Kinda amazing to see Cosmo Magazine saying that being overweight is healthy. I am pretty sure that almost every doctor or nurse out there would say that this is an incredible misstatement.
What is going on in the minds of the editors of Cosmo? Are they really serious?

A few years ago I was reading an article in Men's fitness about the worlds fittest man. It was a guy that competed in Triathlons or iron man contests, not sure which.. but had a Dad Body... The point was you could be in fantastic shape and not look like a fitness model. But I agree the ones in your post don't seem all that healthy.

I am currently 30-lb overweight according to the BMI, and you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who says 30-lb overweight isn't fat. It's morning now, so I'm probably 5'9.3" [since I haven't technically gotten out of bed yet]. And if you check that height with the BMI, I am probably 30-lb overweight [195-lb to 200-lb].
In reality, I have a bit of a stomach now, but it would be model-sleek within two months IF I HAD ACCESS TO A PROPER GYM/FACILITY.

Fair enough...but if I'm to properly train for upcoming 175-lb Strongest Manlet contests, I need a gym that goes up to 120-lb dumbbells...I mean...I can be healthy without a gym, but I want to strongman athlete trained.
Do you have any thread anywhere here or elsewhere online where you have explained your home gym workout?

Well...let's see...considering the fact that I live in the biggest province in Canada, where 40% of the population of my country lives, and given the fact that I won my weight class in the 175-lb class in 2017, I think it's safe to say, I can call myself a strongman. The qualifier to add is that I am a weight class strongman.
But what was I supposed to do - amend my post so that it read that I wanted to train for "for weight class strongman events"? ::)
I WANT TO TRAIN FOR STRONGMAN EVENTS - meaning Tire Flip, Farmer's Walk, Yoke Carry, Circus Dumbbell, Viking Press, etc.

What if I told you that not everyone wants to be a 250+lb fat fuck who can barely walk up a flight of stairs without huffing or puffing? I, as a matter of personal health, do not want to weigh over 175-lb - END OF.
That means, I won't bring up my body weight just for the sake of bringing it up, while making myself more and more unhealthy. I exercise for many reasons, one of them being HEALTH. And at my age [39], health is THE most important thing.
Your comment reminds me of IFBB pro bodybuilders who make fun at Men's Physique competitors, not grasping that most women look at them as veiny piles of mass, and are physically attracted to the Men's Physique guys.
I don't care what anyone else does, but I'm not interested in increasing my body weight. In 2016, Canada got a weight class for strongman, and by 2017, I won provincials and qualified for nationals on my first attempt.
So ONCE AGAIN, for the slow:

Just buy what you need, Matt. It's a justified expense if you're a competitor, especially if you're a winning competitor. I own plenty and don't compete in anything.
I can see guys preferring the ritual of attending the gym or getting a psychological boost from the atmosphere but it's really nice just walking into the other room instead of having to get in the car. Squat in your underwear, listen to your own tunes, never have your circuit interrupted or have to wait for something, belch, fart, try weird shit with gear you wouldn't find in a commercial setting, shamelessly indulge mirror 'mirin. It's great.

I've built a fully functional crossfit style (I don't do crossfit) home gym over the years, but it's not necessary.
Soulcrusher has it down pat - move for an hour+ outside, carry/drag/throw some heavy shit around while doing it, get in incredible shape.

It is nice. Really nice. But I bought all my gear in the wrong order. If I could do it again, my first stop would be the hardware store. A bar and whatever is needed to put it at your chinning height. Room above it for muscleups. 2" nylon webbing. Train legs one at a time.
If you already have a tree branch, the ground, and gravity: $10 worth of 2" webbing will get you in better shape, functionally and aesthetically, than any expensive setup that eats up your floor space.
Its not good enough for guys with specific needs like strongman, PL, or oly competition, but for me it probably would have been of more benefit than weights. If I had to do it all again, knowing what I know now, not sure I'd even get around to buying weights. For squats and deads maybe but my time would have been better spent pursuing calisthenic fitness.

Thanks. These are all good things to consider before investing in a home gym.
This one would have to be built from the ground up literally because the footings for the one story garage are insufficient and would need to be beefed up before adding a second story. The garage ceiling joists are 2" X 10"s which isn't large enough to carry the weight and stress 22' long, specially not that of a well equipped gym, so 2" X 12" joists would need to be "sistered" with the current ones or they could totally replace them. The one good thing construction wise is that the garage is attached so a second staircase wouldn't be required. Another argument for doing this is that the space could be used for other things, like an art studio or a couple more bedrooms and another bath.
The real question is would I use a home gym enough to warrant spending probably something like $100 G's to build it and more to outfit it? My guess is that I wouldn't and I like going to different gyms to workout just to have a change of scene. Covid won't be a problem forever. It makes more sense to just wait it out until the restrictions are no longer needed.
Not long ago I purchased the X3 Elite system to use at home. It seems like a good option. Storage is negligible and the accompanying routines are quick and easy to master. Since I've not used bands in the past it's something new which helps keep things interesting.
At 76 years of age my goals are practical. I want to retain enough muscle to be able to get around on my own for as long as I am alive. Because I am pretty vain, I like being fit and lean, but not skinny.
My onetime goal of being this big muscular guy is fini. With the use of D-bol and testosterone, I got up to 225 lbs. for about a minute when I was in my late twenties. Reaching that goal felt good until it didn't. At 5'10" carrying around and maintaining that much body weight was very taxing. It is not surprising that so many bodybuilders expire so young.

