Title: Fortress...calling you out!
Post by: Titus Pullo on September 19, 2023, 12:22:27 PM
 ;D

Just kidding.  Everyone here knows you're legit.  You're intelligent, likeable ,have been in the game for a long time and have tons of stories to tell.  I like you (Jane, please spare me the "OP drinking gallons of jizz" pic, dear ;) ).

Anyhow, I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to hear more of your stories; e.g., some specifics about training with pros like Nasser who, per one of our conversations eons ago, left you "marvelled" at how much he struggled to incline press 315 for a few reps.

For that matter, I know you started out in bodybuilding but transitioned to powerlifting.  What sort of training modality do you use now?  How does it differ from your bodybuilding routines and general training ethos?

Just curious, mate.  I'm tired of the selfies threads and back and forth nonsense associated therewith.  It'd be nice to have a real discussion for a change :)

Fortress is the man!

Great post, Titus Pullo.

Some good questions in there too. I have been doing a bodybuilding-style program for almost four months now. But I have that tickle to get stronger. Hitting a bench/squat/deadlift of 350/450/550 would be nice, at 185-lb body weight.

It would be a challenge, but I think I can get pretty close [with knee wraps, straps, and a bench bounce].

Fortress has hit some incredible lifts, including a full ass to the grass 635-lb squat, basically going as low as the guy in the picture below.  ;D

Just kidding. But he has incredible power.

He is also against the current Woke insanity. I am a big fan of his posts.  :)

The Fortress "315 x 25" squat is pretty fucking crazy...

Incredible lift.

Obviously depth matters, but Fortress buries his squats.

I had a friend who squatted 315 for 30 [if I recall correctly...it may have been 25 reps]. At six feet/ 220-lb [photo below].

I have never personally witnessed anyone else hit that. That is a phenomenal squat with 315.

I suspect that if Fortress got 315 for 30 reps, that he buried each rep. My friend was a parallel squatter, but his max squat was well below Fort's [500-lb to Fort's PR of 635].

I think some people are built better for squats, or just don't hate them as much. Personally I loathe squats...I get bad knee valgus.

I always assumed Fortress must be built for squatting - or just loves the lift, the way Ed Coan did.

Never squatted 600 pounds but I have done 315 x 20 "fairly" easily.

What intelligent post has Fortress ever put on here?

I think he posts great stories. Here's one:

So Fortress is perusing DVDs at his local Sunrise Records.

Gnome Rainbow Bright Fruitcake employee broad is yappin’ about, pestering me. As if I want the company. No one else is in the place.

I see Get Out on the shelf and say, “Good movie, in approach. Too bad about the whole evil-white-guy thing it pushes.”

The little LBTWRONG+ gremlin says something about how White people are evil.

She’s White.

I counter with a, Well, every non-White wants to live in our nations, so I guess we are less evil and more badass.

“Are you a WHITE SUPREMACIST?” she asks.

“Naturally.”

Rainbow Bright immediately begins to cry: “Oh, my god! I am sooo scared right now!”

She is legit sobbing, tears streaming down her face.

I pull out the American Psycho classic … “I’m leaving. I’ve assessed the situation, and I’m going.”

Fortress doesn’t need this shit.

And another great one:

So, yesterday I’m at Sunrise Records, and I’m paying using my iPhone. It requires face recognition, so I pull down my paper mask (aren’t allowed entry without). The cashier girl immediately takes a few steps back.

I’m thinking, Is this real life?

She’s roughly 20 years old and very obviously a lesbian. Nice girl. But is this the average person in these times? Entirely committed to the pLandemic joke?

The store is in a mall, and spouting every few minutes from its announcement system is crap about wearing masks, etc., and ending with, “We’re all in this together!”

Nope. We’re definitely not.

And as far as gym masking, the past few months I’ve been lifting completely bald-faced. Signs ask members to wear a mask upon entering, but not a chance.

Heck, in my condo there are postings stating a temporary by-law mandates one to don a mask in all common areas of the building.

Just not gonna happen.

On “vacation” to attend my folks’ 60th anniversary …

Thanks for all the rockin’ words for Fortress. Love you boys.

More when I return home next week, but …

Best in-comp squat is 660 (obviously no drugs), and in gym, 705. Best with 315 is 31. Went down for 32 … and never returned upright with it. Hahaha Ass-to-Asia, muthas!

