It looks retarded.

To signal to other men that they’re also gay. It’s like stomping your foot 3 times in the bathroom stall of the airport men’s room (nh)
-
to cover up their clavicle bone and non existent bird chest
real men have a chest of living muscle tissue and must allow it to breathe and experience life - thus leaving the top bottom alone

I have them because I actually play golf, and the few times I have to go in the office in the summer, I'm not wearing button shirt or tshirt.
Plus, there are very cool ones out there now - check out hylete.com, perfect for office or golf, and they fit well if you exercise.

It's nice to have shirts that breathe a little.

They are awesome, but I never pay that list price.
You get 20% off first order, and shit is always on sale, so can grab for like 40 bucks.
They last years too - no fraying and shit.

great example of why leaving ONE button unbuttoned is the worst approach. Either leave the top two unbuttoned or button them all up.
I don't wear them but polo shirts look great if you're in shape. Form fitting in all the right places

Tennis shirts (lacoste) become polo shirts and then golf shirts.
The original polo shirts were buttoned up and only unbuttoned and collar popped when playing.

Wes, I am wearing a GR navy blue training shirt, and a 10 year old pair of old nike shorts, purchased well before I refused to buy nike anymore.
Standard workday type gear in summer months, zoom call approved.

It finally happened; one of the bars in my walk-in closet failed last night because of the weight of far too many clothes. Now, there are stacks of jeans and kakis still on hangers on the floor of my bedroom.
The main reason I have so many clothes is because I never throw anything out unless it is ripped or stained. I am not a hoarder because I can't stand clutter. Some of my clothes are decades old. Like the suit I had custom made for my son’s wedding in 1988. I have maybe worn it twice since then. It is completely out-of-style. Nobody wears double breasted suits with pleated pants anymore.
The clothes on the floor will stay there until I force myself to go through them and donate the bulk of them to Goodwill. This will be a time-consuming process because I will undoubtably try each item on to aid me in deciding what to keep and what to toss.
There are times when I decide I want to wear a particular item of clothing and then spend a half hour trying to find it because there is so much to search through.
Which do you folks recommend for jeans, hanging them on hangers or folding them and putting them on shelves? I only iron clothes when I absolutely must because ironing is boring.
I will keep all the polo shirts. :)

We went thru my stuff the other day, filled 5 bags of clothes I never wear or wore (some still with tags) and brought it to the local clothes drop-off at the local church.
Feels good to clean house...
If I see homeless looking people running around with Motorhead, Alice Cooper, Black Oak Arkansas and Iron Maiden shirts on, I'll know where they came from.

Folded in a drawer or on a shelf. If you're hanging them and not constantly rotating through jeans or pants, I've found you get a visible hanger line on them that is far worse than just folding them.

Thank you for the encouragement. I had a moment here where I thought I would hang everything back up. If I did that, the likelihood I would follow through on sorting and getting rid of everything I don't need is greatly diminished.

I gladly dress pretty poorly.
Mainly just camo cargo-shorts and those "Starter" shirts or whatever they're called. (The soft-fabric ones).
When dressing up to go out, its "Jeans" for sure.
Despise dressing up, comfort over anything else.. Too old for that gobshite..

I would never disparage anyone for their clothes, because caring about another man's wardrobe is teh ghey.
However, there is some really cool quality shit out there if you're into it. Some of it way overpriced, but some of it is totally justified.

Yeah i'm a cheap ass, but when it comes to clothes i will buy good things.
My thing is dress shoes. Johnston and Murphy.
And Lucky jeans.
When it comes to comfort i'll pay extra.

Some of the stuff they sell is not good but you have to be selective.
The George jeans they sell are rated very good. The George brand is pretty good overall.
The workshoes they sell are good too. You need to look them over and make sure the style fits what you need.
I get my sneakers there. Ozark Trail. They've lasted years.
If you are brand conscious for status then don't shop there. If you have a job where you need to impress then go elsewhere.
I don't give a crap about the brand if it fits my needs.
Bought a $10 knockoff pair of Converse All-Star type sneakers for deadlifting and have used them for years. Real Converse are $50 now and there is nothing to them.

