Kevin Levrone is/was the most intriguing of the 1990s bbers, and I think he had the best genetics out of all them.  He had a back injury early on that limited his ability to train legs and back to the fullest degree.  Also, he was known to come off for half the year and shrink down to nothing .. if not for these two factors, could he have been Mr O?

https://www.muscleandfitness.com/flexonline/training/kevin-levrones-training-philosophies/

The list of things that make Kevin Levrone unique among bodybuilding icons could fill this article. Here are five:

Some years he trained for only four months.
Both of his parents died of cancer before his first contest.
He won 19 open pro shows in the 1990s—more than anyone else.
He was the founder and lead singer of the rock band Fulblown.
He holds the record for most Mr. Olympia runnerup finishes without a Mr. O victory:

~HIGHER SETS

In 1994, FLEX published a Levrone article that included his “favorite triceps workout.” If you’re drinking a protein shake now, swallow, or you’ll likely spray your whey. OK, here we go. That workout was made up of five exercises—four of which were types of pushdowns—and a total of 28 sets! He must’ve spent an hour at a cable station just to plow through his initial 24 sets of pushdowns. This was a bit of an anomaly. It was a year after he tore his pec benching heavy, and he was experimenting with higher reps (12 to 15 per set) and extreme volume. Still, even a more typical Levrone triceps routine, like the one included here, features 16 sets. And he did a similar quantity of higher-than-average volume for other body parts, including a matching 16 sets for biceps.

~HEAVY METAL

“I was a heavy lifter from the start,” Levrone remembers. “Strength just came natural to me.” He had been hitting the iron seriously for only a year, but in 1990, at 220, he could bench press 465. While benching 550 in February 1993, he tore his right pec, but even that curtailed him only temporarily. Like pancakes and syrup, he and heavy metal just go together. You can watch a YouTube video of him incline pressing 455 for four strict reps (after doing 495-pound benches) only 12 days before the 1998 Mr. Olympia. Those are Ronnie Coleman-ish numbers, but at his largest the eight-time Mr. O outweighed the four-time almost-Mr. O by about 50 pounds. With his stupendous triceps and capacious deltoids, Levrone was a pressing machine. But he didn’t stop there. Every exercise was a strength challenge—hack squats, pulldowns, shrugs, everything. He passed his tests over and over again. Get stronger and get bigger.

 LEVRONE’S TRICEPS ROUTINE

Close-grip Bench Press | SETS: 4 | REPS: 6–8
Lying Triceps Extension | SETS: 4 | REPS: 6–8
Rope Pushdown | SETS: 4 | REPS: 6–8
One-arm Dumbbell Extension | SETS: 4 | REPS: 6–8

Really irritating personality... kind of "precious," don't know quite how to explain it. Kind of similar to Flex Wheeler.

Levrone was also born in Rome, Italy. According IMDB.

Very quiet and … vacant.

But a heck of a bodybuilder.

This

Him and flex wheeler both are very small naturally, frame wise and just build in general, it’s their incredible response to steroids especially Levrone, wheeler had the better muscle bellies

Incredible physiques when gassed

Add dexter to the list too, naturally just very small individuals, joints, frame, build

Ageed, but at least levrone had a bit of natural clavicle width and a 'good potential' look about his physique pre-serious training. Flex was notably heath-esque narrow, even after taking up the noble endeavour that is Stage Thonging (but before hitting the supps hard)

Both had incredible drug response, but I give the edge to MMM based on balancing aesthetics with a 'powerful' look wheeler never really could match with his tiny joints, but that's subjective obviously

he started to pursue music in 2000 and would shrink down and stop training

legs don't seem to have muscle memory like the upper body, being close to 40 probably didn't help as that's not exactly prime years, the fact that he didn't squat anymore probably didn't help either

His mistake was not training year round and downsizing way too much, that and especially competing against Ronnie and then Jay coming up

Different eras than the 70’s where you can get away with that but not in the 90’s where guys were much more massive

But then again, that might have prolonged his health, you win some, you lose some

Kev tore his pic, I believe at some point between the 1993 Mr. Olympia and the 1994 Mr. Olympia.

EDIT: it was between 1992 and 1993:

https://fb.watch/lZVnWT3pGY/

And he even won the 1994 Arnold fresh off that tear...wow:

https://www.instagram.com/p/B8b0lhCBnK9/

He was unable to train [or train as fully] during that time, and chose to come off gear too, because of that.

Most likely, he stopped eating as much also.

Then, allegedly only in July of 1993, Kevin started training again, and ended up coming in shape at the 1993 Mr. Olympia contest in September, still in great shape, as if nothing changed.

That's when Kev learned that he could basically take half a year off everything every year. And that's what he started doing thereafter.

He would shrink down to about 200- to 210-lb. In that range.

Then he got more into music too, as you said, Earl.

IMO, that time off gear every year may have greatly extended his life.

Regarding his legs:
A classic Getbigger once told me that Kev was squatting around 585-lb for 8-12 reps, back around 1990 or 1991. But he later stopped that level of legs training / squatting intensity.

