Wisdom and Mike Mentzer don't go together.
-
I listened to about half of the vid- and Mentzer was correct. I went on a very low carb diet (50 gms a day) to lose fat a while back- and became a scrawny version of myself. I also was unable to do any high intensity exercise without getting exhausted.
Now to lose fat I just count calories and my diet is well over 2/3 carbs.

A calorie is a calorie.

Mentzer always made shit difficult.....just train hard and for the most part eat clean healthy bodybuilding type food with a junk day here or there and get adequate rest and water.
Any older guy here that has no idea what or how to eat for his best progress after decades of training should just quit and go for the dad body look.
Of course we should never stop trying to learn but psuedo egghead Mike made things more complicated than they should have been and got rich doing it when no one needed his silly ass training fad of training once a year.
He built his initial size with plenty of volume and drugs, and maintained it with less frequent training and more drugs........bid fucking deal, plus he was a crybaby,a quitter, and a sore loser.
Never was a fan like most sheep who were enthralled by his idiocy and acted like he was explaning rocket science.
Just fucking lift, and lift hard..... over time if you have half a brain you`ll find out what makes YOU (NOT MIKE) respond best.
Dont forget Mikes genetics would have had him looking like a beast no matter what he did.....especially while being on a ton of gear.

Don't forget he got cut using speed too.

Along with way too much cardio and almost no sleep.

The philosophical side of Mike Mentzer..
Re. The cult of celebrity
"Nothing human is foreign to me"

I'm 40. Stuck in a lifting rut for years. About 2 years ago I started keto. After a month i lost weight and my lifts went to shit. Decided to stick with it after seeing the navy seals all do it. Once I got acostomed to it and increased my fat, I'm stronger then ever. Plus I do a lot of mountain climbing and my endurance has gotten better.
We're all different and if you think you know anything about nutrition you don't, and neither do i

It works, ofcourse, your body adapts creating ketones. But it's not Optimal(!). Key phrase here, "optimal", for retaining muscle and strength. Just as Mike Mentzer points out.

I still think, for the greater part, highly of Mentzer. Just Mentzer in 1978 to 1979. After the loss, he was a total loss. He became the Methsiah of Bodybuilding. Too bad as I think he could've come back stronger and better than ever if he had just focused his disgust into training instead of whining.

Sorry, Wes, but that isn't a theory of hypertrophy. Mike did have a theory but I don't think it was correct. Volume is more important than intensity. You need both.
What you recommend is for bodybuilders to see what works for them. Trial and error. Might work for some but clearly the vast majority of bodybuilders do not
build super size no matter what they do.
-
Mentzer was heavily on steroids and meth, so it is what it is, take it for what it's worth

I do not think Wes ever said it was about your theory of hypertrophy. 'n' sheit. The real truth is that it is all about drugs and surviving them.
By the way. You never built super size. Kinda makes your theory just that.

Keto diets are pure horseshit for any high intensity endurance exercise. I followed a strict keto diet for two years. Got super lean and my lifting was just fine. But when I tried to bicycle race at a high level I was completely flat. I changed to a high carb diet and my performance skyrocketed.

Truth.

Let's not put these guys on unnecessary pedestals. Mentzer had nice muscle shape, great arms. But the development and muscle overall, nothing extraordinary. Many many guys would/could put on the same amount of muscle with the same drugs, it just wouldn't look the same.
Look at Mentzer sitting on the couch. What is there? Great arm shape. Mentzer = mostly Deca. The rest not so important.

Training every two weeks works for me.