Johnston and Murphy has been my go for dress and dress casual as well. They are great. Oddly, I hate all their clothes.
Used to do lucky jeans at an outlet, but found joe's jeans at an outlet as well. A little more pricey even at the outlet, but as comfortable as sweat pants.

It's all about comfort my dude.
Status doesn't matter.
Most people are too stupid to recognize a legit pair of $300 dress shoes anyway.
Considering how much time i spend outside and traveling to remote areas, i've been very picky about what i wear. More based on how it fits and feels.
Shit, my GF just bought some Converse for $80. Those shoes are cheap as shit to make, it's just marketing because they are "cool".
The Red wing steel toes i wear a few days a week cost me $250. Been wearing them for 7 years. Had them repaired twice and re-soled for free.
-
Oddly, I hate all their clothes.
Me too, but i've probably purchased 15 pairs of dress shoes from them and 4-5 casual shoes.
I have more shoes than my GF. ;D
I'll check out Joe's jeans.
I stop by the TJ Maxx and Marshalls here in town all the time, found legit Lucky jeans for $25 a pair. Could never find the flaw in them. Probably have 4-5 pairs i found this way over the years. Just not very common.

The thing about buying clothes, especially jeans is different brands have different cuts (tailoring). Find a brand that best fits your physique.
I buy a lot of clothes online that I send back because they either aren't the same size as the label indicated or they don't look/fit as they appeared in the add. Someone here mentioned the like Lucky Brand jeans. These are well made jeans. Unfortunately, they look awful on me. I think they are made for people with big butts or wider hips.
Clothes made with stretch fabrics are comfortable. After you wear them for a while or make the mistake of washing them in hot water and drying them on a high temperature they will lose their stretch.
Mass produced clothing is machine cut which can result in variances. If you are fussy about fit and like Levi brand, try them on before you buy them. If you try on 10 pair of the same jean style, you'll find the fit varies a lot from one pair to the next.
I have long arms, long sleeve shirts sized S-M-L-XL. A large's arm length is often too short. Dress shirts labeled by neck size and sleeve length are not a problem.
I find shoes are difficult to buy without trying them on first. I have very wide feet. I couldn't my foot into a Nike if my life depended on it because they are so narrow. The most comfortable sport shoe for me is New Balance.
I hate buying clothes. Trying them on until you find exactly what you want is exhausting.
-

Lucky jeans just fit me better overall. They do seem made for people with bigger butt/legs. I can't wear any other brand of jeans comfortably unless i get a size 2-3" larger. They also have about 10 different styles and they all fit completely different. I've found 3 styles that fit amazing and i can buy them at the correct size. I have to shop in a store in order to find clothes that fit. Long arms, broad shoulders and small waist make it difficult. Dress shirts and slacks are impossible. I have ape arms.
I ended up finding a local tailor that can modify anything for a small fee. Little Vietnamese lady will modify my dress cloths for like $5-10 each. I actually had a bunch of long sleeve dress shirts cut down to be short sleeves. Greatest thing i've ever had done! With my wide shoulders it's hard to find short sleeved button up shirts that fit.
I can't wear Nike's either, my feet are too wide. I'm not a big fan of tennis shoes, but i like Asics.

Foot Joy are my favorite polos for golf right now but Greyson makes some good ones that you can wear out or on the course

Why is anyone referring to these top buttoners as men?

It is true we have lost the theme of the top button. Maybe a quick recap is in order:
Golf shirts are fine in general
Never button the top button
T-shirt showing underneath is horrible
There is a vicious divide slowly bubbling beneath the surface of those who prefer quality over price.
Either this thread will dissolve in a day or so and all will be fine, or the very nature of the fabric that holds this forum together will be torn to shreds.
Like a cheap walmart shirt.

LOL if only.
Nope, regular, normal central NJ.

I used to wear polo, nautica and hilfiger cologne!
Me too. Then it was Aqua Di Gio in high school and now it’s absolutely nothing!
-
Polo cologne smells good.
Drakkar Noir is good too.
I used to really like Aramis.

Did this vile version of Ralph polo shirts ever catch on in the US? It was everywhere here in London 10 years ago.

