Title: Brian Shaw Classic (DEC 12)
Post by: Body-Buildah on November 30, 2020, 01:52:44 PM
Shaw may have an edge (His equipment, his home gym (day 1) his mountain-home gym (day 2), the elevation (being accustomed), etc.

If he doesn't win his own contest, will  he hang it up? (5th at WSM this year).
If he does win, he wont accept the prize money, it will go to the others.

Would love to see Big Z. equal/beat his old record.

I predict current WSM Novikov to win, he's great at most of these events:

These are the events for the Shaw Classic:

Day 1

Max Log Press
Super Yoke (approx. 500kg)
Farmer’s Medley (two sets of farmer carry, one set of frame carry)

Day 2

Max Hummer Tire Deadlift
Circus Dumbbell (approx. 250lb for reps)
Atlas Stone Run (approx. 200-210kg)

In addition to announcing the events, Shaw also revealed who the referees will be:

2004 America’s Strongest Man Van Hatfield
2013 Master’s America’s Strongest Man Chad Coy
Both men have been in the sport of strongman for a long time, and Shaw expressed his confidence that they would be able to make the tough calls that referees are often challenged to make during competition.

The epic line-up of strongman that will compete in the inaugural Shaw Classic includes:

4-time WSM Zydrunas Savickas - (current log lift world record holder).
2019 WSM runner-up Mateusz Kieliszkowski - (Now injured/out).
2019 Arnold Australia champion Rob Kearney - (Now injured/out).
2020 Britain’s Strongest Man Adam Bishop
Former American log lift record holder Robert Oberst - (Strong and Pretty Weak and Ugly).
2-time WSM bronze medalist Terry Hollands
2017 America’s Strongest Man Jerry Pritchett
9-time Canada’s Strongest Man JF Caron
2020 Arnold Strongman USA bronze medalist Maxime Boudreault

Shaw's looking like a over-sized newborn these days.

 ;D

I never really thought of it that way, but that's exactly what he looks like.

Must be all the Anadrol. Got that pumpkin head going on.

Shaw's a nice guy, just a bit boring. I like watching the video's of Eddie Hall and Robert Oberst.

They should show them all eating together.  Should be a fun, semi-serious event.

Shaw seems like a decent enough guy, but I remember years back on Sugden Barbell Forum though, he would whine about Big Z, call him a horrible person, etc, just because Big Z called out Shaw for either faking an injury or similar. (And skipping a contest). (He said it tongue-in-cheek like "maybe Brians faking 'cause he doesn't wanna face me again" type of thing).

He does a lot of the "Tom Brady" like complaining at contests he's in, with the body-language stuff they complain abut Brady doing. (Shrugging, hand gestures, complaining abut the equipment, etc).
Shaw has to play a good guy these days, its his job/livelihood, and he's doing very well these days. Two new, huge houses in the last year alone.

I like Shaw, one of the best of his time, but he's no Big Z, no ones record, longevity, etc can (or will) compare to the GOAT.  ;)

4x WSM, 8x ASC among tons of others wins. (SCL, Giants Live, IFSA, etc).  (Powerlifting as well).

Big Z is the greatest without question.

Shaw comes across like a really nice guy but he is at the end of his time being competitive with the top guys, his body language tells us he's not dealing with it all that well. Hopefully he can control that and maintain his status as a positive role model in the business when he retires.

There are some eating challenges on Youtube with Shaw, Oberst and Hall. They are pretty funny. Shaw can eat a ton of food.

Hall did a video last year i think of him eating his WSM meal plan. It's insane how much he eats in a day. He sleeps a lot too. He's got an amazing wife that cooks him some great stuff.

Shaw married Keri Jenkins (Strongman Mike Jenkins' wife) after he passed away.
Nick Best married Callie Marunde (Strongman Jesse Marundes' wife) after he passed away.
They have a thing for large ugly guys I guess.

Yeah i found that pretty odd, but i bet the women are obsessed with large men.

I'd be interested to see how Shaw ages, a lot of strongmen have not aged well.

Shaw started releasing some YT vids of the pre-contest stuff. Number selections, interviews, etc.

Day one will be available tomorrow at @ 2 PM on his pay site, day 2 will be SUN at 2 PM on his pay site.

Final contestants (order of the athletes doing the events). (I guess it will change as points build, least points will go first, etc).
You always want to go last in Strongman.