Then later, he was closer to 40, as you said. At the 2003 Mr. Olympia for instance.

I didn't know that about muscle memory for legs...although one way or another, legs seem to be the first thing to go for bodybuilders aged 40+...and that is a pretty consistent thing.

Yes, he was near perfect.
Title: Re: MaryLand Muscle Machine
Post by: Matt on July 24, 2023, 01:06:16 AM
Yes, he was near perfect.

Although Ronnie Coleman has always been the GOAT for bodybuilding to me since 2003, I have to say that Kev's muscle bellies may have been superior. Ronnie just way outsized Kev...even at Kev's biggest.

Compare Kev's biceps bellies to mine. I'm OK with my arms look...but look at that massive 4cm gap where my biceps muscle inserts above the elbow joint.

Complete genetic inferiority. And I trained my chest to a 345-lb bench at barely over 180...and for what? My chest SUCKS.

Yet people like Dave Palumbo constantly drive home the point about hard work. OK, Dave...is "hard work" going to extend the genetic length of my biceps muscle ~4cm?  ::)

Palumbo even said in his tribute video to Gustavo Badell that Badell told him "I WORK HARD!"

GUSTAVO DIED AT 50 FROM PED ABUSE. HE PROBABALY TOOK 30+ YEARS OFF HIS LIFESPAN AND DAVE *STILL* HARPS ON "HARD WORK".  ::)

God...just stay it's genetic shape, and drug response. But nah...Dave has supplements and workout programs to say to masses of naive people.

Just look at this genetic inferiority...I have accepted it now, and as I said, I don't mind my overall arms shape, but in NO WORLD will "hard work" overcome this:

Now look at how Kevin's biceps insert almost immediately above his elbow joint. Even when Kev is SKINNY, you can clearly see this, because muscle shape is GENETIC.

You can tell Kev has a superior genetic template for being muscular, even when he's 185-lb.

In the ninetees there weren't the medical options of today, regarding spinal injuries. He could have become crippled from surgery.

His biceps were not very good though, flat, no peaks, his triceps and shoulders were world class

Ronnie, flex, now those are top biceps, but Ronnie’s triceps were ok

I think that’s just skilled posing.  His wrist isn’t fully supinated, it’s about halfway there, making his biceps look longer.  Try it for yourself, flex your biceps with your wrist supinated, and then pronate your wrist .. the gap will disappear.

Obviously Kevin has insane muscle shape but his triceps are superior to his biceps, he was just skilled enough at posing to hide his flaws.

I met Levrone about 2 months after the 1994 Arnold Classic. I believe that he was 28 at the time. His biceps were pretty damn peaked in my opinion. But that was in person. In pictures, the peaks might not be impressive. But standing next to him in person was a much different story.

One of the other things that stood out seeing him in person was that his hair had a lot of red in it. Standing under the bright lights, the red stood out. I thought that was surprising at the time.

True, I agree his biceps weren’t bad, but in comparison to some of the top competition it was “lacking” a bit, by no means it was a weakness on his physique

Who was the most impressive in your opinion in person?

I’ve seen most of the 90’s guys, flex and Cormier at golds, and Ronnie training for the O in 2003 at metroflex, I’ll give flex the nod in terms of overall physique, the muscle bellies, the cartoon look, best I’ve seen, Ronnie, however, was just a monster, huge beyond belief

I was at the 1996 NOC. Ronnie’s peaks were great. But I remember thinking that Don Long’s biceps were better than Wheeler’s

I also thought that Coleman should have won.

The placings
1) Wheeler
2) Coleman
3) Long

Sometimes I feel bodybuilding is just a bull shit activity. It's a sport based on drug use. No drugs and the sport disappears. I know fans of bodybuilding drugs will say all sports use. It isn't true but it makes guys feel good about sticking needles in their ass to look good to the clueless. Amazing how so many pros look amazing the day of the contest then 5 months later look like absolute crap.

Ronnie, flex, now those are top biceps, but Ronnie’s triceps were ok

You can't have it all!

My biceps are basically short AND flat. At least Kev has long/full biceps.

Kev is extraordinary.

He is such a tiny tit that he makes bhanky look buff.  But when he takes the drugs he balances the Steroid Universe against bhanky's 2 grams a week for decades and zero improvement.   Might well be a nice guy in the real world but most of us will  never know as we are not in his world.  I wish him some normalcy as his years pass ever faster toward his personal infinity.

I did notice that in the photo below, PV.

But I still think he has some exceptional biceps genetics, despite him taking advantage of his posing, as you said.

Now that you mentioned it - I WILL try that wrist supination trick. You make me wonder how my biceps will look there, lol.

Would like to see Phil Heath attempt the same feat.  His last contest was in 2020, so let’s see him do the 2033 Mr O

Bodybuilders trained in this way years ago, cleans, clean & press... a lot of Olympic lifts were in many a routine.
It was just later that machines took over & the "isolation" training began. Why clean & press a bar when you can sit on a machine & just press.

with regards to Kevin, he likes the old school heavy ass training so i am not surprised he now does these basic, multiple muscle lifts.

