Title: Blood test in morning : advice on what extras to look for
Post by: irishdave on December 01, 2020, 02:43:49 PM
Hello American Patriots,
I’ve a blood test in the morning. It’s been a few years. Going to ask for sodium levels, test and gh to be checked. Any of you “doctors of the dark side” have any advice on what else to look at?

Also, is fasting really necessary...i suppose it gives a more accurate reading?

I need to start doing this every 6 months ideally?

Thanks Lads

Fasting is necessary if the blood test includes lipids (cholesterol).

Tell them to check for HIV you Trump sucking potato dog.   ;D

Hematocrit, Hemoglobin, are good to know.  You should be at 48 or under.   If not, tell your doctor to give you a script so you can give blood every 4 weeks to bring it down.  Or maybe you don't have to have your doc do that over there.

Cholestrol is useful to know, however nowdays it seems all the sport doc are not placing as much emphasis on the #'s as much as they are the particle size.  Again, not sure how it is over there, but could be different.  It is helpful to know both.  HDL and LDL are going to mostly be genetic for the large part, but still within possible change if you apply yourself.

Your PSA is important to know.  As long as you are not taking any masking agents like saw palmetto, or statins or cialis.

Fasting is useful for getting your numbers down prior to the test.  However, you don't walk around all day in a fasted state.  My doc prefers I have my labs done after 2pm.  It gives a more accurate reading to what a usual day may be instead of one that had prep prior to it.

Ideally, you will not have trained in 72 hours prior to the test.  As stressful training can have some readings elevated.

Typing too fast so there will be some mistakes above.  sorry.

Thank you that’s very helpful indeed. I think cholesterol is a default one but I’ll make sure they look at it also. Forgot that one.

I definitely won’t be training before it it’s at 8am and i never train on empty

I had the opportunity to do it last month a free clinic right beside my house but I never bothered. I’m going to start doing it. I feel fine though but it’s supposedly good for your BP, correct?

While your test, free test, trigs, LH, FSH, estrogen and estradiol are important to know, I don't think what you will show at this point after your cycle are your true values.  Rather it is like a snapshot for this moment in time.  Unless you are trying to purposely show low testosterone so you can score a legit HRT script for it, stay clean and check in six months for a more accurate reading.

Fasting is necessary if the blood test includes lipids (cholesterol).

I had a blood test about a few months ago that included cholesterol and there was no fasting required (results said it was a non-fasting lipid panel)

No I just was told to get one done and I’m adding my own checks in. Doesn’t matter about the levels it’s not for a job interview

So what is the purpose of the test? I didn't see it mentioned.

Your blood composition changes by the hour

You would need a fasted test
And a test after a few meals in

That will give you a good ballpark estimate

Especially important for sugar levels.

Good post above lurker re tests

Get Hdl LDL cholesterol
Hct very important at your age..
Also Get LH FSH if your off the gear these will tell you if you have made any type of recovery...

Also get a blood panel done, your dr will most likely do this anyway.

Hmm. Never had one of those and I have been doing labs twice a year for as long as I can remember. To be honest, to use the term fasting is a bit of an overstatement since I've only been advised not to have anything to eat around 8 hours before the test. Skipping a scoop of ice cream late at night is hardly fasting.

LH FSH - I’ll have to get that next time. Good to know, cheers

All good info here ^^

Lipids, Hematocrit (complete CBC), AST/ALT (liver), PSA. Just ask for it all.
They recommend fasting, some newer places dont these days, they want to see what you walk around as.

Thanks for the link. It makes sense to have a non-fasting triglycerides test since most people eat through the day and evening so their levels are bound to be higher most of the time. My primary care physician orders these tests once a year, usually in August in conjunction with my annual wellness exam. I ask him about doing a non fasting test next year. I suppose it's possible he'll want to see both fasting and non fasting for comparison.
