Title: Michael Mann is making a Heat 2 movie.
Post by: Wiggs on April 11, 2023, 08:24:16 PM
I happened to be watching Heat this evening, saw it in passing for free on YouTube and was looking something up about the movie and came across this. I'm definitely in....Unless they make it woke...

https://ew.com/movies/michael-mann-really-is-making-heat-2-movie/

If the action is the juice for you, then we've got good news: Heat 2 is in the early stages of development as a movie
EW has confirmed that director Michael Mann, who co-wrote Heat 2 as a novel with Meg Gardiner last year, is in negotiations with Warner Bros. to film the prequel/sequel to his 1995 crime cinema classic Heat. Deadline first reported the news.

Rumors have been swirling around the potential movie for a few weeks now, and Deadline reports that Mann has been in talks with Adam Driver (the star of Mann's upcoming film Ferrari) to star as Neil McCauley, a younger version of Robert De Niro's character from the original Heat. A source familiar with the project, however, told EW the Driver detail was not accurate. Representatives for Driver and Mann didn't immediately respond to EW's request for comment.

At a Tribeca Film Festival screening of the new 4K restoration of Heat last summer (where attendees were given advance copies of Heat 2), Pacino suggested that Timothee Chalamet could play a younger version of his character. Alas, there's been no news on that front yet.

McCauley, Chris Shiherlis (originally played by Val Kilmer), and Vincent Hanna (originated by Al Pacino) in the years leading up to the L.A. crime saga, and chronicles what happens to the surviving characters in the years after. It was one of EW's favorite books of 2022, and feels cinematic even on the page.

Heat is free on YouTube? That surprises me very much. That's good.

Wiggs - did you watch Manhunter? Is was the prequel to Silence of the Lambs that was later remade as Red Dragon. I personally prefer it to Red Dragon.

It was Michael Mann movie.

The Insider, starring Russell Crowe and Al Pacino, was also a good Michael Mann movie.

He has a really unique style.

This sounds very cool.  I'd like to see someone other than Adam Driver play McCauley though.  I don't think that is very good casting.

One of the best scenes in movie history in terms of the dramaturgical structure.

The driver of the get-away car eventually became the actor in the commercials for All State Insurance

I saw the movie in the theater when it came out. People cheered when he threw the scumbag restaurant manager on the kitchen floor.

I read the novel last year, it was good but not great. Everything falls into place a little too well in the novel, and you can see things repeated if you're a Michael Mann fan. Like there is a robbery crew in Heat 2 with a proto Waingro character (Miami Vice fans will note the similarity to the ring leader in the Miami Vice "The Home Invaders" episode also ;) ).

There are also scenes in this prequel that are just reworked from Heat, etc....

I'll watch it, but my hopes aren't too high yet.

-----------

P.S. For those that never saw it, someone put up the fancy Criterion version of Mann's "Thief". It's my favorite film of his, and depending on the day, it could be my favorite film totally -

.

If it sounds interesting, watch it quick, as they'll probably pull it.

Read the book over the summer.

I gotta be honest, I think it's a bad idea.

Heat was one of the best movies ever.  If you wear a good set of headphones and watch the shootout scene it’s arguable that it is the pinnacle and best of all time for shoot outs.

This is dumb. Heat isn't a movie a sequel would work with. Hollyweird is running out of ideas. And now people are finally getting sick of Marvel movies. They aren't the guaranteed cash cows they once were

Was just about to post this.  How about a goddamn original movie for once?  Instead we get nothing but remakes, sequels, and comic book movies.

Probably his best, very underrated movie.

Blatant money grab attempt capitalising on HEAT as a name/reputation. I haven't seen this much reaching since Basic Instinct 2. What a fucking let down.

Probably won't be same-sex relationships except possibly some stripper lady that's in love with another woman that's kinda straight edge and trying to help her stripper partner get out of the lifestyle. Main characters will be macho but plenty of black characters involved that will be the heroes of the story.

Probably some Jew, somewhere that's a virtuous 'advisor' and 'mage' of some sorts - maybe a police captain with a Jewish name. Definitely not on the criminal side.

I hope, in the spirit of representation, this new Heat crime gang is made up entirely of gender non-binary POC.

I loved Mann's films. Heat, Manhunter, Thief etc...

But Heat 2? Ha! What's the story line? Detective Hannah gets indicited for murder after downtown shootout sparks nationwide protests?

In the book it's based on, in the prequel part, the crew is basically the same, with a few more Mexicans. They're taking down scores (the big one being a cartel robbery), being chased by the Waingro-esque character, who in turn is being chased by Hanna (Pacino), and later McCauley(DeNiro).

The post Heat part of the book is where it could really go bad. Chris (Val Kilmer's character in the original) escapes to Latin America to work as security for a local Chinese crime boss. It's got some women's empowerment stuff, and some gay stuff in that part of the book.

Edit - Also in the second part of the book, Hanna is still alive, and chasing Chris and new Waingro.

It's messy, and as I mentioned, everything falls into place a little too well.

I am more excited about the Tarantino version of First Blood. He wants to make it more similar to the novel.

The novel is absolute carnage. Would be very successful today and Tarantino knows it.

Tarantino's final film will be called "The movie critic", they start shooting this fall. After that, he's done.

I think that's more of a marketing thing. If you're good at something and you enjoy it, you never stop doing it.

I think with him it's different, he comes across as a guy who's very concerned about getting out on top of his game, without ruining his legacy with mediocre late works (as many others have).

He's about 50% rate of making great films. Some of the later ones are a bit woke...or at least too kiss ass for who runs Hollywood for my tastes. No way is he stopping unless he switches to writing only.

One of the things that sucks about getting older is seeing stuff you liked rebooted and repackaged into crap that half misses the point.

I have not watched a comic book movie since the 90s.

Utter garbage and now they are overdone.
