If I ever did deadlifts again I'd only use a overhand grip with both hands. I've seen too many torn biceps with the alternate grip. Surprised I never tore one myself.

Same here and I would use straps or my Joe Meeko hooks.......I`m not competing.

No shit.....I met John Farbotniks son in a computer repair shop....he noticed my build asked me if I ever heard of Farbotnik.....I told him of course.....ran upstairs to his crib which was over the shop and brought down a bunch of vintage mags with his father on the cover.

I was at the World championships in 1980 and during the deadlifts Steve Wilson’s bicep let go and kind of rolled up to his shoulder. I had never seen this or even heard of it at that time.

Yeah Cook,I hear they roll up like the proverbial window shade....have seen quite a few bodybuilders with torn biceps that are high, right next to the pec/delt tie in .....looks like a small golf ball.

A guy named Stoil Stolov who I met in Pittsburgh and talked to a lot at contests the best I could as he had a serious foreign accent....great guy.....he would have easily been an IFBB pro if not for 2 torn biceps.....Google his pics,he had it all.

RIP Stoil.  :(

And yet Peoples lifted all that weight and never tore his bicep.

Don't use anabolics and your chances of a torn bicep or pec go to practically zero.

they show the sequence of the lift and the tear in i think the sept 1981 muscle and fitness, green cover going by memory.

he checked for white lights before the pain of the tear was noticed.

I never cared for straps because I like developing a strong grip.

I hear ya`.........I use straps on heavier stuff, but I also work my grip and forearms seperately.

I feel if I want to tax my Lats on heavy DB Rows, more than likely my grip will give out long before my lats are sufficiently beat up,so I`ll use straps on the heavier sets.

I use grippers and a wrist roller also at home, and work forearms directly at the gym.

I use double-overhand w/ figure-8 straps when going heavy.
I dont want tears (bicep) or even my grip maxxed out (carpal).
I used to laugh at that injury (Carpal) but after 25 yrs in IT job at desk, its here...  ::) (Manageable though)..

Typing is the biggest culprit. I'm surprised we don't all have it being on here all the time. ;D

I tore my bicep completely off.  It took six months to get my strength back in my arm after the operation.

He was no doubt strong but looks at how long his arms were. He could tie his shoe laces without bending over.  It surely gave him an advantage in deadlifting.

He only had to pull the bar 2 inches off the floor.

my roommate in the 90s was a pro wrestler and one of the strongest guys
in canada.   he pulled 8 plates for reps with no belt or wraps.

he never did direct forearm work and his forearms rivalled mine.

he got 8 and 1/2 plates to his knees before his 'weak' wrist let go.

Peoples also had those long arms (like he could scratch his ankle while standing normally), and his delts would slump low, almost out of socket.
(If it were a socket joint).
Total freak of nature...

---

Today lifters complain not only about deadlifting on a stiff bar or the gym not having calibrated weights. They can't lift without listening to their music on their ear buds or if they forgot their pre-workout or smelling salts.

THEN THERE WAS BOB PEOPLES!

Bob Peoples deadlifted 725lbs at 181lbs bodyweight and at the age of forty. Peoples did not use any equipment other than a belt and chalk, and made the lift with a mismatched, odd collection of plates on a standard bar.

"Mr. Peoples is a very successful farmer in Tennessee and has his training interrupted often by seasonal work. He has never had the ideal training quarters and fine equipment that most of us enjoy. Most of his equipment was made on the farm. Most of his training has been done out of doors in his farm yard or wherever his weights happened to be at the time. In bad weather he trains in one of the outbuildings or in a cellar. Under such training conditions and without the incentive of training partners his accomplishments are nothing short of unbelievable" - Perry Rader IRONMAN  April/May1952

In contrast to the usual filling the lungs with air (Valsalva Maneuver), Peoples deadlifted with empty lungs.

He also lifted with a bent upper back.

I read that somewhere.