Lots of fun lifting sessions and bonkers shenanigans. Been at it without pause since 1985.

And lots of stories, yep.

Have to share as they’re remembered.

Platz almost killed me in Gold’s in 1994. Hahahahaha

Thanks again to my Getbig brothers.

Never squatted 600 pounds but I have done 315 x 20 "fairly" easily.

That's a great lift.

I hate squatting, and the most I ever got was 385x2 to well below parallel [contest depth - like the picture below]. It's the only one of my three PL lifts I do in contest form [I bounce my max bench, and deadlift with straps].

I was 170 at the time, but I think I was pretty close to 405 with wraps. I feel like I can get to 405+, but I have some knee valgus, so I've only been leg pressing lately. A 405+ squat will be fine with me, as it is my weakest area. I don't even see anyone squat 405 once a year.

I just never cared for the movement...I should have just forced myself to squat more, but...here I am, with some catching up to do.

I was good for 315x10 before...I just can't recall if I had wraps at the time. A 315x20 squat is great - especially if your depth was good. Good stuff.

On “vacation” to attend my folks’ 60th anniversary …

Wow! Good for them. My grandma just turned 91 on the 8th. She lives up the street from me, and is my only living grandparent. She made it to her 56th wedding anniversary before my grandpa died in 2012.

A full 60 years is a long marriage. I wonder how people do it. Good for them. That's great that you are still on good terms with them.

Best in-comp squat is 660 (obviously no drugs), and in gym, 705.

Amazing! Geez...I didn't realize you squatted that.  :o I must have confused your 635 story. Maybe it was an attempt to go several levels deeper than usual. I know you are a big advocate of full depth squatting.

Best with 315 is 31. Went down for 32 … and never returned upright with it. Hahaha Ass-to-Asia, muthas!

LOL. I knew it. 😆

A friend of mine [picture bove] squatted 315x30, and he was maybe a 550 squatter to parallel at his best. His 30 reps were parallel.

I figured you would have been squatting much lower. Depth makes a huge difference - not only is the range of motion longer, but IMO, getting out of the hole is the hardest part. So 315x31 ass-to-the-grass would be a lot harder than 315x30 to parallel.

Ed Coan was the master at BARELY breaking parallel [he purposely did that, to maximize his squat while still getting green lights].

What do you think of Coan's squat depth, Fortress?

And you mentioned competing - was that at a full powerlifting meet? I'm assuming so.

What are your best bench and deadlift, Fortress?

i trained at a gym with incredibly strong powerlifters.

my best high rep squats were 4 plates for 18 and
5 plates for 10.

and if you didn't break parallel every rep you  wouldn't
be training there long.

but thought i was a total weakling compared to the other squats

Illuminati is an animal.

He would have to be to do that. Incredible lift.

My goals are 350/450/550, at 185-lb body weight.

On Getbig, everyone says it's common to see people at the gym squatting 405 or deadlifting 495...but there are not more than 25 guys in my city of 108K who deadlift over 550. I never see it.

And my hypochondria kicks in, and I stay or go back to 170. The True Adonis once said: even adding 20-lb of body fat will make us stronger.

Oleksii Novikov is only 265-lb at 6'1". I wonder how strong he would get if he did a serious heavy bulk, and put on 30-lb. "The World's Strongest Gay" [oh brother  ::)] Rob Kearney is only 285-lb at 5'10". I wonder how he would do at 335?

But it could be a bad idea.

I'm shooting for 350/450/550, at 185 b-w. The bench won't be a problem, but my squat will need the most improvement.

Hearing about illuminati and others hitting crazy numbers past the age of 40...45...even 50...it's inspiring to me.

I just want to keep the momentum going, and stay on focus until I hit those numbers.

For health reasons, I want to stay at 185-lb / 84-kg body weight, so I'm trying to be realistic. It may not even be possible for me at 185, but...time will tell.

I know you've trained at some serious gyms, wazhazbin.

We have had many contests in my city. Only maybe 25 guys here can deadlift over 550.

I can honestly say I don't see anyone squat 405-lb at either of my gyms in the average year. I almost never witness that.

Some food for thought:
Only 1-3% of people who go to the gym bench press 225+. And only about 20% of people even go to the gym. That means a 225 bench puts you between the top 0.2% to top 0.6% of strongest people overall.

So many here say it's common to see people squat 405+ or deadlift 495+...but I almost never see that.

