Hope all of you in danger of the east coast flash floods are safe. Hopefully, once again the media has made much to do about nothing and you are all safe, high and dry. The videos on CNN make the flooding look really bad.

I now have a puddle in my yard after this horrendous New England flooding.

New York City Update: Last night was terrible. Over the span of 6-7 hrs, we had tremendous amounts of rain and substantial flooding. Many parts to our subway system are still shut down. Remember, the NYC subway system is practically the city's circulatory system, as it provides connections between all of our boroughs and makes it feasible for the vast majority of commuters to get to and from work.
That said, as of this moment, the sun is out and the temperature is great. The streets look to be practically back to normal. Besides the subway issues, the only other problem I am noticing is tons of traffic given that most subway riders have been forced to either utilize their cars or utilize alternate means of transportation (bus, ubers, lyft etc).

This is pretty good news. Isn't Manhattan pretty close to sea level? Like around 10 above on average? I read were the deepest part of the subway is 175 ft. It is understandable that the subways would flood. There must be a pretty good pump system though out the subway lines.

You have seen the video footage yourself so this is not a matter of “the media” blowing things out of proportion. Parts of PA, NJ, and NY have never seen rain and flooding like this with rivers overrunning their banks and entire neighborhoods and parts of highways under water. Parts of the South see this flooding routinely, but the northeast is not hardened for this. That said, whenever I see dozens of cars and trucks stuck in deep water (or snow for that matter) and abandoned I often think “you KNEW a storm was coming. Where were you going that was so important that you thought it worth venturing out? Obviously you didn’t make it to your destination, your vehicle is now totaled, and you may have lost your life. Was it really worth it?” ::)

In Jersey in one town it knocked or partially knocked down about 20 houses. The tornado was west of me. I live on the east by the ocean.
One cop told me a story about a cop getting ready to retire. There were abandoned cars near fast moving water in a flood. He tried to check a car and the current increased. His police car was swept away. He went with the current too but was able to grab a tree. He held on for three hours. They lost communication with him and thought he drowned. A cop looking for him was swept away. In the darkness and water he lost his police radio and cell phone. He also found a tree to hold on. He started to fire his gun so they would know where to look for him. He was rescued too.
People took plenty of videos of the tornado. Major highways in NJ had to be shut down because of the flooding.

Really? That is your response to the devastation impacting millions of people across several states? In St Charles parish literally every structure has sustained damage. Grand Isle is literally totally uninhabitable. Millions are without power in sweltering heat and no a/c; many gas stations are without gas or without power to pump the gas; hundreds of thousands of people are without running water. Hurricane Ida hit Louisiana as a category 4 hurricane—one of the worst to ever hit the United States—and spiraled all the way up to New England. Perhaps you’re right… it’s not so bad. Just misleading media. ::)

The track of the storm is so critical. Here in Greenville, SC we often just get sideswiped by tropical storms left over by hurricanes. But an hour north of us, Asheville, NC, can get hammered. So yes, media can make it sound like everywhere is hit at times.
A little over a year ago a tornado hit about a quarter mile of my house, going up a hill and then jumping over a main highway and touching down again. I saw it coming from my balcony. Funny thing is there was absolutely zero damage in the neighbor hood either side of a 50 yard path. I mean not a single leaf down. But in the middle, it looked like a bomb went off. I have an office a mile a way and it was right in the path of the tornado but just got missed. I went to check the damage and one of those outdoor sheds from Home Depot (across the street) had been lifted up and placed in the middle of my parking lot. Un fucking real!

Low lying areas near rivers and bayous flood.
Areas near floodplains and backwater drainage channels.
Ponds, lakes, etc.
This is what happens when it rains with high intensity for a long duration.
The areas that are flooded are no surprise.
Most of these areas have flooded before and will flood again.

Lower Manhattan abuts the upper bay of NY Harbor, just kissing the Atlantic. Highest natural point is at 265’ at around 185th St (it ends at about 220th St). All areas abutting the NY Harbor are at risk of submersion.
The Atlantic storm of 1821 had a surge so great that both the Hudson and East Rivers were connected as far north as Canal St. (about a mile north of the southern end of Manhattan). 2012’s storm Sandy wasn’t as powerful, but its surge was higher because of the high tide.
Climate change has been pounding the area since at least 1821. ::)

My basement got about three inches of water. Going to be a few trips to the dump this weekend but we were lucky compared to some of our neighbors.
