Title: What causes that ugly split in between the abs that f*ed up so many midsections?
Post by: affeman on December 31, 2020, 08:42:03 AM
Many older BB seem to get that ugly split in between their abs. Also, the inner part of the midsection seems to get kind of "washed out" and shows no signs of details or separation anymore. What causes that phenomenon? Seems irreversible too (at least I haven't seen one case a once f*ed up midsection has ever gone back to looking decent again) ???

Genetic predispositions.

I think it's like Diastasis Recti that pregnant women get.
I have it myself from all the heavy lifting, looks terrible.

Yes, possibly from being repeatedly overweight with an expanded gut.

something that should not be overlooked is the leg press.  big deep breath at the top, then letting the knees/thighs drag against the abdomen on the way down.
pay attention next time you do them.   be aware of any pressure 'pulling' the abs apart as the thighs drop

The function of the linea alba is to maintain the abdominal muscles at a certain proximity to each other. In the case of long-lasting increased intra-abdominal pressure, the linea alba widens.

Possibly adds up over time, the repeated gaining massive weight gain and stretching gut and then shrinking down again.

Yes from abdominal pressure. Connective tissue stretching out.
In these bodybuilders cases it's IMO because of insulin abuse causing distension in combination with heavy lifting putting on alot of abdominal pressure. You see the classic bodybuilders do not use insulin and that's why they have no distension, and usually not this split... But it's also genetic and can happen anyway....

That photo on the right is much older than the one on the left I believe.  When Lee had the blonde hair he looked his best.  (IMO)

No one mentioning GH causing swelling of all internal tissues?  I thought that was the generally accepted understanding of the cause of Palumboism.

Palumboism wasn't splitting of the abs specifically. It was also shrinking arms etc. Most probably feel Pamboism has to do with age and especially with insulin resistance, with the body rebeling on multiple fronts.

Tearing of the abs and/or widening of the linea alba takes a lot of pressure - like in extreme volumes of food combined with heavy lifting. Many pregnant women recover their former waistline pretty well whereas some don't, they get diastasis recti. A few get surgery, a tummy tuck or hernia surgery. Genetics plays a part like with everything.

GH by itself doesn't tear your abs but it doesn't help combined with the food and lifting. But even steroids can expand your waistline temporarily through a few mechanisms. Anyone who has juiced extensively knows what I'm talking about, especially with orals. Insulin and GH can cause insulin resistance and increased VAT. And so on.

GH is an amazing hormone but if megadosed I think it can backfire terribly as far as health goes. I can think of many examples. High dosed GH can be amazing for a short while, long term, no.

The body just looks shittier as you get older.  Fascia stretching, tendons and muscles stretching (at the sternum), abs pulling apart, quads separating from the knee, etc, etc.

Yea, it even happens in 'natural' bodybuilders...

Not everyone - with a little judicious juicing and a tight diet, some manage to keep their world class physiques for decades...

I guess the muscles also store less water.
Part of the declining muscle may also be attributed to nerve compression in the cervical spine which most people, including normies, seem to totally ignore.
