Depends if McGough brought his gang with him

WATCH OUT ROMANO U DONT WANNA FU*K WITH THESE GUYS! ::)
-
Yeah, romano posted as dirk last month. Said something about peter writing on a 4th grde level.
Which was funny, cause we all know FLEX writes for the 2nd grade level.
-
Craig titus in the blue, Mike Matarazzo on the legg press.

Romano threatened to have me booted from EVERY message board if I ever brought her up when talking about him. That was like 7 months ago maybe?

It must be nice to have that sort of "power" hahahahaha wat a loser!
-
Yeah, I have been threatened with banning, bodily harm, and death so many times that it really doesn't even faze me anymore. I usually just makea funny face at the screen and try to come back with something witty to infuriate the threatening party even further.
-
She's beyond delusional. She's ugly as fucck too.
Is Romano really dating her? I would have thought he'd have better taste than that.
Well, in case you haven't noticed, Romano ain't exactly Romeo himself. They're a good match.
And John "Dirt Diggler" Romano's rants against McGough only served to show just how much of an immature, bitter loser he really is.

Flex writers are actually very good.

Looking at Romano's eyes, he either really f cked up his thyroid or he's a speed freak...His eyes just pop out of his head...

You are full of shit 240!! Romano threatend you? On this board? Prove it. I know Romano and I know he does not post on this board or any other (he is also not Diggler or any other name) and I know you have never had a personal confrontation with him. So, again, you are lying!
FYI: Romano hasn't dated BCH in a long time. I saw him last week and he was with his wife and his son. His wife is hot - MUCH hotter than BCH. He definitely made the right move.

Peter would stab Romano with a turkey leg.

I don't think McGough would give up a turkey leg so easily.

nice topic, and typically I don't get on here to post anything that isn't somehow constgructive...but some of you guys are idiots.
Peter McGough knows more about BB then any of you ever will, but instead of treating him with respect for what he has done for this industry, you make stupid comments about him and another well respected industry writer. I wonder why it is that so many of us industry people find many of the people that post here immature and not worth our time.
Everyone has different tastes as far as the magazines go, and that's why they have the freedom to choose which one they want on the newsstand, each has a different approach at how to view BB, and each has a different fan base. This whole FLEX vs MD battle is such a load of crap.
I can't speak for MD, but FLEX doesn't blast the internet boards in our pages, and in fact, in some ways we find that there are things to be learned from many of the posters on this and other sites. We want to know what the fans are thinking. It is only when things degenerate into baseless name calling of each other and people in the industry that you've never met that we wonder why we would even bother.
You have it at the point now where Jay Cutler is willing to post here (among other pros)...why don't you not try to screw it up with crap like this, and maybe more pros and other people in the sport will start to become more accessible. (I'm sure some of you will just say you don't want the mags here anyway, but you should realize that the majority of the mag staffs are BB fans also).
This thread was just too much.

Agree 100 %. Peter was/is definitely the best writer in Flex. His sense of humour and his writing skills are incredible. All the assholes here who do nothing apart from bashing bodybuilding and bodybuilders can learn a thing or 2 from Peter on how to be funny about bodybuilding without being a jerkoff. Peter's contest reports are easily the best ones there is - makes you feel like you are watching the show yourself. The current writers like Shawn pernie or Greg merritt are just 3rd rate compared to Peter. The only other guy whose writing I liked was John Little. Julian Schmidt is just way over the top IMO.
-
Funny but Shawn Ray and King have been battling for some time now and king stated that he has never really even talked to Shawn...And King battling with people have made him quite abit of money...So my point is if guys "in the industry" are doing the same thing as guys on the net are doing, I don't see a problem with the "as you called it" baseless attacks :-\

I'm always this positive in real life. I have a baby on the way!!!
On the boards, I have to turn on the negativity sometimes to press enough buttons to elicit some true colors from people. Once you have a Bob Chick or Shawn Ray using emotion instead of intellect, you find out what they're really about pretty quickly.
-
Congrats on passing on your name, 240.
..well if it's a boy, but you know what i mean
-
Many midwives say the diet of the mother has a great effect on the gender of the baby. Pasta/Milk = boy, and citrus foods = girl. I don't know if it's true. Guess we'll find out.

