On a semi-related note, if a crowd surrounds your vehicle and starts pounding on your windows, you should have the legal right to run anyone involved over that is necessary in order to extract yourself from the potentially life threatening situation.

Citizens shouldn't be illegally detained and threatened by other citizens, without immediate legal recourse.

Wouldn’t it be self defense to run them over to get out of situation? I know I would do it.

Not if you run them over and then back up.

I think even people who think they would never run over a mob, might do so without even thinking about it if the situation got intense enough.

Until there isn't a possibility of prison time for a person forcefully evading detention by a mob, a button within the vehicle that, when pressed, would blast out a rapid gunfire recording, indiscernible from regular gunfire, would have everyone scattering and allow the driver to escape. People wouldn't have time to process what was happening and would instinctively run away from the car.

The victim plays recorded gunfire, although this would be risky with armed carjackers unless you have a bullet proof car:

Not if they are in a public right-of-way.

It's a fucked-up formality.

In certain states you can use lethal force if they break in your window and try to harm you, but blocking traffic is not considered a crime.

You absolutely should be able to run them over, but technically a pedestrian has the right to stand wherever they want inside a ROW.

So, a pedestrian can legally stand in the middle of a freeway?

Correct.  If they make a move on you in your vehicle in my state, South Carolina, and you fear for your life, it's game on. Just blocking the road, no.

All they can do is tell you to leave for impeding traffic.

Pedestrian traffic laws are very strange.

Highways are a bit off, but if there is a crosswalk they can stand there as long as they want. It isn't a criminal act.

Some countries have laws that give pedestrians the right-of-way no matter what. The second you step foot into the roadway all vehicular traffic must yield to you.

There is a reason all these protests are in public roadways. And there is a reason you don't see anyone being arrested for it.

Actually, standing in a public roadway is considered a nuisance in most states and is illegal: https://www.findlaw.com/legalblogs/criminal-defense/is-it-legal-for-protesters-to-block-traffic/
