Yeah, it’s always been that way. Some new exercise gadgetcomes out and then a while later you see a lot of them in the trash.

The bikes are too expensive to just toss, this, so many on Craigslist.

I got this email a few days ago. They knew things were gonna go south:

Even during the lockdowns, folks were looking for cheaper Peloton style bikes and trying to find cheaper Peloton style programs. Also a lot of gym culture is actually physically being in a gym, so as people start going back, no one's going to care about having an expensive exercise bike in their house.

Also they learned what York, Weider, etc..... learned years ago, exercise equipment is a durable good. Barbell sets, good machines, etc.... all last decades plus, if maintained. Can't sell what people already have.

They should've came up with a line of supplements, etc... like those guys did.

Peloton's monthly subscription was the recurring income stream.

Peloton's monthly subscription was the recurring income stream.

Sure but people were always looking for cheaper Peloton style programs run by cheaper sources, etc.... Then NordicTrack and others started nibbling at it.

I'd never invest in home gym stocks (and most franchise gyms for that matter), too much can go wrong with it.

I had to get a temp job to stick around a shitty area

i took a job working for a guy who had a warehouse and did commercial gym
installs - he would buy out old gyms and we’d go in a take EVERYTHING - lockers , desks , computer screens, fckn lights

we would do expensive home installs - maybe a concept2 rower, a peloton, commercial treadmills - those were common , but we bought more of that ahit than installed - he would tell them he’d buy back equipment when he sold it

the real winners are the dudes who did the home gym in the garage over covid - but after 6 months of smelling your own farts you wonder why you keep hittin training plateaus - no females to stare at, no bigger dudes you can hate on but really use for motivation - starting at yourself and dudes on youtube isn’t the same as REAL LIFE

I still use mine and I can see how it would get monotonous. I’m sure it’ll do the same as CrossFit. The doe harders will stick with it. I still ride 3-4 times a week, it’s low impact for me but I may start swimming again to break it up a bit.

They've had an interesting trajectory.  What would have been  a better way to run this company?

On one hand, there's some obvious faults in building a company around a piece of  expensive, heavy-duty equipment that rarely needs to be serviced or replaced. On the other hand, the founder of peloton said that he actually wanted to use off the shelf components to make basically an online media company, but there was nothing on the market that could do what he wanted and customers responded better to higher prices. The recurring revenue stream made sense to a certain degree, but there are all sorts of flaws with it in practice. I think they were in a unique position to get dicked around by a covid bump. They maybe could have been fine appealing to an upwardly mobile niche for the remainder of the spinning trend, but it seems like everybody had the same idea of getting a bike they didn't want that much because they could sell it at a slight loss when it got boring.

The loss in prestige is going to be a big hurdle for them.

It's a great cardio activity that's good for the spirit too. I've gotten away from biking. Maybe I should get back into it. I used to ride a road bike and a mountain bike. Now I use a hybrid for comfort. It's a  slow bike but I'm a slow cyclist.  I ride by myself so no need to keep up with speed guys with their skinny tire racing bikes. When I use to go long with my racing bike I thought the riding position was torture.

Same here.  Hybrid bike.

Probably average 10 miles an hour around my local area.

I can't run because of a bad knee but riding a bike is ok.

You can do both for some variety.

Not even them really.  Serious cyclists train indoors on real bikes, you connect the bike to a "trainer" like this thing:

I’m ex track cyclist and roadie who had all the best gear ;)

I’m pretty confident I owned the best looking bikes in Sydney. Generally had 3 at a time, Italian around 20k per bike. Yes I owned a Kickr. Power metres I ran an SRM, quark, Garmin vector, stages at the same time. Whatever dumb shit you could blow money on I did lol 😂

Indoor training on road bikes sucks. I tried so many different things and it was always uncomfortable.

The Wahoo Kickr bike is about 6.5k but it’s uncomfortable. I can get a Nordictrack s22 for 3k which does all the same things like elevation, lower, erg mode plus it has a screen and software built in unlike the 6.5k Kickr.

I still ride mine and probably will continue to do so. I like it and what it offered, but there’s no way they can continue on. I’ve read they pay their top riders over Half a million a year. I can not imagine they’ll survive without starting the pay cuts, at which point some of these self important instructors will probably jump ship, furthering the demise of the company. Doubtful they find another gig like that though.

This thread inspired me so I bought a Nordictrack S27 and setup it up this evening.

100x better than using any of my prior training setups.

I did a Moab MTB training video and the instructor talks you through it. Bike adjusts elevation and power.  The screen is great as it gives you something to look at. Built in fan works awesome.

It was 35mins and fuck me id forgotten just how hard indoor training is vs outdoor. This takes the pressures off my needing to train for MTB season trips next month. Instead of 2hrs of driving to/from trails I can jump on this and do a much more solid training session.

I have used Zwift in the past and I couldnt get into it at all. The real life videos on the Nordictrack I instantly registered with.