There is a reason Peter McGough has risen to the level where he is at, because he is very good at what he does. Great writer, understands bodybuilding, tries to keep it in a sense of respect, and really wants to see bodybuilding grow. He cares about it!
As for John Romano, he also is a very good writer, but there is a difference between the two. John loves to attack, speaks his mind on whatever he wants, and pisses off some people. He did write about Peter (and not nicely either), and other topics, which provoked emotions. That is his style, nothing wrong with it - gives for great discussion on message boards.
John is no longer with Bethany, he is back with his ex-wife, and son, and that is great for him. But I can come up to John, and ask him anything I want, no matter what the topic is, and I can't faze him. He loves the discussions here, just not the utterly baseless attacks.
That is true - Flex does not bash the internet boards, but also rarely acknowledges them (or Getbig), but MD will agree that the boards and the internet sites are a influence in disucssion, whether good or bad. And sometimes they absolutely get out of hand, in case, the Time Out Area, and being banned.
And yes - you don't have to look like a bodybuilder to be a fan. I can't beleive some of you think that? Have you ever been to an expo? At least 70-80% are the people are normall people who enjoy the sports. Jeez - how many people who like basketball play it, or baseball, or football. Get with the program and contribute.
-

Well you would think that guys are watching bodybuilders for inspiration to train, unless it's for a sexual reason, I don't understand why someone would be a fan and not work out.

Funny. I know quite a number of people who are fans, who don't work out. Perhaps because they like to see pleasing physique and the monster masses which, for many, are not attainable. Perhaps because one day they would like to be able to at least attain a fraction of what these pros of done. Perhaps because it gives them the inspiration to get to the gym one day, and train. Perhaps because you sometimes need the motivation. Perhaps because one day they trained and stopped.
Why would someone be a fan of football and not play? Or Soccer? Or Hockey?
-
Jeez, the more I hear about thie John Romano guy, the more I think he and I have a lot in common.
I also find Bethany oddly attractive. Any girl who can speak 7 languages and can do a full split while reciting the table of periodic elements is hot in my book!
-

Well I thought you were talking about guys that never have trained or had any desire to be muscular themselves.

The same reason there are basketball fans who don't play basketball or football fans who dont play football.

Hi, John ::)

how many special guests are there? what are the criteria to become a special guest?
Ron gave me that title...obviously I work at FLEX, and it was a choice between Special Guest and Expert, which people would have ragged on for only having a few posts and being listed as expert.

Awesome question. Ron, what is the criteria for 'special guest'. They get to read the VIP board, so it is quite an honor.

Yea but wouldn't the special guests be the only ones who could post on there? Probably nothing decent on that board.

Man, I want to preface what I am going to type here with this- I know that Peter Mcgough is an older man. But, that being said, so is Dave Draper, Clarence Bass and other guys who are still in great shape. It just seems kinda creepy when you have an old man, totally out of shape(and I would wager that he never was in shape) writing muscle worship articles and posing as the all-knowing writer of BBING. The whole Weider empire is just creepy to me. A bunch of business men who never have had physiques(Joe going to the extreme measures of photo shopping his head onto others' bodies in the mags ::)) BBing is one sport or industry where you need to play the game yourself to get credibility as the business figurehead, or magazine writer. Otherwise people assume you are either a con-man making money off of the bbers or a homosexual. Or both. :-X

How about $10,000

Well he isn't now. I was using "wager" kinda as a figure speech more than actually implying gambling about PM's physique. If he was in shape, and I mean bbing in shape, not just average, then post a clearly un-photo shopped pic and that will prove it. I'm not calling you a liar, or trying to flame PM or Flex, I just have a hard time believing the guy was ever in great shape.

Decent development, I take my earlier statements. I still think if he were in better shape now it would send a better message. But, I think the pic in the other thread proves he is not just a schmoe. I was proven wrong here.
-

It wouldn't obviously. But, bbing is an endevour where ones opinion seems to only be taken seriously if they have participated themselves. I think Martial Arts is the same way. If a writer for a Martial Arts magazine has no training experiance then there is a large section or readers who just will not respect his opinions or tips. That is just how it is, it doesn't reflect one's journalism skills.

