I had never seen this hand placement before seeing this pic. He has the bar wedged between his thumbs and index fingers. I tried it with an empty bar and it felt pretty comfortable. I’ve always found the cross handed grip awkward.
As always, apologies for the training thread😉

Olympic style.
Might be uncomfortable at first if your wrists aren't flexible, but it's the best for stability.
-
the vince gironds school of training. I think howorth came up with this innovation on his own though
-
;D the peek-a-boo bench for shoulder work.
-
If you are training for hypertrophy is there any reason to do front sqauts? I'm not so sure of that. You can stay more upright with other modifications that don't cut off your airflow and make you uncomfortable and unstable.

** bodybuilding post reported ** :P
Vince had some unique methods, some were also Gobshite. Like the bench-press to the neck, etc. (Shoulder wrecker).
And his anti-squat thing was pretty odd.
He did call 'Cuckold Schwarzenberg' a 'fat-fuck' so he gets some points there. ;)
Some guy wrote some books on "Vinces Secret Fart-Locker".

I’ve never had too much success with the exercise.I believe it’s because I’m tall and it’s hard to stay upright. However, I remember back in the 80s seeing a heavyweight national level bodybuilder doing them with 405. Some of the biggest quads I’ve ever seen.

I had to mime it out to describe it - I cross my arms and hook my thumbs under the bar - palms down
Not flexible enough to do it uncrossed, or with the palms up

F**k me! That was a boring post - even for me... :-[

I always got better results doing front squats. I feel they take more weight off your lower back too. Less bending forward.
When i was really good at them i could squat ass to ankles and my upper body never changed position.

That looks more like an inverted rimming chair.

It’s somewhat of an isolation movement for the quads as the upright stance takes a lot of the hip extension away as opposed to back squats where your hips flex more on the way down. It’s like front squats are the tricep extensions and back squats are the close grip bench presses for quads.

Haha!
Bodybuilding is not ghey!

This will sound a little crazy but if you have moveable squat racks put them close together and use an ez curl bar for front squats.Cross your hands just like normal but the bend of the bar will fit right on your front delts. You will be amazed how tight and stable it feels.
-
Using straps with an Olympic style will be less harsh on the wrist and could be worth consideration
-
Always end up with pain in elbows with those front squats. But somehow Zerchers do not hurt my elbows.
-
I maintain a tight grip on the bar doing front squats and cleans as opposed to letting it roll on to the fingertips.
Never felt safe doing the cross arm thing.
For bodybuilding purposes just do hack squats on a hack machine.
-
joe meeko mostly did front squats, claimed to have gone up to 600 lbs in the move. his legs were pretty good.
-
I hate doing front squats using a barbell mainly because holding the bar is so uncomfortable for me. It's not exactly the same movement but I prefer doing them this way.

These can wreck your knees and hips due to the unnatural movement. Make sure you have your feet way out in front of you to prevent this.
If i could only do one movement for legs it would be BB front squats, full depth.

;D intensity insanity training

Good advice. One's knees should never extend beyond their toes when doing any type of squat.

Old wives tale, to train quads need to squat in a manner that maximises knee flexion

Wrong. Totally false.

Go for it. They are your knees. Even if it is an old wives' tale, it has worked well for my knees.

This is true for squats.
Using a hack sled with your feet/ankles directly in line with your knees and spine is a great way to hurt yourself.
You can't push your hips back behind your knees like you can with a squat.

Good article. Advice mostly geared towards the power lifter. The author makes the importance of employing the "hips first" when squatting abundantly clear.
