I am not Catholic, but my late wife was. I almost always eat fish on Fridays. Not that she did, but when I do, I joyfully reminisce about these good times. When we first met, it was at the start of Lent. She went to mass every morning before work. She kept a rosary in her purse.

I ate a lot of fish when I was very young. My mom and I lived on Nantucket Island where fish was cheap at the time. She didn't have a lot of money so this was our mainstay diet. According to my mom, I also crawled around on the beach picking up and eating cigarette butts... Yuck! In my defense I was still an infant when this happened.

Eating fish frys, I don’t abstain from meat eating on Friday’s however. Nothing in the Bible says this, it’s more of a tradition.

Today is Fat Tuesday. Wife and I went to lunch. Tomorrow 9am Ash Wednesday Mass, Confession and fast. Fridays stations of the cross. Fish Friday has been fish Friday for a few years now so no big deal. Usual Saturday 5pm Mass or 8am Sunday depending on when my wife or both of us are scheduled

Forgive me, Im not a religious person. Does Lent mean you only have to eat fish?

What other holiday requires you to fast?

Not poking fun at any religious beliefs, just think they are mired  in the past.

If you are truly religious, then only God can judge you. Not a tablet  or pieces  of papyrus..

Live a good life, and God will judge you honestly.

You’re just not supposed to eat meat on Friday during Lent, I can’t find it bonded to any religious meaning other than giving up something, supposedly it came about to help out fish markets at the time.

40 years in the wilderness.  And people actually believe that shit.

Noah's Ark was believable to.

Look, Jesus didn't exist he wasn't crucified.

It was made up to keep the majority of people, passified.

Just take a look at the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus. It s 1,000's of years of indoctrination.

Good well thought out takes.

You know Jesus started his ministry while he was essentially homeless, you at least have a BMW, that would seem like a significant advantage. Plus you claim to be a king.

I’m excited to see how easily you become a household name over the next 2000 years

Tomorrow I'll go get ashes, come home and give them to my wife via the reverse titty fuck.

Seafood only on Fridays.

No more desert til Easter Sunday.

*I was going to give up edibles.  Then I said to myself, "let's not get carried away!"

I committed to my mother that I would listen to Father Mikes “Bible in a Year” podcast. I was pretty devote as a youngster (spent summers at St.Anthony’s seminary in fact, as I thought I had a calling) then found the P and went deep into a life of debauchery. I am agnostic now, but I have to admit that I have enjoyed the BiaY podcast. Mike seems like a legit dude. All in all, I do believe that religion helps many people navigate life. I am open to a “creator/creative force” I just do not believe that the Bible is the definitive full word of god. Far too many gospels and books were simply left out as they didn’t fit the papal narrative. My mother is still devote and attends mass each day. I’m sure she is praying and squeezing beads for my “return” 🙂

You’re kinda preaching  your beliefs here Wes.

Side note is your issue with the Bible due to inaccuracies recorded compared to your real life experiences? There is not many alive who remember spending 40 years in the desert with Moses.

You could definitely say that Dave,in fact you did  :D....what I meant was that I don`t preach it to try to convert others to believe in God or to force my beliefs on others.

"Catechism"...Still send shivers down my back.  I had to go through it a few times because I was slow and sometimes I thought it was also because of my being Cashew.  The Mother Superior was very good to me when I finally was sent in to see her and I finally made it!

However I still can't recite the "Apostles Creed".

Prior to having our marriage blessed at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Los Angeles, I attended catechism. I don't remember much about the instruction except that one does not question the word of God and I had a lot of questions. Accepting beliefs on faith alone was not something I was accustomed to, nor could I easily accept. Fortunately, the Paulist Father blessed the marriage. Most of the time when my wife attended mass on Sunday’s I went with her although I never converted to Catholicism.

And I still can't recall "The Apostle's Creed".   ;D  But God cares not for rote, holy or rolly.   ;)  How do I, an Atheist know this?  The Nazarene spoke on it.  Most denominations (and all mooslimes) ignore His truths.

One of the times I was in Catechism they asked each of the kids what they would give up for Lent.  I replied "Indulgences".

A pretty large nun there took me aside...She did not whack me with a ruler but she did ask how I knew about that practice and I told her my  mother taught me, which was true.

Square business right here.....when I was in Catholic school some  kid did something wrong and the nun stapled his shirt/arms to a cork type bulletin board in the front of the classroom and made him stay there for hours.
