He also was probably the national pie eating champion, hot dog eating champion, national pumpkin growing champion, most cows milked in 24 hours champion, etc. You get the picture.

Partly right. Very disappointing turn out for all competitions. First time any national bodybuilding contests were held in Western Canada. Most were held in Montreal or Toronto. One guy showed up from eastern Canada.
Everyone got lucky that day. We also had a Mr Pacific Northwest for BC, Alaska and Washington State. One from Alaska showed up so that contest didn't mean much.
The arm wrestling was interesting. Yes, no one showed up from out of BC. There were probably guys in the audience who might have won. Well, few strong guys enter contests to test their strength.
I used to joke with Jimmy that now that he was the national champion lumberjacks would be challenging him. Two weeks before the contest I weighed 20 pounds more...about 210. I had no trouble beating Jimmy then.
We worked out in the same gym. He was the manager some of the time. In the event on the day you can look at the photo. What happened was that he got a leg outside the table and had extra leverage.
Someone yelled out about it from the audience but the judge did nothing. Well, I was glad that big James Forsythe won. Good bloke. Sadly he passed away a couple of years ago.