Like I said, from the contests here, only maybe 25 guys can deadlift 550. I have no reason to think that is different than the North American average. In fact, in 2013, 8 of the 20 Ontario's Strongest Man competitors were from my city. The "weakest" one deadlifted 585, and only five men in my city deadlift 700+ [or have done so].

I just don't believe some claims. You and Fortress are both credible, so I don't doubt you. But I just don't believe some of the claims I read.

All very strong lifts Matt, 350 bench at 185 is pretty crazy. Good luck with all those, I’m sure you will get them as you are a crazy strong fella.

I have ripped a joint and worked out a few times. Gotta be in the right mood but it’s fun, you get super focused and just get in a zone and keep on going and next thing you know 3-4 hours have passed and your still cranking. Also when I’ve done it things don’t bother me as much so I don’t get mad at idiots in the gym, I either don’t notice them or just laugh. So it has a few good points to doing it. I haven’t smoked or eaten an edible in a while. It’s almost about that time haha. Thanks for reminding me. I like to take a couple months off 2-3 times a year and clear out.

All very strong lifts Matt, 350 bench at 185 is pretty crazy. Good luck with all those, I’m sure you will get them as you are a crazy strong fella.

Thanks Rob!

The 24-hour gym I go to is small, and I hate hoggingequipment. But to get my squat up, I will need to...well...squat, lol.

I think going at midnight might be the solution there.

My knees buckle, so I've been doing leg presses to address that. The old leg press at my gym is the hardest that I've used, and I want to press 1,000-lb for reps on it before working on my squat. The picture below is from my last successful attempt before failing with 990.

Luckily, the 350 bench at 185 is the lift I'm most certain of, as I previously got 340 at 170, and 345 later.

LOL!!!

I was wondering if you tried that.  ;D

I have had edibles a couple of times...it was the most terrifying experience ever. I'll put it this way:

Smoking THC to me is like how others react to edibles. And edibles...that's just next level. I can't do it.

It's too bad, because THC is a godsend to a lot of people. But it is what it is.

That's good that you take time off. I know it's "just weed", but I've had a few friends eventually develop paranoia issues from smoking it daily for 5-15 years. Some time off is probably good.

I know that one person who has been there, done that, and seen that - it's you, wazhazbin. Ditto for Fortress.

I am having a bit of an issue with my spotters doing too much or taking over too soon lately. I just want them to give a feather touch at most.

Basically, as long as it's going up steadily, leave it be or do a feather touch. But as with lifting, spotting takes some refinement to get right.

I just started training for strength 17 days ago. I personally prefer the look that comes from bodybuilding-style style training, but the eating is the part I struggle to keep up with.

Matt this is a picture of me squatting 600 although I guess a picture doesn’t prove I made it I could have missed but I wouldn’t have saved a picture for over 40 years of a miss. I understand your scepticism because the last time I was in a commercial gym nobody was even doing squats. There are still some gyms out there with some studs lifting though.Later guys

I personally prefer the look that comes from bodybuilding-style style training, but the eating is the part I struggle to keep up with.

i know the feeling of spotters taking over..

i remember these two guys at my gym had crazy strong benches.  but the spotters hands were always on the
bar but they'd be saying 'it's all you it's all you'.

then i get a spot from one of them,,,  and a weight i'm gonna do six with and i'm at nine not even trying and they
are yelling 'it's all you, it's all you'

i rack it and say 'next time let me help you a bit'

Its like youre lying down to give them an upright row spot instead...

340 at 170 is a crazy bench. Congrats on that.

Yeah I’m a very low dose kind of guy. Edibles 2-5 mgs 2 if I’m going out and 5 if I’m hanging in and when I do rip joints it’s 1-2 hits. I’m a lightweight. I’ve tripped my balls off on 10mg edibles and it is scary. A joint usually lasts me prob 6 months cause I really only smoke 1-2 times a month. Edibles though I will do everyday for a couple months then break for two months.

You fellas are strong and impressive.

Fortress hails!

My best comp dead is 650. Was good for a close-to seven but decided to re-do my second attempt, 650, because I put down the bar without the signal and got dinged, and I wanted a sure-thing for my total, not the opening poundage (just under six). Also, the second 650 was within four minutes of the second attempt, as my flight was only three lifters, including me. Hahaha

Best comp press, 415.

