Aside from the pullover machine that equipment sucks.

I like how the Mentzers are working out so hard in the first vid they look all shiny and stuff.

Can wreck your shoulders.

Mike Mentzer was one of the very few bbers having long muscle bellies all around.
He sometimes seem to have lacking chest but don't know why! He seem to have great pec attachments, full and long pecs with no gap.
He also lacked back detail/lower traps maybe, but had amazing v taper and waist to delt ratio.

I found the opposite. It stretched the shoulder joint freeing my locked in shoulders.

I've known 2 people who tore rib cartilage and Brooks Kubik (author of Dinosaur Training) suffered permanent shoulder damage from it.

The Mentzers were great beings when they were young

I used the BodyMaster pullover machine for 20+ years with no problem at all. I use a full range of motion and hold the contraction at the bottom of each rep and get a full stretch at the top
I rarely ever see anyone doing this correctly. They try to pull with their arms rather than pushing with the pad on the elbows and often don't adjust the seat or the range of the motion of the arm bar/pad.

Amazing the human debris Arnold left in his wake.
-
Boyer Coe looked bigger as a teenager with a few years of training (and obviously on drugs) than he did in these training videos which I think are from the mid or late 1980's

That could have been the problem for them. Pulling with the arms instead of pushing the pads. Many exercises have trainers putting the focus on the wrong place.

Makes me wonder if they were using too much weight and that forced their arms back too far. It does have a safety foot bar to stop the travel. I think it's the best machine Nautilus ever made. I've used it for when it was available to me in college and at work before I retired and never had a problem.

I believe he admitted he was off cycle for the Nautilus video taping. He was back to his huge self for contests after those films were taped. I thought he looked damn good for not having any drugs in his system.

I agree, It’s not the kind of machine to load up with the weights and set PRs. Couple sets of 10-20 reps and you’ve got a good pump & stretch going.

I used in college as well, briefly, as no one used the Nautilus room of equipment.

Some of the others were quite good IMO, but there were a few I found very awkward, like the "arm cross" on the Double Chest machine, the shrug and the karate chop Multi-Triceps.
The Duo Squat was hellaciously effective for me, but the spinal compression was ridiculous.

Yes remind me of Yates, had a flat chest during competition. Chest needs more volume to blow up like Arnold's or Ferrigno's chest

Yep. Every one who participated in any Nautilus experiment was supposedly off. I cant remember who said it but one of those bodybuilders back then said Boyer was the only one who kept his word. These films were supposed to document and replicate the results of the famous colorado experiment. It was supposed to be 'proof'
It didnt work out so well. The Mentzers argued with Jones. Boyer was disappointed in the lack of organization. Everyone left the project before it was finished. Which is a good thing because the only thing it would have proved is that the CO experiment was horseshit.. in the few work outs they had Boyer showed no improvement.

If I recall correctly Boyer actually got smaller and weaker as the "experiment" went on.

What did the Mentzers argue with Jones about?
Something about Jones's offputting demeanor, barking out orders, talking to grown men as if they were children. Jones told Ray to do something, Ray said "no". Jones repeated the order and Ray raised his voice and said zomething along the lines of 'you heard me' Ray was apparently known for a short temper. Not sure what Mike's problem was but he left when Jones told Ray to leave.
Im not picking sides here. Jones was a bullshitter par excellance but he WAS paying 4 or 5 grown men to sit around and lift weights all day plus room and board. If I'm paying your bill im not gonna have you raise your voice at me. On the other hand I wouldn't stick around some creepy asshole barking demands at me. Either way. Ray's footprint in the sport greatly diminished after that and Mike lost his mind for a while.

I wouldn't argue with Jones because he always had a gun on him.

The late IFBB judge from Canada, Winston Roberts....told me that Mike and Ray would perform private S&M shows for wealthy gays for a nice payday. They would only do it together....not with other men. No sex. Just leather outfits and physical abuse to the schmoe. I was in stitches laughing out loud as he told me this. Winston told me that a top ranking IFBB judge and promoter, Dominic Certo was one of the Mentzer brothers top contributors.

Your credibility on this board is less than zero, lol. You make up more shit than the Biden administration.

Jones side of the story
It's hard to believe they were all fired because of drugs, laziness, stupidity (probably anytime they didn't agree with Jones), etc. That's kind of shitty to dump on all the guys who supported him in the past and were supporting him at the time of that interview.
On a side note, Jones sure get get the women. Look at his wife. :P

Yeah. It is shitty. It was his project. It failed because of his management of it. It was bullshit from the beginning but he blames the bodybuilders...incompete nce, laziness, he even refers to them as thieves. Including Viator! The main subject in his experiment. Bottom line: it was his idea, his concept, his product and whenever it came time to prove it, it was a bunch of excuses.

I met a weird guy at an airport one time, he would just talk with anyone. For some reason he started talking to me about Arthur Jones. I can't remember most of what he said but he said that Jones was 100% nuts. But this guy was also. Not much of a story, I know.

Jones side of the story
Jones was a nut case. Boyer Coe said in an interview that he believed Jones was connected to the CIA . He had his own TV studio & told Boyer Coe that one day all information will be on CD discs. This was years before it happened. I believe this was a John Hansen interview.

Well Mentzer was a meth head and was supposedly institutionalized at one point. I would not be surprised if both he and Ray had mental health issues.
Boyer always seemed like a good natured southern guy so I can't imagine what grounds Jones would have had to fire him
Jones was obviously also a nutjob so it's a pretty volatile mixture of nutbags and ego's.

Yeah, the Mentzers were nuts. Never heard a bad word about Boyer. Viator was a huge proponent of Jones and went back to volume training when he made his IFBB comeback. When I first read his training program with all that volume it shocked me because I had always thought he trained only HIT.
It appears the only competitive bodybuilder that stuck with a HIT program was Dorian and at the end of his career he seemed to be tearing a muscle every workout. I still get in arguments with HIT guys on Youtube who think it's the Holy Grail of training systems.

Hunter Labrada does pretty low volume workouts these days

Also, this guy has done very low volume pretty much his entire training career
