Title: RIP Laura Bass
Post by: Ron on January 23, 2021, 07:31:33 PM
Depression is so tough, and even tougher to help people who have it.   RIP Laura.

From Tonya Knight

Today is a very sad day for bodybuilders and fans all over the World. Laura Bass has been struggling with Depression for a very long time and unfortunately took her own life yesterday. Laura was one of the most kind and compassionate people I know. She nursed injured animals back to health. She was one of the most beautiful and talented IFBB PRO BODYBUILDER’s. I’m so proud to have been a friend of Laura’s❣️  Please Pray for her loved ones and most importantly her Son❣️ R.I.P. Sweet Laura Sending hugs and prayers to David & Maria Schupp

From Lonnie Teper

The news came from a Tonya Knight post: Laura Bass, former NPC and IFBB standout bodybuilder in the 90s, took her own life Friday at the age of 49. According to Knight, Bass had been suffering from depression for years. I became familiar with Bass in 1992 when she won the Overall at the Junior USA, and took the Heavyweight class at the Nationals the same year to earn pro status. I emceed the Ms. International (held in conjunction with the Arnold Classic) in the mid-90s and, although she didn't finish as high as she had hoped at the 1994 event, Bass was nice enough to take the time to tell me backstage how much she appreciated her introduction. As far as I know, she retired after doing the Ms. International the following year. She was very attractive and, based on that meeting backstage, was extremely nice, and humble. To Laura Bass, may you rest in peace.

I was thinking Nicole Bass, but I realized Nicole passed away in 2017.

RIP. Only 49 - too young.

Seriously sad. And disturbing.

Never met the woman, but I certainly remember her.

It sounds like she was a sweet lady.

This world chews decent folks to pieces.

My thoughts are with her family and friends.

RIP! A lot of people have a hard time dealing with the new normal brought on by the CCP biological weapon virus.

She was a very pretty woman and had many more years left. Suicide should never be an option.

Agreed. I'm going to Wendy's for a chicken burger, then to the Wal-Mart to buy a cigarette off someone in the parking lot.

I'll shovel the driveway first and go for a walk, but I can guarantee you that if gyms were open, I'd be working out, then follow it up with the hot tub, sauna, and pool.

Then I'd come back, and any desire to have either a cigarette OR a burger would be gone.

I should be 175-lb and pretty lean right now. Instead, I'm between 190-195, depending on the time of day.

My friend went from 235-lb to 285-lb in his job as youth counsellor! He used to be active with the youth clients, but now he sits at a desk at home.

Hey, no big deal. It's not like his less overweight father dropped dead of a massive heart attack at 63. Oh wait.

I don't know Laura Bass personally, but I am strongly of the mind that lock-down depression is a real thing.

I appreciated some of this time off, but this is too much now.

Well...wait, who said it's only for men?

Also, had anyone here spoken to Laura lately?

I hope the lock-down wasn't the issue at hand here. It may have been the straw that broke the camel's back, but I don't know.

FBB's will mess up their natural hormone production aswell, just like males on AAS. Also they probably are closer to man than female after many years on gear. That combined probably makes them suicidal.

nobody cares about depressed men, even though the suicide rate for men is much higher, but i would argue that's only because men take action and women would rather just whine to get attention :)

For some reason, this one kind of hits harder.

It just makes me sad.

I watched that interview Dave did with her. She seems really nice and “real”.

Hearing she has a teenage son made it that much worse

I genuinely feel so badly for him.

I remember her. After she won the Heavyweight class at the '92 Nationals, people were hailing her as the new standard for women's bodybuilding. She was to bring a softer, more feminine, package to the competitions.

This was also the year where Anja Schreiner was the featured girl on the 1992 Ms. Olympia poster, with small insets of the other women who were "also competing".......INCLUDING TWO-TIME and DEFENDING MS. OLYMPIA, LENDA MURRAY.

Bass was one of the few female bodybuilders that could still make a muscle magazine cover. Once she got her boob job, she got more fitness models shoots. Someone here posted her pics from Flex Magazine's "Power and Sizzle" spread from the early/mid 90s, where someone got the idea that making off-season female bodybuilders pose butt-@$$ naked would make them more appealing.

She was struggling with depression, how terrible. Condolences to her family and her friends.

Where you been hiding?

I've been here recently, even bumped up some threads about Tony Pearson and Lex Luger. I was discussing the Mr. Olympia last month, which I didn't know at the time was right here in Orlando, about 30 minutes from my house.

Plus, I've been on CLOUD NINE since Sunday night, because THE BUCS ARE GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL AGAIN.

Or, should I say.....STAYING IN THE SUPER BOWL!!!  FIRST TEAM EVER TO PLAY THE BIG ONE IN ITS HOME STADIUM!!! FIRE THE CANNONS!!!  ;D

The name doesn't ring a bell. But, I might recognize her picture. But, back then, they were looking for the next Cory Everson with a fierceness. That's why I brought up that Anja Schreiner thing, making her the feature on the 1992 Ms. Olympia poster, instead of defending champ, Lenda Murray.

I guess Murray got the message. She stopped tanning, got her nose done, freed herself of the braces once her teeth were straight, added some implants, and started competing just barely cut enough to win.

Bass and Murray were among a handful of female bodybuilders the editors would dare put on the covers in the 90s (outside a downsized and retired Everson).

There are millions of people who struggle daily with depression and for some it can literally feel like the world is ending.

Yet, I don't think Chivesky EVER made the cover of Flex or Muscle & Fitness, not even when she shrunk and switched to fitness competitions.

Unless I'm mistaken, no reigning Ms. Olympia since Murray has made a cover. And most of the time, Murray's covers weren't solo. She was with a fitness girl, a regular model or with fellow Ms. O, Cory Everson.
