They did the battery swap out rather than on-site recharge. If electric cars were designed to make this simple, this is one option for making recharge practical.
The piano music sounds more like the the era of the silent movies than 1943.
In any case we need nuclear power, either Thorium FLTR or perhaps Helion's fusion power, to fully electrify transportation.

We had them all throughout the U.S., they were called streetcars. General Motors & other oil company interests conspired to replace them with buses and cars.
Now we are dependent on oil for most everything with no way out :'(

Those lead acid batteries must have weighed a ton which is why they needed the lift.

I think it was more market forces at play.
You couldn't make long distance journeys easily in those electric cars and you couldn't travel very fast. Why would anyone choose that over a gas powered car which could get you somewhere further away and at a faster speed at the same cost?
VHS won over betamax because people wanted to be able to record tv for longer. Betamax was superior in almost every other way.
