He was choked out by Hulk Hogan
He almost died and sued Hogan and McMahon for Millions, but got around 400.000 USD
"He came very close to killing me," Belzer told broadcaster Roy Firestone in 1990. "I was told by a sports medicine expert that if I had fallen a few inches either way I could have been crippled for life, I could have been dead."

And Mr T clearly approved of the choke hold.
Belzer probably treated Mr T and Hulk Hogan very poorly prior to the show.

He sued, Hogan, Vince McMahon and even MR T for millions, but got 400k USD which he used to buy a house in France

He could be funny, and he did great work on that cop show.
May he rest in peace.

I liked Belzer, so I can fill in some of the tidbits.
Mr T and Hogan were being worked really hard leading up to Wrestlemania 1, they wanted time off or just a break, but the WWF made them go on Belzer's show. They told Mr T and Hogan there would be handicapped kids there, etc...., so they do it, but weren't happy.
They get there, and I guess it was a regular show with no kids, etc.... But they still go on because the WWE wants them to. Belzer's schtick is that he's an investigative/conspiracy reporter/comedian, so he starts asking them about wrestling being fake. This wasn't too far from when Dr. D smacked John Stossel, so it was a popular issue.
So while this interview was happening, Hogan decided he's going to work Belzer over a bit, and tells Mr T. In one version of the show, you could see Hogan whisper to Mr T, and they smile and giggle. Hogan gets him in that front face lock/neck crank, which was supposedly his go to move when he wanted to fuck with people. But he doesn't know Belzer was going to go out that fast, or that the floor was concrete below.
Belzer cracked his skull, and needed 8-10 stiches, plus some other stuff. He sues Mr T, Hogan, and the WWE. It goes on for awhile, and they decide to settle, split 3 ways - Mr T, Hogan, and Vince/WWF. They slap each other with non-talk stipulations.
Belzer wanted $5 million, they settled for between $250 - 400,000 (300,000 is the most common number mentioned). Belzer buys an estate in France, which he named Chez Hogan as a joke, with his wife Harlee McBride -(https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2016/05/12/16/34165E4400000578-0-image-a-40_1463065339287.jpg ) .
And it goes down in Wrestling lore.
-----------------------------
As I mentioned, I liked Belzer. He was an old school liberal, but he'd call out left bullshit as well, and he was apparently nice to any fans, crew, etc... that he'd deal with.
I do wonder if he killed himself / had euthanasia service, because it was whispered in comedy circles that he was pretty sick, and he didn't look so good recently - https://twitter.com/billscheft/status/1627417309366067204 .
Guy had a tough life. Father and brother killed themselves, he had testicle cancer that left him with 1 ball in the 80's, and got dropped on his head by Hogan.
RIP.
-
He was good on law and order svu.
-
"Long time standup comedian." Dude hadn't done done standup since the 80's.

Damn, Hogan could have easily snapped his neck. Jews really getting worked over by wrestlers. First Stossel and then Belzer :o

.
Full episode, between 17 - 19 minutes in, is the meat where you can see it go from annoyed, but playful to "we screwed up".
Before that you can see Mr T seemed really annoyed by the whole thing, Hulk is Hulk. After they come back from commercial (20:45 ish), Hulk and T try to spin it, and you can see Hulk have to calm Mr T down from talking too much.

GREAT ON HOWARD STERN...
-
He was kinda mocking them and there's no way Hogan thought he'd teach him a lesson. Mr T is intense you could see Hogan sigh and roll his eyes a couple of times ;D
-
Also, just because it's funny. In "No Holds Barred" , this character was supposedly done up to look like Belzer as a joke -
.
-
Very much into conspiracy.
Believes moon is fake. Says it is an alien spaceship/space station.
Before you laugh, there is a whole Ancient Aliens episode about it.
So he is not the only one thinking this. :-X

"Long time standup comedian." Dude hadn't done done standup since the 80's.
They meant "long time ago."

But did he do "what he loved?"

He was best known for being on Law and Order SVU.
He played the snarky, smartass, and know it all detective.
-
And Homicide: Life on the Street.
-
And Homicide: Life on the Street.
He first played Munch on Homicide, then played him in Law and Order - same character for over 20 years. Damn good run.
-
And played that character on an episode of The X-Files.
Detective Munch.

Belzer’s final words regarding the Hogan incident: “It was a work.” *last breath*
