If I had to guess, his skin was extremely dehydrated and it took on an old, leathery appearance. It probably looked much improved after his skin rehydrated.

Along with taking diuretics, he may have worn one of those dehydration belts that women wear.

This guy had some nasty stretch marks on his abs, no amount of Pro tan could ever cover this up :-X