Lol...well, if the story involved Samir Bannout, Mike Mentzer, and Casey Viator, that would have put it at around, what, 1983?

Cellphone cameras weren't as common back then.  ;D

But your post sort of reminded me of the first meme below. Then I found the other two, while searching for the first one.  ;D

Although that meme would be more appropriate to send to OAK - he literally spent 3+ years believing that Covid was a lethal plague, and no amount of evidence proved otherwise to him.  ::)

I hate posting sources for people who won't change their views no matter how much evidence you give them.

Didn't Mike Mentzer had shorter arms than Samir Bannout? So it would make sense Samir's deadlift was stronger.

Also, I'm not surprised that even a bodybuilder would miss a 500-lb deadlift if they don't specifically train deadlift. And it's not like Mentzer or Viator were mass monsters. They probably just never deadlifted. But who knows?

Yes, good sir.

If it happened at Gold's Gym Venice, there were probably witnesses.

In the "RXMuscle Power Hour" podcast from ~2011, Tom Prince was asked about some of his best lifts, and mentioned his 700-lb deadlift for 3 reps.

I recall 2001 FLEX magazine pictures with Milos Sarcev deadlifting 675-lb.

And of course Ronnie Coleman's 800-lb for 2 reps was legendary. Other big bodybuilder DL's would be Johnnie Jackson who pulled ~805-lb, and Dallas McCarver who pulled 845-lb.

So, IMO, most pro bodybuilders deadlift in the 500-700 range, with only exceptionally strong ones exceeding that.

I would guess that probably 80% of bodybuilders DL between 525-675. Maybe around 60% are between 550-650.

I'm speculating. But if most pros deadlift 700+, they aren't posting videos of it.

So I'm not shocked that two 1980's IFBB pros likely both weighing sub-230, and probably not deadlifting regularly or at all - with shorter arms - failed to deadlift 500-lb. Heck, well under 1% of men deadlift 500+.

But - there is no absolute proof. That said, Fortress used to write for MUSCLEMAG, and was very connected/networked in the bodybuilding industry. He has proven his credibility.

In general, I trust Fortress on such matters.

Jack,

As Rob said, it was 585, not 500.

The only knowledge I have of it came from Samir himself

He said the Mentzer bros and Viator were doing deadlifts.  They'd loaded the bar to -- yep -- 585, and before any of them attempted it, Samir says he ran up and half-jokingly grabbed the bar and made some smart-ass remark (I think he said, "Ready!", as in "ready to rep this" or somesuch).

Viator allegedly told Samir to get lost -- that he couldn't hang, blah blah.

They all took their turns.  Again, according to Samir, Mike got one hard rep with the weight; the supposedly much stronger Viator and Ray couldn't get it, and Samir went on to do several reps.

Could be true.  Again, as Rob said, there were supposed witnesses, even though I will say that eyewitness testimony is the lowest form of evidence.

Bob Kennedy died a bit too young, IMO [age 73], with excessive tanning in his youth what he claimed to be the cause of his skin cancer. Sad stuff - MUSCLEMAG turned to garbage without him, and very quickly folded.

Regarding you asking why bodybuilders should deadlift - exactly...why should they?

Major injury potential, for a lift that you can probably get the same progress on using exclusively other lifts. Although perhaps that's not exactly true. But the injury potential is still there, so it's probably for the best that bodybuilders avoid deadlifting.

Wow.

Great details, TP.

The deadlift weight being 585-lb makes the story more believable. That's a lot of weight, even among seasoned lifters.

Didn't Ray Mentzer squat 900?

Wife must have been not exactly a head-turner if he had to pound out the old lady on the side.

IIRC he had to fuck the lady real good in exchange for room and board

Did not know that

In the 90’s and early 2000’s he never did from his training vids and battle for the olympia “DVD’s”

1- Levroneeeee Stopped talking to Shawn Ray because Shawn told him he was going to get his ass handed by bodybuilders that didn't even deserve to stand next to him on stage

2- Dexter said Kevin was going to place dead last ....And Kevin said that Dexter was beaten by him in the past and he wouldn't have any problem beating him again ...  lol

Levrone didn’t have Mr and Mrs Smith cooking his flounder, rice and green bean meals hence the dead last placing. Remember when Kevin didn’t know what red pepper was and then sniffed the shaker in curiosity? He’s a special guy who needs lots of help.

He’s a pretty special case

Can’t even string simple sentences together

Struggles with saying “100 pound dumbbell curls in your face”

And you can hear the wife or ex wife in the vid talking to him like a child

But do you have proof you can post?

There are photos of the Samir/Viator/Mentzer deadlifting event on microfilm located in your mother's vagina.  Go find it.

She knew right away what was happening (it probably happened regularly)

But Kev does what he does for the fans and not to lose popularity
