"The simplest explanation is that collectively our Chicago stores have not been profitable since we opened the first one nearly 17 years ago – these stores lose tens of millions of dollars a year, and their annual losses nearly doubled in just the last five years. The remaining four Chicago stores continue to face the same business difficulties, but we think this decision gives us the best chance to help keep them open and serving the community."

It didn't happen nearly as much in 1990 either, but diversity is our greatest strength.
What I'm curious about is why Wal-Mart sustained losses at that level since 2006. Seems strange to me.

It's Biden's fault.

They know the new “Leadership “ in Chicago is vehemently anti-business. Why hang around and be a whipping boy for Leftist organizations?

I'm glad that Kwon posted a video featuring Thomas Sowell - he has spoken extensively about how businesses leave Black areas, and how racism is blamed for it after the fact [and is blamed even while they are operating].

I would agree that Chicago's insane current government is in large part to blame.
From what my friend told me, Chicago is a massive city. I'm assuming these store closures are all in the city's south side.

You have to incentivize businesses to operate in bad areas, low taxes and regulation. The Democrat approach is the exact opposite.
Then, they say “Why are you leaving?” when businesses decide to cut bait.

Great post.
As if Wal-Mart wasn't taking big enough losses in that area, you have the extreme anti-business climate by the city's "leadership".
What did they think would happen?

They should make CSWOL a store manager at one of these stores.

One up north, one out west, two down south. The only one in a bad neighborhood I’d say is kenwood, maybe Chatham too.
I’ll say the Little Village was a smaller Walmart with limited selection and was in an out-of-the-way location. I was always surprised it was still around. Either way, there’s plenty of discount stores in those neighborhoods so I don’t think it’ll be a big loss to the community

I’ve only been to Chicago once and I stayed by the magnificent mile or whatever it’s called so my view on why they’d be gone is skewed because there wasn’t one near me. That said, everybody talked about how many places closed during covid because of the strict mandates brought on by the mayor. Most just never came back. I saw a lot of empty places.

Or do work for the City, so you benefit from the fleecing of the tax base.
Like we always say, "it's like Monopoly, we are just playing with other people's money."

Two on the South side, one on the North, and one on the West.
