Yep...

3 of us are working from home full-time here.
In summer w/ pool, it goes up to 600.00 a month...

Whackiness...

I always get my threatening email telling me how bad I am, and neighbors are "good"  ::)

People in the middle wiill be taken down to poor

No it isn't....you honks can install some solar panels but its easy to just be more conservative with things.  Change your bulbs to L.E.D's, don't leave lights on that you're not using,  get one of those temp regulators for your home....etc.

Otherwise, you can always move in a mobile home and away from the lib cities out in the country like I did and escape the matrix.  My E-home is quite efficient, power is dirt cheap in Piedmont along with everything else.   The choice is yours

It isn’t crazy increases down here like Europe.

Winter. Aircon going all day. Lights on all day. TVs going. Big house. US850 for that Qtr. Dirt cheap as I was expecting double.

I will point out the temp you set for aircon is critical. In Winter I believe we use 23.5 and in Summer we use 22.5 (degrees). makes a massive difference to energy consumption whereas if you cranked Winter to 27-28 it’ll use twice as much power.

Yes.  Happening here too; my neighbor and I were talking about it a couple months ago.  Electric bill seems to have doubled but I know I haven’t been doing anything different.  I looked into solar… twice.  The out of pocket expense was so huge you’d never recover it so I passed.

Yeah solar is a crock of shit.

Ads on TV and online keep saying you can have solar installed with no expense out of pocket.  Wrong.  And it’s not just my experience. Virtually no one in my neighborhood has it for this very reason.  I have one friend in Fort Lauderdale who is having it installed in part because he is getting a new roof. And his out of pocket cost is huge.

I had a new roof put on one of my rental homes a couple years ago and adding solar was not cost effective.  I asked about it for my primary residence twice and again it was not cost effective.  Yes, it takes about 20-30 years to recover the cost. Pass.  I expect to be dead in 30 years.

A buddy of mine had a new home built in Northern California and he was able to have solar integrated from the get go.  He said the cost was only reasonable because it was part of the new construction.

Solar makes sense depending where you live. In Maui I had 20k worth of panels and batteries and equipment. I generated and excess amount of electricity and actually sold back about a hundred a month to the power company. I was told there was enough to power an electric car in addition to the house that is what prevcious owners intended but I did not have an electric car. When I moved I got a check for over 500 from the power company. But it was also Sunny 350 days a year where I lived. Now my bill is about 500 a month which sucks.

The cost of those systems are coming way down and along with the tax credits its a good deal....and a lot of people are not only getting enough panels for their house but also to charge up their cars as well.   So I think the investment paying off in 20-30 just isn't true.  On a 30k system, if you are saving about 800 a month on your house and car then in about 3 years you've paid off your panels

Inlaws arent saving 800.00 a month. They're bill isnt even 100.00 a month. They base it off your last 5-years (or so) usage and costs.
They use very little, and it would take them forever to see any return...

Yes, years ago it was not a good investment but not today.  The cost for the systems have gone way down.   I'm not saying everyone should.  If you're like joswift and live in the UK, then hell no.   I live in South Carolina and we get a ton of sun throughout the year so it would work.

We don't have a power issue here to be honest like California.  We have Duke Energy in North and South Carolina which runs on coal and nuclear energy.  There are 6 Nuclear Plants and about 35 coal fire plants but those are going to be shut down soon but power relatively is pretty cheap here

I have two rental houses in the desert region of Southern New Mexico. Full sun 300+ days a year.

State of the art everything, i have been building solar array sites for 3 years, i have all the supplier hookups.

On average, my savings per month is around $13 for my solar systems, per house.

Like i've said many times, it makes sense if you don't have air conditioning or high-powered appliances.

For the average person it is not worth the money.

I travel a lot so my home in the mountains only gets used 3-4 days a week and my electric bill was triple what is usually is.

They just raised natural gas prices in my area too.

The average American is getting bled out by design.

And it's going to get much much worse.

Some facts about solar

The cost of our solar system was about $90,000. They take the tax credit, and knock it down to about 60k

Financed at 3% interest for 25 years. The monthly payment is $301

The solar system sells back electricity to the electric company. This brings our Bill down from about $475-$500 to the minimum hook up fee which is $45 per month. Combined with solar system payment it is under $350

Our monthly savings is a little over $100 per month today.

Entire system is fully warrantied to perform as intended and also against any damage or breakdowns for the entire 25 years.

So we have basically “fixed“ our electric cost per month for the next 25 years. That means every time the power bill goes up, our cost stays essentially the same for the next 2 1/2 decades. Within five years our monthly savings will probably exceed $200 per month.

Although we are paying for our system, it is still essentially no money out of pocket.

Caveat is, you need to live in an area where the utility provider does net metering. This means they are dealing with the same price they sell it to you. If you live in one of those areas, it is likely Solar would be of great benefit to you. If not, that changes things dramatically.