I avoid clothes with visible labels or company emblems whenever possible. I'm not a billboard. If Ralph wants me to model his clothes, he can pay me to do it. :)

I have a bottle of Grey Flannel that is at least 2 dozen years old and maybe 3/4 full. It's the only cologne I wear. This tells how you seldom that is. Be clean. Take a shower using soap. It is all most dudes need. Well, that and a little deodorant in the arm pits.

Polos are great shirts shorts pants underwear socks etc we have a Polo outlet store near my house

Maybe he was gifted them.
But you can't really call an item of clothing "great" without owning/wearing them.

There's pics of him wearing polo type shirts that have been posted so many times.

Fuck polo shirts....I wear T-shirts,tanks,and sweatshirts.
FUCK POLO SHIRTS AND THE GOOFY FUCKS WHO WEAR THEM !! LOL ;D
No doubt. I don't play fucking polo. I don't even like horses. They're stupid and they smell. I like it when they kick people in the head but it doesn't make me want to be around them.
-

I meant shirts as in formal shirts. The first page has a pic of him in a ralph polo tshirt and I remember seeing shorts.

What percentage of people in polo shirts actually play polo? There's even a little image of a man on a horse swinging a polo stick or mallet or whatever it is. It's right there on the shirt. But you have never played that sport. You've never watched that sport. You don't care about that sport and you're wearing that shirt. Why?
The world has weird people in it. They think they're normal because they're all being weird together. And they'd say I'm weird for asking these questions. Like if I met them at a bbq or something. A bunch of non-polo players in polo shits with a picture of a man playing polo on the shirt would say I'm the weird one.
Anyway, just putting on my wetsuit to go to the grocery store. No idea why people think I'm into scuba diving.

Aspirational Status
Polo is a rich man's sport to this day and ralph was simply applying marketing 101 way back when. Visual emotional signifiers > functionality in many respects in impacting the human brain
You can call it shallow and pathetic from a logical point of view, and you'd be completely right, but at the same time such behaviour is embedded in just about every aspect of the animal kingdom ,peacock feathers, male lion beards colour/size signifying alpha, the list is endless ie external symbols and features signifying mating desirability. In humans, for men $/status is top 3 easy. So in a fucked up way ,it literally goes to the core of the continuation of our species, for better or (likely) worse

Solid analysis of the temporarily embarrassed millionaire larping peasantry obeying not just explicit commands but also aping the ways of their betters. Stockholmed submissives kissing the hand which holds them down. Let them eat tyranny, I say.
Peterson and his serotonin lobsters wouldn't agree with me but I've come to define social status as the thing to which people who can't actually do anything aspire. Which is most people. It's fortunate that capability isn't the sole means by which status is conferred, and that we've got this second pathway by costume, whether physical or ideological. Otherwise all these unremarkable suburban fuckwads would really be up shit creek.

same number of people who wear polar necks go to the ice caps
-
They might just be big time Carl Sagan enthusiasts. They're about the same small percentage as those who still wear turtlenecks so some overlap wouldn't be surprising.
Edit:
I didn't know British people called them arctic necks. It doesn't roll off the tongue. You should adopt the Star Spangled Freedom term, as you so wisely did with Snickers in favour of the improbably named Marathon. Or are we talking about two different things and once again find ourselves separated by a common language?

Here is a little polo shirt history:
The shirt we all know as the polo shirt wasn't even associated with polo. It was created by tennis pro Jean Rene Lacoste. At that time, tennis players would wear a button down shirt and tie. Lacoste decided to come up with a more breathable lightweight shirt with just 3 buttons. Lacoste’s new tennis shirt became our modern day polo shirt.
-
So they stole it. The polo players stole the tennis players shirt.
-
Maybe I can get one with a little plague rat logo.
-

Yup, that's what they did. Those thieving polo players. They are not to be trusted... at least not with your shirt. :)
-
same number of people who wear polar necks go to the ice caps
Is that this also the same number of people who are into bodybuilding but never competed?
-
is competing a requirement of bodybuilding?
no, its one of the downsides
-

It is if playing polo is a requirement of wearing a polo shirt.
