Don't squat heavy and you'll be fine.

He would have been fine w/ the correct setup as well... Total fail by this goofball...
-
Obviously the blame lies with the dead guy, but it was the spotter that trapped him in that position. 100% that guy doesn't die if that spotter wasn't there.
-
When I first started powerlifting one of the Saturday sports shows showed the World Championships and while I was watching this fucker. I believe his name was Paul Jordan,he gets all psyched up and squats and got crushed under it. I have always had that vision in my mind while squatting
-
I believe he went too heavy
-
U magically gain 968% more mass trainning in tth 1to3 rep range
-
Needed to wait for his knee-sleeves to arrive first.

Agreed, dumping the bar behind him would have saved him.
That’s a total freak accident and not with THAT much weight either. Good reminder that weight training is risky and not to be taken lightly.
-
There was a 100-lb Asian woman who though squatting 315 on a smith-machine was a good idea (couple yrs ago).
Folder her like an accordion while her kid watched her die.
People = not too clever...

Hahaha Jesus that was bad. He got so psyched up and brutally failed! Loved the critical commentary from Mel Gibson as well.

Why does he look like Chewbacca?
-
The guy behind him most likely attributed to that death. Like what are you even going to do there behind him, except not allow him to drop the weight, also could of had some safety bars, why even try to attempt weight that you can't even do 1 rep of
-
Are the red plates 25 kg?
-
This is why I'm weak, I don't want to die training at home alone :D
-
they dont teach people how to bail anymore?
-
That spotter needs to get a tear drop tatted on his face now
-
Should have had spotter racks. I saw a video of a crossfitter doing a snatch and dropping it on his back breaking his spine paralyzing him.

this dude
accident looked like nothing
-
Ouch
-
For me, use light weight for reps and stay in the rack with safeties set. I never did squat heavy and always used a proper rack.
-
Would have to put focus on that single useless spotter from his position of behind the gentleman squatting.. . He was part of the problem, for he tend to get in the way of what may have been a possible better exit path for the squatter when the exercise started to go bad. Now hind sight of course, the squatter is dead.
Having two spotters, one on each side, would have been a safer method, if having any spotters at all. Though the gentleman squatting appeared crushed by that weight in that extreme low position, spotters or not. (?can't tell by the video if there might have been spotter on each side?)
Could say the same for heavier benches and the uselessness of one guy spotting from the rear....madness of course.

True, but lifting that heavy greatly increases the likelihood of some future accident like what happened.

People need to know their limits.
I never squatted over 5-plates in my life, nor do I ever intend to try...

I never did either but that was because I wasn't strong enough. :-[

Guy went to Snap City :-\
Wasnt even that much weight tbh. Its all relative i guess
-
This is a freak accident, I think the first of its kind? Yes the spotter probably contributed to the outcome and the lack of safety stops was a fatal error but plenty of people have failed in this manner and walked away. Bench press is still far more dangerous
-
I don’t like watching shit like that, so can someone post how much weight he was trying to squat?

3 red plates + 1 blue plate per side, plus the bar so 215kg or 210kg depending on how much the bar weighs … 460-465lbs

Up right rows and standing strict bar curl is even more dangerous
-
So, it was what? 400 lbs or thereabouts?
Shit..... guys in their late teens in my gym go pretty close to that all the time. For 3 and 4 fairly "easy" reps.
You'd never think that you would die going to the gym. Maybe that's why his set up was so lax?
I can't watch it. But from the still photo I saw it does look pretty high up on his neck.
I'm not much of a squatter. I do front squats with 135 for 4, 5 sets of 15 to 20 reps. Quads still grow and it's fairly safe. Plus it seems like it's great cardio. Totally wipes me out.
-
Why don't some people use safety bars when they squat? It just seems so stupid, especially when you are attempting a PR like this...

Yeah, you could drop the weight on your feet. Won't cripple or kill you but sure will hurt.

Yes, just about every gym is filled with teens and late teens doing 405 on squats parallel with ease……….

Safe to say he won’t be doing an PR’s anytime soon