I train a 24h facility and could go in at midnight or 2am and be at physical peak but it's hard in an empty room. Maybe I need to be a bit distracted by the other people or otherwise I start "thinking" too much? I don't need anyone looking at me or screaming at me but other people help in some way.

I'm in a basement too, and feel lucky to have a Bowflex ex2 , treadmill, DB's and step up block.
Gyms are open again in my area , but covid is also at record highs, so I'm staying in my basement home gym.
There is a small chance you get seriously ill from COVID, but at my age, why risk it for my wife and I.
The vaccine is here and we'll all be back in the gym by late spring/early summer.

Hahaa - I thought I was the only one who did that. We're having our rear garden remodelled this year, and I'm replacing the old outbuildings with a new brick-built garage and space for a modest home gym. So I've sketched different layouts so many times I've lost count. About the only things that have remained constant are a chinning station like Tapeworm mentioned above, and a really nice Smith machine (because I am a h0mo ;D)

There are metrics like resting HR, BP, lipids, etc. that define health - not how someone feels FFS! >:( Give them a brisk 5 on an inclined treadmill and see how beautiful they feel on the inside then (if they haven't passed out)
My Wife watches a programme called 'Fat Curvy Brides' (or something like that) - watching them burst into tears when they realise just how f**ked they look in the mirror never gets old!! But they are never so upset they choose lose some f**king weight though

Right on, Taffy. If you're UK metro, I imagine land is tight. Just by way of wrecking your budget and marriage, don't forget you can go up & down as well if a basement or attic space will let you branch out.
Whatever you choose to populate your build with, I'm convinced that Myspace and Mytime is key. Of course, I'm an only child who never had a lifelong relationship, and am a selfish bastard by nature. But if you're into bodyweight work, a padded floor would be a welcome addition. It'll open the door to positions you fail out of like planche, rolling planks, bodyweight strap flies, etc, as well as yoga-ish endeavours, tumbling, etc. Makes the ground something you can actually use and not worry about busting your nose on.

Funny you should say that, I did consider how important the floor was. There's plenty of those cheap interlocking tiles around, but it would be nice to have something as close to a single piece as
possible of the 12mm rubberised stuff on one side, then some of the harder stuff where I'd put a bench (or throw my dumbells down like Branch Warren LOL)
I'm lucky that my Wife is into training too, but she does more of the combat style cardio thing, so we might end up with some sort of dummy or bag - keep her away from my stuff ;D

I'm lucky that my Wife is into training too, but she does more of the combat style cardio thing, so we might end up with some sort of dummy or bag - keep her away from my stuff ;D
Fwiw I'm upgrading to ex-competition 40mm Fuji mats shortly (Fuck all use - covid). Apparently the techs from the well regarded Zebra mats are running it and the vinyl does stay affixed to the core and doesn't go sliding all around. You wouldn't lift on them but they'll do you for groundwork and even judo. Better than what I need but what the hell.
Roll out wresting mats are pretty big so have minimal joins but I can't say what they're like underfoot. They're way less dense than 2x1 tatami mats so possibly spongier but guys online seem to like them. I've read some reports of loosening surface. Hardly anyone loves their jigsaw foam but I could see price and no potential for loose surfacing as plusses. Toe hungry joints, difficulty cleaning, and poor feel are drawbacks.

As for the original point of this thread about 'healthy' whales - surely it's not open to interpretation and self-certification? There are metrics like resting HR, BP, lipids, etc. that define health - not how someone feels FFS! >:( Give them a brisk 5 on an inclined treadmill and see how beautiful they feel on the inside then (if they haven't passed out)
My Wife watches a programme called 'Fat Curvy Brides' (or something like that) - watching them burst into tears when they realise just how f**ked they look in the mirror never gets old!! But they are never so upset they choose lose some f**king weight though

:D I saw 1000 lb Sisters the other day where they 2 land whales around to their doctor appointments to see if they could get approved of surgery for fat fuckers (gastric bypass). The "small" sister was only like 400 lbs but her sister was over 600. The 400 lb gargantuan ended up qualifying and having the surgery but her behemoth sister couldn't lose hardly any weight at all.
At the end of the show the still fat "small" sister and her goofy fat ass husband were excited that they could now try to have a child! Like passing the shittiest genetics in the human population on to the next generation didn't even bother them. They were seeing a fertility doctor who was encouraging them. I almost got sick to my stomach.
