms but I do like trying the equipment in modern gyms. Just in my town are two gyms. One looks like a million bucks. Beautiful flooring with new equipment. Maybe 20 treadmills and all the other cardio equipment. A little boxing room and an indoor swimming pool. Women have their hair done, make up and wear those panty hose leggings that's just as good as being naked. Expensive cars are in the parking lot and the beautiful tan people come out of them.
The other gym is the one that I belong to. It's a hard core place. All the machines are over 30 years old. Chalk flies by the powerlifters and the floor gets white. Hard core trainers mix with the old people who go there to socialize. Maybe the biggest muscular guy I have ever seen workout there. He looks about 350 and is muscular. He couldn't win anything because he is a cross between a strong man contestant and bodybuilder. Very impressive but he doesn't squat or deadlift. He does move impressive weights in other exercises. He mainly works out by himself and has a soft voice that seems weird coming out of this gorilla. He told me he's just a naturally huge guy and he doesn't use anything. He said he as a training partner who he works out with when his partner is juicing. He said off the juice he can't keep up. Very few young women work out there. They normally come in to check the place out and leave with a disgusted look on their face. I'm sure they ended up in the above paragraph gym. One thing for sure is a 45lbs plate is a 45lbs plate no matter where you go. Yates and Coleman were the result of working out in a place like the one I'm describing.
On a side note the picture of Harold Poole in Mid city used to live in Union city, NJ. The same place Weider used to have his headquarters prior to moving to California. Rumor was at the time Poole worked for the mob as an intimidator. Someone correct me if that was false. He lived above a bar that was notorious for mob activity.

Your post seems to suggest that bodybuilding is a semi-real sport, and I would disagree with that. No matter how dedicated and disciplined pro bodybuilders are, I just can't call it a sport in any way, shape or form.
As for the most gifted teenage genetics, a Getbigger posted this shot, so the Jesse Eisenberg lookalike on the far-left [fitting] may be the winner of this prestigious title. Apparently this group was some sort of UK version of the New Kids on the Block. As for the guy on the far-right...that's not Lee Priest:

Why on earth do you & the likes of you frequent & post on a bodybuilding board when you clearly
Dislike what bodybuilding “Sport” is. Why not find a board on a subject you like & Enjoy.
You’d be happier & we would. So Much Negativity.

Well, BB is not exactly a sport, it's more like a COD. So most people with shitty genetics, who still look like shit after many years of "living the lifestyle" (lol) become more and more bitter and negative as they put a lot into it and still get ridiculed or not taken serious by the general public, as they don't even look much better than the averege Joe. Still because of their COD they can't let it go and have to stick around BB-boards and topics etc. and let their inner bitterness and negativity break loose. Pretty sad actually, but it is what it is :)

I took these pics back in 1999 of my 17 year old training partner. He had only done a very small amount steroids at this point, which I injected him with. I think with a substantial cycle he could've been pro level within a few months. But he lost interest in the whole bb thing soon after.

Any pics of Franco Santoriello? The Cybergenics poster boy. He looked amazing as a teen

Some of these comments are disgraceful.
Bodybuilding is not just a sport but the greatest sport in the universe

Lol I don’t even consider it a sport, funny when other bbers refer to other bbers as “athletes”
Illumanati is mad he isn’t an “athlete” of any sort, and what he spends his free time in is just a hobby/pageant contest...... never said there was anything wrong with that
I don’t find it to be negative to point out that bbing isn’t a real sport, doesn’t mean I don’t follow working out, being active and living a healthy lifestyle

looked impressive especially for his age, but hard to do damage at the pro level with lats that high

The lats look extra high there but it wasn't that bad, no one remarked on it back then. His legs were a bit weaker than the upper. Not saying he would have been a top pro but could've got to that level quickly.
What does he look like today?
No juice, no training :D

You take a lot of semi-naked pics of this cat.
Kinda ghay.

