Title: Tommy Morrison, helluva fighter
Post by: Wiggs on September 16, 2023, 05:07:32 AM
He had some great wins over some superior Hebrews. He definitely had holes in his game but helluva fighter nonetheless.  RIP Champ

Great video!

That Mercer fight though, wow... Took too many shots being tangled in the ropes.
And Ray had a head like a cement slab, it was hard to hurt him...

Brutal KO... (If true)

Yeah every now and then I see that clip of those two going at it. He has a helluva jaw and head to be able to eat Tommy's onslaught and then dish out what he did. Ref stopped it way too late.

Would have been a better fighter if he hadn't turned away from Rocky and to the Duke for more money.

Legend tells it Tommy Gun got the AIDS from Duke's redhead in the fur coat.

He helped keep the heavyweights relevant in the 90’s.

Must have been good enough at acting because I like Rocky 5.

I think it’s better than Rocky 3.

Tragic story behind Tommy Morrison. When that boy was at his prime, he would hit like a Mack truck. Nonetheless, he made it to be a champion and did reach fame inside the ring and outside (Rocky 5). I remember watching him fight against Merciless Ray Mercer and was surprised at him not passing away that night.

It all went downhill when he teamed up with George Washington Duke. His demise truly came when Tommy wasn't willing to listen to the Duke's instruction. Past that point, we never heard from him again.

At the 1:11-1:16 mark, you can hear the wise words from George Washington Duke himself.

He was also the grandnephew of John Wayne (birth name:  Marion Morrison).

R.I.P.

Interesting life story.

I was always curious where his career would have went if he wasn’t diagnosed with the AIDS. That Mercer fight was brutal but he recovered to get wins against Foreman and Ruddock.

I don’t remember his Lennox Lewis fight other than he lost, but he was still young and at his peak when the HIV positive results came in. I think I read that he also partied heavily so who knows how well he would have done but I always wondered…..

Pre prison Tyson - no.
Post prison Tyson - no but it would have been like Foreman vs Ron Lyle. Tyson could take Tommy's punches better than Tommy could take Tysons. That fight was all but set until Tommy got the hivvy.

I like what you said because it's true. Tyson would be much better at taking Tommy's shots vs the opposite.  That was one of Tommy's weaknesses.  Not a glass jaw but weaker than you need to be an elite of elite fighter.

I don't think so. Tua vs Morrison would have been cool too.

Agreed. Tommy just got hit too cleanly. I'd describe him as defensively irresponsible.

He was entertaining to watch. Very good fighter IMO, but I am not an expert lol!

I liked his Rocky appearance.

Tommy was a great offensive fighter. If fight were only scheduled for 4 rds he'd never have lost. Unfortunately his chin wasn't all that great and his stamina was suspect too. Eventually he fixed the stamina issues and became slightly more durable. Early in his career and especially in the Mercer fight he would throw everything he had in the first 3 or 4 rds and then get gassed. As soon as he got tired his hands would come down.

Someone mentioned the Lennox Lewis fight.. It was not one of Tommy's better performances.  Lewis was had size and stature on Tommy as well as being a better schooled fighter. It was fairly anti climactic. Lewis was just better and an accumulation of punches ended the Duke around the 5th or 6th round.

Don't forget Michael Bentt knocked him silly in 1 round.
