Man Dies After Being Sucked Into An MRI Machine
An unfortunate series of events involving a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine has led to the death of a man at a hospital in India.
Rajesh Maruti Maru, a 32-year-old, was thrust into the MRI machine on Saturday while he was visiting an elderly relative at the BYL Nair Charitable Hospital in Mumbai, India. As the Hindustan Times reports, the man was apparently told by a junior member of staff to carry a metal cylinder of liquid oxygen into a room containing an MRI machine.
Unbeknownst to everyone, the MRI machine was turned on. This caused Maru to be suddenly jolted pulled towards the machine, causing the oxygen tank to rupture and leak. The man later died after inhaling large amounts of oxygen. His body also bled heavily as a result of the accident.
"When we [the hospital staff] told him that metallic things aren't allowed inside an MRI room, he said 'sab chalta hai, hamara roz ka kaam hai' [it's fine, we do it every day]. He also said that the machine was switched off. The doctor, as well as the technician, didn't say anything,” Harish Solanki, Maru's relative, told NDTV.
"It's because of their carelessness that Rajesh died," Solanki added.
Police are currently examining the CCTV footage of the incident and have arrested at least two members of hospital staff for the negligence. The local government has also awarded the man's family 500,000 rupees ($7,855) in compensation.
"We have arrested a doctor and another junior staff member under section 304 of the Indian penal code for causing death due to negligence," Mumbai police spokesman, Deepak Deoraj, told AFP.
MRI scanners use incredibly strong magnetic fields, along with electric field gradients and radio waves, to generate highly detailed 3-dimensional images of the body. That’s why you should remove all metal objects and metallic jewelry before going near one of these machines.
It sounds like a freak accident from an urban legend, but remarkably this kind of accident has happened before. A 6-year-old boy was killed in 2001 by an MRI machine in New York after its magnetism caused an oxygen tank to fly towards him, crushing his skull.

Human Body Parts Found Inside Nose Of Bullet Train
On route to Tokyo, a driver of a bullet train heard an abnormal sound as he headed through a tunnel with over 200 passengers on board.
The noise, a dull thud, came from the train's bonnet, the Japan Times reports. Thinking nothing of it, the driver continued his journey without reporting it to the authorities. He dismissed the sound as caused by hitting a small animal, a spokesperson from the train line told Sora News 24. He'd heard a similar noise before, and decided not to stop as there was no threat to passenger safety.
However, some 32 kilometers (20 miles) later at Kokura Station, a large crack in the front of the train was discovered. Despite the superficial damage done to the train, it was allowed to continue on to the main island of Honshu, where it was inspected more thoroughly. It was here that staff made a rather grim discovery.
Inside the crack in the nose of the train, they found parts of a human body. The dull thud heard inside the tunnel turned out to be caused by a collision with a man, rather than an animal as the train driver had thought. The impact had been enough to crack the front of the bullet train, and part of his body had become lodged within the crack in the train's nose.
Later on, authorities found more body parts inside the tunnel, which they matched to the body parts they found inside the train through fingerprinting. An unoccupied car was found near an access ladder used by maintenance workers, the Japan Times reports. The police are treating the death of the 52-year-old carer from Fukuoka Prefecture as a suicide.
The incident is being investigated upon the transport minister's instruction, with the West Japan Railway Co. focusing on the driver's decision not to alert the authorities straight away upon hearing the collision.
If you or someone you know are in crisis, call the toll-free National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), available 24 hours a day. The service is available to anyone and all calls are confidential.

MRI machines don't kill people...oxygen tanks kill people.
