Lifetime smokers lose one decade off their lifespans. But if they quit by age 45, they have the lungs of a non-smoker by age 55, as well as the lifespan projection.
The moral of the story to me is: quit the vices early. For PED's in particular, don't stress your CNS with them at an age where you should be taking protective measures [although I realize I am a hypocrite in this regard, but my cycle was relatively light].
Almost all of Ronnie's injuries came from his post-Olympia stupidity. I feel if he went for the health look at that point, he would have been fine. Ditto for Branch.
But...these guys won't stop. Even if it means taking 20-30+ years off their lifespans potentially.
I heard that steroids permanently change the structure of your heart though. But I'm not sure if that's true. But regardless, surely reducing or quitting PED's would help. But these guys don't seem to want to.
It must suck to have your identity tied up in something so unsustainable as high level bodybuilding.

Absolutely nothing wrong with training, it’s after retiring these guys have to stay huge in their mid to late 40’s. Down size, stay in shape and concentrate on cardio

Lifetime smokers lose one decade off their lifespans. But if they quit by age 45, they have the lungs of a non-smoker by age 55, as well as the lifespan projection.
The moral of the story to me is: quit the vices early. For PED's in particular, don't stress your CNS with them at an age where you should be taking protective measures [although I realize I am a hypocrite in this regard, but my cycle was relatively light].
Almost all of Ronnie's injuries came from his post-Olympia stupidity. I feel if he went for the health look at that point, he would have been fine. Ditto for Branch.
But...these guys won't stop. Even if it means taking 20-30+ years off their lifespans potentially.
I heard that steroids permanently change the structure of your heart though. But I'm not sure if that's true. But regardless, surely reducing or quitting PED's would help. But these guys don't seem to want to.
It must suck to have your identity tied up in something so unsustainable as high level bodybuilding.

They are however, better off to quit, reducing their risk.

He died at the age of 84.

The statement you made is a common one and there is truth in it.
Would you recommend people smoke based on your grandfather's experience?

Genetics or perhaps what is more likely, the strength of your immune system (and you can call that genetics if you like) has a lot to do with your body's ability to neutralize cancer. Some people who have less resistance to cancer will get it by smoking.
Everybody gets cancer cells from time to time in their body but some people's immune systems neutralize them. Some don't. The reason most cancers occur in older people is that the immune system weakens with age.
Good genetics often does not pass through to all descendants equally. Your brother, like your grandfather may not get cancer from smoking but you might.
I suggest you smoke 2-3 packs a day for 50 years to test this theory.
In addition to the toxic chemical pollutants in cigarette smoke there is also radiation which can cause cancer.
There are survivors of the Hiroshima atomic bomb who did not die of cancer but many did.
Would you advise close proximity to atomic bomb blasts based on that?

my father smoked cigarettes and drank alcohol from the time he was 8 years old till he was 50 years old. at 50 he quit cold turkey , he died at 85 of liver cancer. my mom never drank or smoked and lived to be 93 one just never knows.

Apparently not for him. He and Johnnie Jackson are over 50 and still LOVE hitting the iron.
Even guys like Tony "JetMan" Pearson still train and do it well. Pearson won the AAU Masters Mr. Universe in 2020 at age 64.

And don't these health issues have more to do with guys taking drugs to get cut or "dry" vs. their just getting big?
Again, no matter what people like Jackson do, he's going to get criticize. If he stays big (even if he's not quite as large as his competitive prime) "OH, he just can't let it go; he's killing himself". If he shrinks, "Oh, he was all drugs! Why did he waste his life away for nothing?"
