Have you ever seen Godfather 1&2 together as “A Novel for Television”? It’s great because it goes in chronological order, so the scenes from part two are no longer flashbacks but how it actually plays. I saw it a long time ago on A&E or History Channel like that. Other than that, you got a solid list.
-
I'd throw in
Gotti (1996)
Mean Streets
Carlito's Way
Thief
Fingers (1978)
The Nickel Ride (1974)
The Long Good Friday
Triad Election (The Triad Series)
City of God
Gomorrah (2008)
Once Upon a Time in America
------------
If we included caper films with a mob element, I could add 20-30 more.
-
"City Of Industry" with Harvey Keitel.......vastly underated.

Mean Streets is very good. I need to watch Carlito's Way. Is the Gotti you referenced the one with Armand Assante? If so, that was a miss on my part. I fucking loved that movie. Made for HBO, right?

No, but I've heard it's great. If you ever see it on the guide and think of it, let me know.

Yep, years ago, went in not expecting much, and would up loving it -

Gotti (Armand Assante) was quite good.
Did you like Travolta's take?
I fucking hate Travolta's face so goddamn much that there was/is no way I can watch that. LOL.

The Travolta one is horrible, but a fun watch because it's so bad.
This was my review years ago -
3/10 as a mob film. 7/10 as a good bad film.
The Good - Nice sound track. No flow to it, but some decent songs.
The Bad -
Travolta looks like he's wearing a rubber mask in many scenes.
Very little fleshing out of the story. A lot of one line explanations for murders ( E.g. - "Oh, I had to go do a piece of business"), and lots of use of old news footage to help the story along. Not well done, more like "We don't have the cash to film this, so stick that news clip here". Very cheap looking.
Casting - Travolta hams it up a bit. No one looks like the historical character they play, minus the Castellano guy, who's in it for like 2 minutes. Stacy Keach is Stacy Keach, no real acting. It's like they said "How much for 15 minutes?". Good for you Stacy, get that cash.
Pruitt Taylor Vince - Horrible. I like the guy, but he tries an Italian accent for three lines, then just talks like a mid-Southerner. Hilarious in a bad way. He's in it for like 20 minutes.
The other characters are played by 4th string character actors doing bad, stereo typical acting. Just :-\. It's like they all called each other, and said "You want to get in this?".
The other extras look like they were cast out of whatever deli or high school was open.
Filming - Lots of tight jump cuts to hide the low budget and anachronisms. Yer not fooling anybody. Lots of empty streets, and empty club scenes. No budget for special effects. The big famous Gotti fireworks show is three duplicated stock footage scenes of the same red, white, and green rockets going off.
There's also a scene of a car bombing that looks like they just lit a puddle of gas on the front seats. Cropped real tight.

Probably should have done two lists. One for mafioso heavy organized crime and another for all other organized crime flicks.

American gangster was the dumbest movie ever and should not be on that list. Pretentious garbage with no substance.

I watched the very start of the new Gotti movie starring John Travolta, but I didn't finish it.
My impression was that John Travolta did a way better job than I expected. He really good in character, and was a good fit for that movie, IMO.
Has anyone watched it? Is it worth watching? It seemed to me to focus more on the later part of Gotti's life, rather than the entire rise and fall - but I only saw the beginning.
-
Vin Diesel did a good job in "Find Me Guilty" [2006]. I couldn't find it available for purchase on YouTube. Peter Dinklage plays the defense lawyer of the mob.
Checking out this review of it now:
I think it's cool to hear the real life interpretations of these movies by people who lived it. Some of these movies are so out to lunch, it's crazy.
-
the godfather is the most perfect movie ever made, every scene and the acting are absolutely perfect
the 50th anniversary edition is in theaters now, it's the only movie i've wanted to see in theaters in years
part 2 is great but i will never understand how people prefer it over the original, part 3 is garbage i can't believe how bad it was

Godfather 1 & 2 are in a league of their own.
While not a movie, Sopranos is better than most Italian mafia movies.
American Me is a top 5 gangster movie. It’s right under The Godfather tier. People were killed for cooperating in the making of the movie. The Mexican Mafia is a very serious criminal organization.
-
Series wise (Sopranos already mentioned) -
Gomorra is near the top for me. Another good short one is "Romanzo Criminale".
Next tier -
4 Blocks (Germany), Zero,Zero,Zero, Umbre (Shadows), and Boardwalk Empire, Ozark.
3rd tier - Dogs of Berlin, Suburra, Blinded by the Lights, and Quarry.
The ones in the third tier aren't bad, but they are a little weak or weren't fleshed out enough.
-
Narcos:Mexico 1,2 &3 the very best in a long time. Also Narcos... Pablo Escobar story
Godfather and Godfather 2 of course. Godfather 1, almost every movie frame could stand alone.
Just my view but "The Irishman", very disappointed.
Too long a list of some great mobster movies to mention.
Season 4 of "Snowfall" stated. South Central LA, good show.

Word. 2 is the best sequel ever made. 3 is just a shame.

Pope of Greenwich Village is a good one not mentioned.
What’s amazing about The Godfather movies is that they aren’t nearly as good as the book.

Wish I wasn't too lazy to read the book.

Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels
Like a gangsters version of Indiana Jones !.

Layer Cake is a good one. Strong cast including a young Bond and Bane

I'm from Aus, so not surprisingly these two suggestions are too.
Broadly speaking they are crime films/series, but there's a lot of dark/dry humour in both. It's quirky stuff that gives an insight into Australian sense of humour, I won't guarantee everyone would like it.
Movie - "Chopper" semi dramatised movie based on real life events of Melbourne (my home town) criminal, stand over man, and later on media darling Mark "chopper" Read. Some of the characters in it are combinations of a couple of people, one has their name changed because they were still around at the time of filming.
Series - no idea if anyone can get it overseas, probably available as a torrent - 3 seasons of it "Mr Inbetween"It takes a couple of episodes to get moving but you might like it. Its central character is a strip club bouncer who does anything from debt collection to murder for hire as a side gig. The role is played by the writer himself, after a low budget film (that has a bit of a cult following) he made well over ten years previously gained some interest overseas for making a series out of the idea, but died on the vine, later to be picked up by a local tv network and helped along by actor Joel Edgerton's brother Nash who came on board as producer or something like that. (the movie is also entertaining, called 'the magician' but there's a fair bit of local references in it and may not be as easily understood by people outside of Australia/New Zealand)
There's also a few Australian crime mini-series called 'underbelly' the first of which focuses on the underworld war that saw a number of people in Melbourne's criminal 'community' murdered around the very late 90s. It's fairly accurate on the police procedure side of things, but the portrayal of the criminals involved is close to complete bullshit. Most if not all of them were nothing at all like the way they were portrayed (and I'm not suggesting I was rubbing shoulders with all of them on a constant basis or anything like that, melbourne isn't that big, anyone working some of the more notorious nightclubs during that era would have known them to some extent, not as friends or anything) I honestly wouldn't recommend these series, though they did rate well on local tv at the time.

I don't mind the first 3 seasons of Underbelly that much. The 4th wasn't too bad either. The best version of Underbelly to me was the NZ version - "Underbelly: Land of the Long Green Cloud". Mostly just rating them as an American, and entertainment value. I can understand how someone familiar with the ins and outs wouldn't like it.
One Aussie film series I did like was "Blue Murder" that came out in the 90's.
--------------------------------------
One comedic Mafia series that's ok is "Lilyhammer", It was Steven Van Zandt's project that came out after the Sopranos, and it got a little unfairly maligned. It's pretty funny.
