For everyone under 25 reading this, there's something you gotta understand about how powerful this debut was at that time (2002). Just barely a year removed from the events of 9/11, at a time when New Yorkers (and the country) were still very much looking up in fear, to look up that night at the beautiful artistry and raw power of a new powerhouse rock band was uplifting beyond explanation.

- Were any getbiggers there that night? 1MR?
- Does everyone (except funk51) agree?

He was excellent yes.
But he's no Ronnie James Dio, thats for sure...

I think there's room for both of them lol.

Cornell's voice is insane.

Dio was a beast.

Watch the first three minutes of  this old dude kill Last in Line

I was just watching that video a few weeks ago. Love Soundgarden. A lot of Cornell's solo stuff was good, too.

Not the best song but it really shows his range. Crazy.

Dont get me wrong, Cornell is an amazing talent... Used to cover "Fell on Black Days" in our old band back in the mid-90's...
Fun stuff.

Hot Damn! What a coincidence!

I was just saying this to friend  yesterday.

Loved his part in Alice in chains Right Turn.

Guys voice was raw, powerful,  soulful,  energetic.  Given his consistency and longevity of quality he was the best of the grunge vocalists. And thats including Staley, Vedder, Weiland,  all the PNW bands and many before and since.

I was stuck inside yesterday (cold or flu or some shit) and jammed out all day to the music of my prime. (80's & 90's music) Cornell was among the best of the best.

I was not there, but what I can tell you is that I have seen Chris Cornell perform in person and he was incredibly talented. Don't know about him looking better than anyone else in Rock, but he had a powerful voice.

I saw him perform live back in 1991 in Los Angeles at an event they used to call the Foundations Forum and back then he was in what I would call a "super band" called Temple of the Dog. You had numerous artists from some of the top bands (Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden) in Seattle come together to form this group (they only put out 1 album). The song that really floored me by way of Cornell's vocal range is called Hunger Strike. From that point on, I knew the guy was a beast of a vocalist.

Not to gay it up, but if I had to pick a guy that was likely one of the better looking guys in Rock (who could probably land tons of pussy and/or cock - pick your poison), I'd lean on cue Grape Ape Michael Hutchence, given that he had a certain mature look that women of all ages like.

My favorite vocalist was Scott Weiland (prior to him stopping his Heroin use). After he stopped using Heroin, his voice changed drastically. In his prime (below performing acoustic Plush) he had a powerful voice.

It’s very hard for me to pick my favorite vocalist from the grunge era because they were all great and had a unique voice. I guess I overplayed Nirvana in elementary school days because I never listen to them anymore (other than the Man Who Sold the World), but instead it’s STP, Alice In Chains and a little bit of Pearl Jam. The MTV Unplugged performances of this era also ruled

Thanks man. Good stuff. Lucky you.

I fucking love Hutchence & Weiland too.
INXS have a good 10+ epic tracks. Their greatest hits album + George Michael's Ladies & Gentlemen album was pretty much all I'd listen to in the shower/bathroom several years ago every day/night.

I love this.. especially the guitar.

A couple years back,
I asked my ex if she found Hutchence hot.. she said "nah".
I told her I have a man-crush on Cornell.. she said "o....k".

I saw all of them in concert. Like I mentioned: those were my prime years...

I saw pearl Jam twice....one of which was probably one of the best live performances ive ever seen.

I saw STP at the Pontiac Silverdome. That was awesome. I remember it was a toned down show. Alot of acoustic stuff. Everything was kinda performed the same way they did the Dancing Days Zeppelin cover.q

Porno for Pyros was the absolute best show. Perry Farrell really knew how to connect with the audience.  Saw him at St. Andrews Hall in Downtown Detroit.  After the show he sat on a 2nd or 3rd story window, legs hanging over outside, and played his guitar and sang as the crowd let out. That was tits.

Saw Alice in Chains open up for Kiss at Tiger Stadium!!! It was so loud I couldn't really hear them but Layne didn't look or sound too healthy from what I remember.

OMR, I love Temple of the Dog. For me, my favorite song on that album and one that really shows off Cornells vocals is FOUR WALLED WORLD. fucking great song.

Yeah I listened to a lot of Nirvana too at one stage.
Pearl Jam's track "Black" is epic. That song kills me.
Here we go. Eddie was on fire here. Last 2 minutes.... fuck.

Knowing that the PNW was the birth of Grunge is one of the few redeeming qualities of living here now. Though not many bands came out of Portland.   Although I did see the lead singer of a pretty well known Portland band picking up a hooker on Sandy Blvd and go into a jack shack together.

NoPeds best PJ song ever? I was always a huge fan of Deep..  but so many to choose from always loved Rats and Glorified G, corduroy was a favorite too.

Their debut album was ridiculous for a first album.  Came out swinging with Once and never slowed down.

Vs was cool too.

I don't remember Rats, Glorified G and corduroy off the top of my head (though I probably have them and was playing them the other night while working out..)
I'll youtube them tomorrow, when I'm awake.
Thanks.

Spandex shorts so bodybuilding related. Definitely a unique voice like a more polished Axl Rose. It appears that the lead cummed hard in the first 40 seconds or so.

My favorite Queensryche is their 1st 4-song demo. Amazing, raw, heavy...

Goofy 80's video, but what a song...

So many greats, Eric Adams from Manowar (dude's 72 and still has the pipes) John Cyrus from Agent Steel, etc...

Agent Steel

Maynard James Keenan also has a wide vocal range. Starts off slow and takes over 10 minutes to get to the heavier side.

Great voice and a great front man.  Only saw him live once with Soundgarden, it was a great show. A pal of mine is a big fan and had seen him live as in his various projects over the years, also flew from the UK to LA for the tribute concert they put on after his death. He'd also watched him from side of stage and interviewed him a number of times in his previous life as a music journalist and said he always came across as a great guy.

Best voice of the grunge era IMO. Always liked STP and Alice in Chains but Pearl Jam sucked to my ears. Strangely enough I like Eddie Vedder's solo stuff and Temple of the Dog
