And I dont mean today's "relaxed" pose where bodybuilders have their arms lifted to flare their lats. It says a lot when you look muscular and proportionate when you're just standing relaxed, without forcingly attempting to make a taper.
Surge Nubret comes to mind as a guy who looked great just with his hands by his side, Kevin Levrone aswell.

There is no way to make sure someone is completely relaxed. In fact you never are when standing.

I see that all the time now in local shows, they should put a stop to it.
Just make a rule where you have to have your thumb on the side of your quad

No one can compare to a relaxed Branch Warren but here's Steve Reeves.

That'd be a good rule or guideline. Also the spreading the feet and legs apart like a near semi split stance makes them look even more unaesthetic they're trying to go for the X frame look

In the good old days when WES and a couple of us other ancients were in charge (maybe even HOWARD and definitely COACH) there was an initial 'round' called the 'relaxed round' and each competitor had to stand facing front fully relaxed .... and this round did not continue until each competitor was completely relaxed.
And this relaxed round would continue after the head judge said "Turn to your left", Turn left", "Turn left" .... and finally face front.
On each turn each competitor had to be relaxed or he wound be corrected.
By the time each competitor had completed the relaxed round ... each judge would have each competitor ranked from first to last as so noted on each individual judge's unofficial worksheet.
The second round would consist of the mandatories while in a lineup .... and during this round the judges would 'improve' and make changes to his decision during the relaxed round.
Yada, yada, yada .....
And then the interesting tabulation process comes into play ...;. but it hurts my brain too damn much to go into too much detail after too many Tequila shots in celebration of St. Patrick's day ..... so I'll turn this over to Howard who knows this shit pretty damn good ,,, but probably not as much as I think I do.
