Title: 155,000 Canadian Government Workers Ready to Strike.
Post by: Matt on April 13, 2023, 11:41:19 AM
I wonder if this will finally be the end of the era of ridiculous government waste, where it is made clear that this level of spending is NOT sustainable.

If these overpaid government workers can't get money from a far-left communist like Justin Trudeau, how can they possibly get what they are looking for from any other politician?

At the 19 minute mark, he says that the immigration process may be delayed by strike action. Oh...oh my God...

Remember: these people ALL wanted to sit around and do nothing while collecting checks during Covid...and now they are wondering why inflation is out of control?  ::)

LOL

For the last two years these workers all "worked from home" or were off on "stress leave".

Now they want a 30% raise?

Thanks!

Don't get me started with education in Canada.

Here all of the teachers make $100,000 + per year and work 25 hours a week 9 months a year.

Yet 40% of teachers are off on "stress leave" because they feel they're overworked and underpaid.

You should be as worried about what they are teaching.

The strike is a go:

One of the comments says that the government workers refused a 9% increase from their government bosses.

Now the government goes on strike to protest the government.

Teachers do a lot of work outside of school hours. Mostly lesson planing, marking/grading, reports etc.

They usually end up having to "work" evenings and maybe half a day over the weekend just to get everything done, so maybe work a 50 to 60 hour week.

Don't get why they complain though as they basically get their time back through those extended holidays. It pretty much evens out.

Matt, one of the things I felt would be vital this decade was unions.

Unions pushing for higher wages float the entire market as people who do not get rises migrate to those that do. Unions generally being labour intensive work which is exactly where our greatest strains are currently felt.

Many middle class paying jobs that are white collar high stress will begin to look pointless when you can have fixed hours, low stress, low skilled manual job paying the same or close to it.

When people ask the question ‘where are all these workers going to come from?’, they’ll come from white collar because the salaries aren’t worth the stress and hours.

Thoughts?

I don't know of any other low pay workers who have such a high opinion of themselves. Education is one of the easiest degree programs to pass in college as well and these people all think they are "highly educated." ::)

Regarding unions, the complete lack of action by unions on behalf of vaccine mandates really disappointed me. They had a good opportunity to stand up to government overreach and support the actual rights of their workers, and failed miserably. That was very disappointing to me.

My other issue with unions is that they are almost all in the government sector now. Something like 87% of unionized workers in Canada work for the government. This is completely inconsistent with the philosophy that unions are premised on: unions were SUPPOSED to be enforced by governments to protect workers from their private bourgeoisie exploitative bosses.

Now the government is protecting workers from...the government?  ???

That's utterly redundant.

But unions started figuring out that corporations and other private businesses will just outsource their labour needs to China to skirt the burdensome wage requirements. Union bosses, who are mainly leftists, don't grasp how economics work - when something costs more, people buy LESS of it.

Labour is no exception - and union bosses and unionized workers are no exceptions. They moan about capitalist exploitation, when their home is FILLED with electronics and other goods made in China or elsewhere, where workers are paid near slave wages. This fact alone proves why unions don't work - nobody tolerates higher prices. Giant corporations are no exception. And increased costs always get passed down to consumers. And we are ALL consumers.

That's why economists focus on consumers rather than workers - both unions, and increases in minimum wage, make everything cost more.

While unions help their members, they also make everything cost more. So while I understand that unions originally emerged as a way to push back against the exploitative potential of the free market - I believe that today, they have become a net negative force in the economy, rather than a net positive.

Discuss.

They may think that, but blue collar jobs aren’t easy. Not sure if that’s what you’re talking about or not. There's a learning curve to it all, and without any prep or skills, it’s going to be a long time before they catch up to where they need to be.

Quality meme, Matt.

Lol @ a bunch of middle aged office workers pushing the barrow on site for minumum wage. They wouldn't last until lunch.

You're not just going to walk in to a tradesman's earnings when you're nothing but a liability.

They are!

Last week in school my boys were taught about all of the different types of "genders".

They told me that what they were taught was STUPID.

I AGREED with them.

That poll is total nonsense.

Nobody is supporting this strike.

I get they want more money (who doesn't).

But they want the "RIGHT TO WORK FROM HOME".   ::)

Also, there's 150,000 government workers on strike yet it hasn't affected me ONE BIT.

Most of them should be unemployed. We’ve just undergone a massive tech revolution yet Public Education hasn’t improved a bit. Obviously, the system is very inefficient and in a true free market system would be completely overhauled.

Great point!

Why pay a teacher $100,000 per year to teach 20 kids in person when thousands can be taught online all at the same time instead.

They did it during covid and most office workers are now at home and WFH is the new pay rise.

The education system here is total shit and kids are failing so bad it’s why the answers for exams started being introduced before the exams. Too much useless information being forced on kids that they can’t do maths, spell or know correct grammar.

Digital learning is 100% better than classroom learning today. We can see the tasks to be done, kids can repeat info, faster etc. The down side would be a socialising so perhaps 3 days teaching at home then 2 days coming to school for sport and socialising.

I don’t even buy the socializing argument. It’s been socialized fine without being trapped in a government school. There would be a lot less bullying as well.