Any pics of Franco Santoriello? The Cybergenics poster boy. He looked amazing as a teen
I met Franco when he was a rising “thing” in bodybuilding. At his best.
Not too tall ... and he was very angry and pissy. His face had a constant expression like he just learned his car was stolen and he smelled a rancid fart at the same time.
He was the classic Angry Little Man.
Good physique, though, even if he is a manlet.
-

I wish I took more. I was his coach, and taught him everything, what little I knew, about training since he was 15 years old. I took maybe 4 or 5 pics with his analog camera because he asked me to, these were scanned later by him. So he has these shitty 5 pics of a period of in his life, 2-3 years of hardcore bodybuilding, which he still cherishes despite abandoning it soon after. Now he can tell stories as an "old" man of his glory days to little kids getting into the gym culture but has hardly any evidence to back it up. No proof of his very good gym lifts either. It's just probable bullshit to the kids, the kind of baloney every old guy tells :D
I competed too at this time. Can you believe I have zero pics, either on stage or gym? :'( I hated getting my picture taken in general but I regret it now. A friend took some pics of me posing at the gym when I was in shape but when he got them developed the camera had malfunctioned so all I have is 2 out of focus pics lol. Pathetic :'( :D
I hate this current excessive picture taking and Instagram whoring and narcissism but a moderate amount of pics is nice to have.
A little rant regarding pics :D
Do you take a lot of pics Fortress? You don't seem like a picture whore either :D

The workout supplied was pretty good though, made a lot of regular folks bust their ass compared to what was a general fitness workout back then.

17? That's insane! Sucks when things come easy and they don't give crap. How tall was he?
That’s the mindset with some, my friend Kevin was the same way, turned pro in physique, could have gone far too, had a great look, 6 ft tall, good looks, everything came easy, and just quit and never looked back

17? That's insane! Sucks when things come easy and they don't give crap. How tall was he?
He was only 5'4". I measured his arms when he was fluffy and with a pump at almost 18 inches which is nuts. Yeah I know everyone supposedly has 20 inch arms ::) :D
It suck when those with wonderful genes don't give a crap. I would have done anything to have had the genes for top level bodybuilding.
I have another friend whose arms I measured at a legit 21 when he was barely out of his teens. Now we are both over 40 and his biceps are literally like 3 of mine. It's more like his arms are as big as my quads. Genetics are a bitch :'( :D

Don’t give much of a shit about pictures.

No, the workout was not pretty good. It was a whole burnout to failure forced negatives nonsense routine specifically designed to not be completed so that they could always claim it was your failure to do their "tough workout" that was the problem and not that they were fraudsters
-
I only did the Cybergenics Phase 1 kit. I think you were supposed to increase your food drastically for 2 weeks even before you started the specific program and supps :D
-

per his interview with Dave Palumbo he was injecting drugs from ~ the age of 13 or 13 (almost the same time he started training)

Nope not angry or mad in the slightest
Just can’t figure why all the verbal negativity
Personally I can’t stand Football, Horse racing, Marathon running & many other “Sports or Pastimes”
The last thing I’d think of doing or want to do is post on those boards constantly about how bad the “Sport”
Is how much drugs they may take & Generally be Negative 👎🏻 I’d thoroughly expect the other board members to Tell Me To Fuck Off.
And they’d be Right to.
Still you carry on being Bitter & Negative 🙄 👍🏻

I met Franco when he was a rising “thing” in bodybuilding. At his best.
Not too tall ... and he was very angry and pissy. His face had a constant expression like he just learned his car was stolen and he smelled a rancid fart at the same time.
He was the classic Angry Little Man.
Good physique, though, even if he is a manlet.

Yeah, he just seemed hacked off, even while being friendly with people.
But like I say, he had a really cool physique.

Quite the opposite, you are the one upset for me saying that bbing isn’t a real sport, I don’t see where I was being negative or bitter
You can be into bbing and working out without following competitive bbing

But, was he sexual?

I have zero concerns about what you think BBing is.
Very true you can into training & BB without any interest in competitive BB
You could also not be so Bitter / Angry/ Negative/ upset about what you believe BB do & do not take.
Concentrate on your own Training & Leave what you don’t like out of it.
Makes you sound / come across very Bitter & Twisted.

Lots of young bodybuilders got pro tickets early on. Genetics show themselves early in the game.

Yes the italians are small people with even smaller brains. No personalities and awful English. You know you’ve got a country full of retards when they’re in Europe and not an ounce of English between the lot of them.
Ruder than the French

I think it's like that in most sports. Some just have it, most do not. It's just that in bbing it more obvious as it's right before your eyes.

The Irish are the bottom of the barrel. European "n" words.