1. Adam Bishop
2. Aleksii Novikov
3. Brian Shaw
4. Kevin Faires
5. Luke Stoltman
6. Trey Mitchell
7. Terry Hollands
8. Jerry Pritchett
9. Maxime Boudret
10. JF Caron

Shaw is giving 25K of his own money, and 10K more was just added w/ PPV buys. (It will probably go up a bit more).

He has a good production team and will have a delay, so a quality show can be edited/uploaded and not just streaming from a phone in the corner.
Wants top make it a yearly show on the circuit.

A good job on the show/production. Cut out all the filler, just one hour of all the lifts/events.

After day 1:

Luke won the Log (Event 1), Pritchett smoked everyone in the Farmers Medley, Frame Carry (event 3). Lots did well in the 2nd event - Yoke.

Fixed.  Maxime is from my neck of the woods [he lives a few blocks away from me, in fact], and I'm extremely proud of the guy.  I worry that he pushes himself too much, which is a general worry I have for all competitors at his level.

Did Oleksii Novikov say that he thought Maxime might win?  It sort of cut him off, but it sounded like he said that.  If so - wow!  Huge compliment coming from the World's Strongest Man winner himself.  :)

Maxime is looking great, beat many of the larger guys on the log press, he did 440 I think, came in 2nd or 3rd on that.

All these strongman dudes die fairly young.  Shaw will be no exception.

Yes!  His log press is amazing.  I should go grab a video of him from either the 2013 or 2014 Ontario's Strongest Man contest where he pressed 360-lb, and dropped it behind him, and a bunch of women in the audience jumped.  Meanwhile, no man even reacted.  It was such a clear example of gender differences, IMO.  A raw, visceral way that proves men evolved to handle stimuli that women can't.

Maxime's pressing is amazing, and still improving.  I haven't checked the events for this contest, so I can't speak on how Maxime will do, but if there are a few events favouring him, he can do well.

Sad post, but very true.  I remember Brian Shaw posted a video with his little son, and he said something like "I look forward to him understanding my achievements in strongman.  I want to make him proud."

That video was from maybe two years ago, and his son was probably only around one or two at the time.  When I watched it, I was thinking...does Shaw think he'll be alive to see his son's 20th birthday?  I don't mean to insult him or anything, but does he not have the self-awareness to understand that competing over 400-lb [I think 450-lb at the 2016 Arnold] is not conducive to a long lifespan?

Only the beta fan boys will.

Guilty as charged.  :P

I love the sports of Strongman, Powerlifting (not so much bodybuilding), etc. So 8.99 for 2-days of Top Strongman is fun. (For me).
Wouldnt pay a nickel to see a BB show, where others pay 40.00 PPV for it (Mr. O). Each his own I guess.

Once on his site there's 16 weeks of programming (exact workouts, with event training added in) that he does, so its an interesting download there as well.
Ill be canceling tomorrow though (cancel at any time).

I normally pay for the 'Giants Live', 'World Ultimate Strongman' etc. Si ya, bit of a geek. :P

$8.99 isn't bad.

You are absolved from beta-ness.

I can take the insults sir, I'm used to it around these here parts!!  :D

All in all, a great show/event. Shaw ended up winning, prize money went up to 50K due to "views/buys". Shaw will not accept the 15K for 1st place, he will redistribute it back to the others.
He schooled everyone on the static/classic events like Circus bell, Stones, 3rd in DL I believe (Pritchett and JF Caron broke the world record in Hummer-Tire DL, and Caron went on to set a new one after that). JF peaking in his 40's, but I fear for his health. Woolly Mammoth.

Pritchett smoked the 900 lb. Frame carry like he was bringing in the groceries. He did poorly in Circus-bell, Im sure he'll work on that, he seems to bring  up weaknesses each year after moving over from Powerlifting.

Seems classy all around. I saw elsewhere someone commenting on the fact that Brian was wearing a grip shirt but none of the others were. I thought this was a bit off, but watching Luke Stoltman's video on YouTube Brian provided a bag for all the guys with grip shirts, shrip shorts, lifting straps and a few other things.

Nice to see Maxime in the thumbnail here - the beast from parts unknown [actually - the new feller on the world stage from my neck of the woods].  From of him...he still has time to get better, and he's one of the most committed athletes I've personally met [if not the most committed]:
