Title: How is the Christmas spirit with you?
Post by: LurkerNoMore on December 11, 2022, 02:38:52 PM
There is always the little bit of dread upfront because I have a lot of decorating to do.  (I have 5 trees at home, my gf 2, my parents - and they always insist on a live one), plus the other decorations around the house(s).  Every year I say I won't do this much again, but I always do.  I have made it a unofficial holiday to put my own stuff up on Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving before helping anyone else.

Now all that is left is the shopping.  (Mostly for me).

How about you guys?

wife does Christmas

She buys all year and always has a wardrobe full of things to make suitable gifts

I just have to get the decorations out of the loft and hang some lights around the gutter

all done the other day

All the interior stuff is up, and the yard was raked yesterday so the inflatables will likely go up in the front yard tomorrow.

Will be a strange one for me. I'm sure I'll have fun - I'll be abroad, but I'm feeling a lot of guilt about being away from my nephews. They're still young and it's their first Christmas without their grandparent. I'd much rather be home with family but I can't manage it this year. Still, putting the tree up earlier was fun and I've compensated by buying decent gifts.

You are lucky.  LOL

I have two 9' trees.  One for my Radko ornaments and the other for the ornaments I bring back from all my travels.  5 years ago, I was at DCOTA and it was after the first of the year and one of the designers had a 15' tall christmas tree on sale there.  It was gorgeous.  Decorated beautifully.   So I am thinking "if I get this one big one, I can get rid of the other two and combine all the ornaments on one."  She explained that due to the height and because they had it on a rotating base stand, there had to be extra supports, counter weights, etc...   I asked her if it came with all that and she yes it came with everything.  When she said everything she meant EVERYTHING.  A few days later when the workers brought it to my house in the delivery van, I didn't think anything and just put it away until Xmas in 10 months.  When I got it out and opened it, it really did have EVERYTHING.  All the ornaments, garland, extra lights, tree skirt, side displays (giant present boxes and 6' tall pair of NutCrackers, luxury Santa chair, etc...

So long story short, I couldn't get rid of all that so it goes on that tree again every year.

The two by my pool are easy to put up though.  Plug them  in and hang matching ornaments.  About an hour.

Sure. It's definitely not the same. I think I'm most annoyed these days with how Christians equate Christmas with Jesus Christ.

It's a carry-over pagan holiday. In the end, it's all about family and whatever makes people happy.

I'm most annoyed with people who purchase products that portray Santa as black.  Like how many people actually think a black man is going to sneak into a house while you sleep and you wake up with more stuff than you had before going to bed?

Christmas just isn't what it was when my wife was still here. She really got into the spirit of the holidays, baking, making candy, planning Christmas dinner, sending out Christmas cards, and doing whatever else needed to be done to make everything great. My focus was decorating the outside of the house, putting up the tree and lights and maybe putting up garland here and there.

We still have a nice Christmas, thanks to my daughter and son-in-law. They have their own Christmas decorating style, so they do most of that. Instead of traditional Christmas trees they put out three artificial birch trees with LED lights built into the branch tips. Their color scheme this year is mostly white, red, metallic gold and silver. There are also some black iron reindeer and trees from Crate and Barrell.

I haven't put lights on the house for decades. I started putting up garland with lights in it on the eves at our previous home and continued with that here. This year there is a large wreath and brough made with real ever-greens and pinecones from 7 Dee's, a local nursery on the front wall leading up to the front door. They are lit by the three porch lights instead of having strands of lights on them. It is all very low key compared to the rest of the houses in the neighborhood that have a gazillion lights everywhere and blow-up Christmas Santa's.

Not sure what the plans are for Christmas dinner this year, but it won't be an elaborate feast like my wife used to make. Since my daughter is mainly a vegetarian, if there is any meat at all, it will be a turkey breast. Pizza is their mainstay food, so maybe we will have a 'Christmas pizza', LOL!

I hope to send out Christmas cards, but I have not started yet. If I do get to them, it will be the first time since my wife passed. Since my son and his family live in Germany we will What's App video chat with them.

Shit no. It'll be over 100 degrees. These stupid Aussies think it feels like Christmas. They eat spikey lobster. Not a turkey in sight.

22...23 Christmases. Never felt it yet.

Will hang with the gf and her family but I've had more than a few alone, here and in the US. Hang tough if you're on your own. It sucks, I know. Put together some damn good feeds for yourself and see social convention for the nonsense that it is.

Actually, it surprises me that most Christmas images and related themes have snow and cold weather in them.  All you got to do is look at the world map and see that the number of places experiencing the "Christmas cold" is not very many.

Look, for all of the religious people out there:
If what you believe in, makes you a good person, then I'm all for it.

I just find it funny that Santa and the Easter Bunny, are rivaling Jesus's most holy holidays, these days.

And yet, they go right along with it!  How many more things can we make up? Parents have no problems telling their children at a certain age, that Santa isn't real.

Things that make you go hmmmmm.....

I'm agnostic. Things are too perfect to happen by chance.

I'd believe in the Matrix/alien overlords, or reincarnation/recycling of souls, rather than organized religion.

In its history, organized religion has schemed, profited, and mind-controlled the weak and the weary.

I would argue that since the dawn of man, at least a billion people have died in the name of a certain "God", due to wars, inquisitions, sacrifices, and suicides.

We all want something to believe in. Smart people, just have not found it yet.

awareness of self is the curse humans carry

We have enough brain capacity to believe we are something more than just flesh and blood but not enough knowledge to work out if its true or not.

Other animals on the planet dont sit around wondering if they are going to heaven or hell

They do fight to stay alive though
Self preservation is all animals strongest trait

Notice that both are white, both reward children with presents if they are good and "believe", and - as you said- both are conveniently the same day as Jesus's holy days - because he couldn't carry a holiday on his own and is a co-star instead.

And we should be ashamed of ourselves that we haven't separated enough from our animal brethren.

I think religious people need to realize that we are classified as mammals for a reason.

Why don't we have our own classification? All of that religion, and we are still mammals.....

And I am supposed to assume that God talks to the Pope.... ::)

People want to be loved and a part of a community. Why is the Hell's Angels, or a fraternity,  any different from organized religion?

They all give people a purpose. None are more important than the other.

How does your wife feel about you staying home with the dog while she's having Christmas dinner with her parents?

My grandkids are in the mid-twenties to early thirties.  Determining what to get them for Christmas is challenging, specially the three of them who live in Germany. I usually send money, that way they can get what they want. The great grandkids are even more challenging. Who knows with little kids like for Christmas. I sure don't.

One year following Christmas my 25-year-old grandson sent me a photo of himself standing next to his "new" motorcycle thanking me for getting that for him. He's got quite the sense of humor since it is next to impossible to buy a motorcycle for €50. Another year he sent a photo of the tattoo he got. LOL!

Last year, I went to Costco and bought gift cards to places like restaurants and hotels/inns at the coast. In the years before COVID closed them, I'd get Regal Cinema tickets.

It used to be prime rib at our house before my wife passed. If we had it now, I would be the only person eating it since red meat or any meat "on the bone" is verboten with my daughter and family. Hmm, maybe I could order a French Dip for Christmas from a local restaurant. LOL! Safeway has prime rib at $24.99 lb. about $156 for a 5 - 7 lb. roast.

"These days", Santa is the jolly man in red who brings toys to good girls and boys on Christmas Eve, but his story stretches all the way back to the 3rd century, when Saint Nicholas walked the earth and became the patron saint of children.

Many of the Christmas related events we have in the U.S. began in Germany. For example, the Christmas tree and hung stockings. Over time Americans modified them.

I know about Saint Nicholas. That's my point. He was a real guy, who has turned into a legend that lives in the north pole, that drives a fleet of reindeer that fly, and has a workshop of elves. If they can take a normal man, like Saint Nick, and turn him into Santa Clause, the whole "water into wine" stuff, starts making more sense.

It's a shame people believe in shit like parting the Red Sea, or Noah's Ark. People actually believe that shit.

I have a 6" tree that I pull out of a box and plug in - LEDs - thats my tree

I know about Saint Nicholas. That's my point. He was a real guy, who has turned into a legend that lives in the north pole, that drives a fleet of reindeer that fly, and has a workshop of elves. If they can take a normal man, like Saint Nick, and turn him into Santa Clause, the whole "water into wine" stuff, starts making more sense.

It's a shame people believe in shit like parting the Red Sea, or Noah's Ark. People actually believe that shit.

You make a good point here, with which I agree. Many people worldwide believe both the Old and New Testaments in the Bible are Gospel meaning a collection of infallible truths.

The folklore in the Old and New Testaments have been told orally and in written form for millenniums. First in Hebrew, then Greek and later in other languages. Who knows what was 'lost in translation'. Both written and more-so oral communications change because much of what is conveyed is someone's interpretation and is frequently embellished. Think of it as being like the telephone game, only this has been played over thousands of years and multitudes of people.

"Gospel" means "good news".  The Gospel of Jesus of Nazareth is considered to be the completion of the Promise of God in the Old Testament.

It is not as though attempts to change and/or add too, the Gospel and the New Testament of Jesus of Nazareth have not been made because men being men, will seek to control others and not for the better.  Look no further than to the Catholic Church and their man-influenced false doctrine, e.g., the eternal virginity of Mary the mother of Jesus of Nazareth.  The same holds true for the so-called "Latter Day Saints", i.e., Mormons, i.e. MORONS.  Joseph Smith was a fucking pervert bent on having sex with as many women as he could.

The message of the Nazarene is simple but as is often the case, many among mankind loathe that which is good and gravitates to the vile.  It is as my own mother taught me, her words, decades old, still ring true:  Mankind desires immortality but settles for immorality.

Don't believe me?  Just look around you.  Or in a mirror.

Right. Gospel does mean good news. It also mean the truth and a fact. Outside of its application to religion, the word gospel is also used to describe an idea or rule that's accepted as undoubtedly true.

And now I turn my attention to the Pope....

He is needed, to keep the masses in check.

Is he the right hand man to God? Give me a fucking break.

The Pope has as much access to "God" as we all do.

The Christmas Carols started in October...That is too soon.

There was a chain of full service department stores in Houston called "Foley's"  They used to set up the "Christmas Decoration Department" in July. It sometimes takes this long for institutions to get ready, but the carols and promotions starting  in October is too much, man.

Agreed. When Christmas goes on 6 months out of a year, it is meaningless. Lights on houses in my neighborhood up and on the day after Halloween until Easter. The commercialization of every holiday has all but ruined them for me.
