I know a similar guy I used to work for years ago. Drove an old 15 year old VW Golf, lived in a rough area, average house. Clothes from supermarket chains, cheap processed fast food, etc. His one vice were watches because he said most people would assume they're fake. Finally got himself a decent house away from the ghetto in his late 50s just last year.

I agree but if you truly love something and want it and can get it you should enjoy it. I enjoy two things, rolex watches and roush pick up trucks. So I get them and enjoy them for myself not for anyone else or to show off. I’m far from rich but enjoy what I like.

Well,, i was told Arnold didn't do a great job in California.

For me, it's a love-hate relationship. I don't like them but I enjoy wearing one from time to time, if that makes sense lol. They are surprisingly comfortable.
Before Stallone popularized them, nobody gave a shit about that Italian brand.
I like tool watches and I like the brand's military history. Up until 1956, all of the Panerai cases and movements were assembled by Rolex, and Panerai’s Italian office modified them to suit military requirements.
The Raid on Alexandria in 1941 is an interresting case : 6 Italian Navy frogmen ''rode' torpedoes like underwater motorcycles ( the submersibles were nicknamed “pigs”) and put British battleships out of commission, which almost changed the course of the war.
The divers steered their explosive cargo to established targets and detached mines from the front of their torpedoes and attached them to the hull of their opponents’ battleships.
Two British battleships, HMS Valiant and HMS Queen Elizabeth, were seriously damaged and put out of commission until major repairs were made. Britain gave up its naval supremacy in the central Mediterranean for many months.
Their Radiomir watches were crucial timekeeping tools.

I dont understand people who own luxury timepieces, but dont know anything about the brand's history, basic technical specs etc. Only thing they know is the price they paid for it. To add insult to injury, not many brands have a strong value rentention anyway.
"A gentleman's choice of timepiece says as much about him as does his Saville Row suit."

Rolexes? I don't get it. Watches are just jewelry -- and not especially attractive jewelry, at that.
I can understand enjoying weapons and useful non-anachronistic tools, but watches, which are an anachronism, make no sense.

If memory serves, Evan said on Dennis James' podcast that a buddy of his (who managed his shit for over a decade) inspired him to select this line of work ( same company I think )

It's hard to explain to someone who isn't into watches and watch history.

No one said anything about flexing but to live like a frugal idiot making lots of money is a moron. You aren’t going to take all that money when you die
You can also say the same about bbing and getting big muscles on copious amounts of steroids

Watches and jewelry are not my thing, I dont even like wedding rings. (Mine is inked on and pretty faded now)...
But to each his own...
I like guitars and weights, many think that is foolish...

Nothing is foolish, brother. I collect art. By no means an expert, but know my way around. Should add that an inked ring is a really cool idea. If I had a tattoo that would be it. Lol

You’re right, I didnt intent to come off so strong. Nothing wrong with a wealthy guy living modestly, thats all.

He could do it if he wanted to, he just chooses not to. I dont think its a cheapskate thing, sounds more like a pragmatic anticonsumerism thing. If his car still runs fine, why get a new one? The new ones mostly suck anyways. So long as his clothes dont have holes or stains, who gives a shit. Etc.
Doesnt he have a kid anyways? So he can leave it to him when he dies .. another reason not to spend it.

Yes but what if a 10k watch for Evan is the equivalent of a timex in terms of his finances? Then it’s not really showing off at all.

A watch, being an unnecessary aesthetic item, is something exactly akin to jewelry. No matter how much it costs, it's "showing off" because, in effect, it says: "I can waste $X on this useless fashion item."

Why is something aesthetic 'unnecessary'? Is an appreciation of beauty not an awesome aspect of being human? Spend your hard-earned money on what you enjoy.

Yeah it’s very hard to explain but Rolex yo me is just absolute perfection. The mechanics, the beauty, the feeling I get when I put it on is indescribable. Sounds weird but I absolutely love Rolex watches. I’ve tried many brands, omega, breitling, audemars, patek and while I appreciate them they don’t feel like Rolex. I usually have mine on and you can’t see it but I know it’s there and I can see it whenever I want, so it’s 100% for me. I’ve been buying and selling Rolex watches for 15 years and it’s so much fun to talk watches with a real enthusiast. Also if you know your AD and walk in and buy certain watches you ca walk out and double your money within and hour. Some I flip some I keep. Once again if you don’t get it you won’t get it. It’s like my friends back in the day saying why do you lift? It either bites you or it doesn’t. Like the feeling I get when I fire up my truck, fuck me if it doesn’t get me hard everytime.

So I’ve been looking at pics of centopanis panerai allday and it’s growing on me fast haha. I would wear it on the rubber but it is a sharp looking watch.
I love learning about watches as it truly fascinates me. I did not know this stuff about panerai, appreciate you explaining a bit about them. I will know deep dive into them for a while.

I wear an Apple Watch (Ultra), am straight though.
