It's rare to see Boyer Coe with visible abs. I remember an article he wrote where he said that people would say, "Boyer, you have such a small waist but where are your abs?"
-
Boyer Coe you mean

Well he has 4.
But that is a great photo.

Who is Boyer Cole?

You're right. I corrected it. Thanks for pointing that out. I hate misspelling words.

Great pic but look how smooth his ab area is. Not a block in sight. I read that he wrote that to bring out his abs he actually had to develop the ab muscle itself and not do these endless crunches and situps. He started training them like how he trained every other muscle. With weights and resistance. Things like doing situps on a decline while holding a dumbbell on your chest.
It's used to be thought that if you used weights and resistance to work your abs you will develop a thick waist. That's so silly and counterintuitive. Your abs are a very flat muscle. I've never seen abs that I thought were overdeveloped. Now maybe training you obliques with weights would seem to widen and thicken your waist.

Yes, for some reason both he and Casey seemed more impressive when they were barely out of their teens.

Hah, I remember when I first saw that pic. When I use to see Boyer's arm by itself, I use to think it doesn't get any better than that. Arms were his strong point. But when compared to the King it just disappears. I'm sure if Arnold were competing today he would be accused of using synthol.
-
Did he use a hair system?
-
One of the nicest guys Ive met in the Iron-Game.
Spent a SAT with him in 2007 doing a Q&A type thing at the NJ Strongman Dinner (AOBS).
Great guy...

Arnold's arms used to be really good.
-
Great bodybuilder. His only real weakness was abs. Who knows how far he could have gone had abs been even average.

This guy did weighted sit-ups.

He should have used a higher rep range.

I saw Coe way back in the mid seventies in Worcester or Boston Mass. can`t quite recall which, but the image of his physiqe on that day as a guest poser still impresses me to this very day.
He looked unreal in person.
-
The initial photo of Boyer with the beard is from 1982. He competed in the London Olynpia that year with the beard. Onstage that year, Boyer looked leaner and drier than ever. Abs truly visable for the first time. But Boyer looked clearly down in size too. Many speculated that he entered the show without anabolics. As that same year...Boyer had been doing Arthur Jones Nautilus experiments on videotape. And Boyer admitted that during those Nautilus experiments that he off all anabolics. In an interview with John Hanson in recentvyears...Boyer says that the reason that he was so much smaller in 82 at the Olympia but more ripped than ever...was because he used an intense diet drug called FASTEN. Which was more like a methamphetamine. And that it ate up a ton of his muscle but left him shredded and stringy. That being said....82 and the above photo with beard....absolutely have Boyer showing rare abs.

Boyer had quite the year in 1981.

Damn! I didn't realize he competed up to 1995.

Boyer is 75, and still alive. He did have a bypass surgery many moons ago, but fine ever since.
In his day they weren't as reckless (with the compounds) as some of the monsters are today.
A lot of the 90's guys are dropping these days, as the cycles grew larger and longer, lives grew shorter. (life spans).
Heard Leon Brown has liver-cancer and maybe wont be around too much longer. Leon is 75 as well I believe...

He was great.
But still he was no Bhanky.

always liked this early pic of Coe:
I'm pretty sure he's a teenager or 20/21 in that photo
Weird that when he was in his 30's and participating in Arthur Jones training experiment (which I think was early 1980's) he looked so much smaller. Even his famous calves are arms look small.
BTW - there are some weird machines in this video including a sideways lying leg curl @ the 4:30 mark which looks ridiculous
-
Off cycle. Jones may have required it.

Hunter S Thompson upped the dose
-
Tricep looks freaky
-
Boyer was off drugs while he trained at Nautilus. I think Jones abandoned the project when Coe didn't make the gains Jones thought he would make. Boyer looks amazing off drugs and you could see how he would blow up with a cycle.
-
Coe won a ton of major contests and the most prestigous of the non-Weider contests the NABBA Mr. Universe twice and the AAU Mr. America....then went on to kick ass in Dan Luries contests, then in the IFBB...................a lmost everything except The Olympia
When I saw him he looked small until he took off his black Golds Gym track suit.........he looked insanely incredible.
I was always a fan and the pics from this photo shoot.....there was around 8-10 pics I believe used to be my favorite shots of Boyer:
-
A true freak of nature