Very much worth more, now. Heck, at my last bench session I pause-pressed a set of 10 with 315. I’ve reverse-grip pressed 405 with a pause, too.

I still believe I can crank it up into the 425-plus arena.

Years ago, when I competed my best lift in a meet was 635 raw at 220 pounds.

I think my best in the gym was 670 at 250ish pounds.

Never did the high rep heavy weight stuff because my lower back would cramp up.

But we used to end our BBing workouts with windowmaker sets of 225, i think i hit 40 a few times.

I remember not being able to walk up the stairs of my apartment after a few workouts.

This is going to seem backwards but sometimes I feel in a better groove with front squats.

I can go heavier with back squats, but being a bit taller, the leverage seems to work against me, especially on days when my lower back or trunk is tired.

I rarely drop below 6 reps anymore and on front squats I probably don’t drop below 10 reps. One of the things I’ve always done with squats is a blow out set of something like 225 x 50 every couple of weeks. The high reps work best for me. I always do heavy hack squats too, more leg development down near my knees keeps away that odd carrot-leg look.

Higher reps on front squats is a real oxygen drainer !!
225x 50 Good going to say the least.
Always that bit more awkward doing back squats for most over the 6ft 2-3inch mark.

As for hack squats on a machine - I stay away from them as they plague my knees
only ever found a couple of machines that didn't make them ache.
Going full depth on front & back squat give me muscle development right down
To the knees.

The blowout sets are typically back squats. I only ever do full depth, narrow stance, toes out type squats. I don’t always wear knee wraps but I do always wear a belt.

I also do quite a bit of hamstring work to try to keep the front/back of my quads balanced.

I agree. Most hack squat machines make my knees hurt by the 2nd warm up set. Never had such issues with front squats regardless of weight/reps.

Likewise I do a lot for hamstrings - always start leg workout doing calves
& hamstrings before thighs.

Same don't use wraps a belt 50/50 depends how i'm feeling
Didn't use wraps when i was doing the 420 for reps.

Wes, the squat movement always felt right to me, like the bench press.

I was not very good at straight bar curling initially until I worked on by hand and forearm strength. Then I found I could isolate my biceps better.

Hello Sir !   🙋‍♀️

I took a step back from the heavier weights on squats and I have been concentrating on doing sets of 12 reps.

The past few weeks I have been working hard on my bench press and dips. I leave next Friday for Oktoberfest. I fly into Frankfurt.

Some really impressive lifts here

Although none of them count ever unless done this minute with a semi nude photo for our resident predator to knock one out to

I’ve never done the low rep stuff

When 16 at 160 I boxed and was in good nick . I used to do a superset of 20 rep squats and 20 rep stiff legged deadlifts with 250 for 4 supersets - used to put much st  fry infer lifters in a box

Also chins and dips with plus 30kg for 1Os each

My best training weights have been 3plates incline bench for 3x12 which I was made up with. Deadlifts of 4.5 plates for 8’s and hammer pull downs with 5 plates each arm

Nowhere near some of the weights here but I have the bone structure of a child- great when lean and in shape not so good when shifting weights

Skyline in catford saw two fellas do 7 plate squats for 4

And where I train now there are some insane lifts
They have a pl station one fella weighed 79k and pulled 240 which blew my mind

Dumbbell rows with 100k bells for 10!

Some strong people out there- a fitness girl in the gym does 4 plates each side on the hack for 5x12

For me in the 13 weeks left this year it’s about getting food in and staying injury free

Am about to up the protein to 350gn daily with a slight decrease in carbs see where it takes us over the coming months - training daily for mental reasons as much as anything!

Today is officially my folks’ 60th, although the fam get-together will be Sunday.

Fortress flies home on the 28th.

So happy to see a thread “about me” has instigated a lasting yapperama about some Getbig hoisting heroics.

You’re all hauling/have hauled ass!

What a collective of badasses.

Proud to be one of the Getbig family.

HAIL & KILL

Wow,that`s a long time....congrats to them both!!

Thank you, for them.

My dad is 86 and a cranky bastard. Haha My mom is 83 and has MS. Can’t stand … or do anything, really. She’s stuck in a chair.

Spending my vacation transporting her 15 times each day to the bathroom in this rolling device. Lifting her, etc.

I love them with all my heart, but, man, what an ordeal.

You always hear it growing up, but it’s true: Aging parents is the challenge of a lifetime.