This is completely irrational. If you agree with the point a writer is making, then you agree with it. If making good points doesn't impart credibility, then one's assignment of credibility is unimportant.

I didn't say this was even my personal opinion. It is not irrational. To prove my point, look how many bbing magazine readers(posters on this site) have posted in this thread in others showing no respect for PM. That is what I am saying. Look how many people have called him fat, out of shape, etc. If he were a football writer no one would care, bbing is different.

So when you said "old man", "creepy", "writing muscle worship articles" ,"i would wager, he never was in shape", "conman" "homosexual" etc. these were not your personal opinions?
So what was the last piece of his you read and what is your personal opinion of his writing ability?

He looks to be in pretty decent shape and that's the only thing anyone can really comment on since most of us don't know the guy on any level. I also happen to think he's a pretty decent writer, but bashers will bash.

I suspect, that if Peter set his mind, and workouts, to it, he could get into shape within a year or so, if he chose to.
I also suspect, that with a year's concentrated effort, no one here could match his ability to write, even if he chose to.
Peter came to America because Weider noticed the McGough writing in Pumping Press. It may be (I don't know) that at the time, Joe had never seen what Peter's appearance was. Peter has been in Weiderville several years now, Joe has seen him, and for some inexplicable reason, keeps him on the payroll.
Go figure.

PM is kept on the payroll because he's damn good at what he does, and what he does is run two very successful magazines—in fact, Muscle & Fitness is doing better now that he's taken over, than it has in years.

Joe Weider competed in weightlifting and did okay in Canada. Even Charles A. Smith, editor for Weider 1950-1957, but who remained objective about Joe, acknowledged that Joe, in certain lifts, was quite strong, so it is not accurate to say Joe never had any strength.

I think it's funny that you try to discredit Paul Anderson's strength claims, but will defend a bullshit artist like Joe Weider. Have you ever been on Weider's payroll?

I have checked on Anderson's feats and have defended his amateur record, which is quite certain and proveable. His pro status and feats are quite vague, and witnesses vanish under scrutiny, reported weights are lighter than claimed, etc. There is a thread on my forum inviting proof for some of his unsubstantiated feats. Feel free to join and provide the proof. So far, no one has- you'll be a first!

Come on man, I don't know PM personally but you know that some of the writers at flex are a little strange, maybe I should not have thrown PM in with them since I haven't heard anything about him, but some of those guys are not what they claim to be on their boards. I will leave it at that, I have heard this from a reliable source. I don't want to lamblast anyone personally here so i won't go into it. Just quit acting like all of the rumors about the Weider's and thier cohorts are'nt there for a reason.
-
Well that explains it.
If this is an example of what you deem proof to be, you had best ignore my invitation to defend Anderson's pro lifts.

In one post you attack PM, then you admit you know nothing about him, then you say you haven't heard anything about him, so you must have made it up?
What are the claims that these people are making on their boards? Be a little more specific.
Now some of the writers are "a little strange" because you heard it from "a reliable source". Presumably you haven't met any of them either? But you're prepared to believe rumors!
Rumors are there because people often prefer fiction because it's often more interesting than facts.

Why aren't you inviting proof for some of Weider's "unsubstantiated feats"? In an interview with Dr. Squat, he claimed a 600 deadlift for 5 reps. That's far less believable than anything Anderson did.

Peter McGough is a good writer and he looks to be in good shape in that picture but I disagree with one article in particular he wrote a couple of years back.
The link doesn't work for me, but was that the article where he was questioning the need for Ronnie to compete at a much heavier bodyweight because he had been too light the previous year?
-
Can you please show me some evidence to support your claim that Albert Beckles is born in 1938? I am not denying he was, but I have no evidence of his date of birth either way (1930 or 1938).
Without evidence your claim is meaningless.
I have written extensively on this, but in a nutshell:
Even Albert agreed with the 1938 birth timeline until 1984- he even asserted that those trying to claim he was older, were wrong. Then, after 1984, the story changed. Now he apparently prefers vagueness.
The early British magazines covering the period when he arrived in England, and covering the contests he entered, all support the younger timeline. Indeed, even when other men in the senior division were being complimented that at such older ages they were in shape (and he was in the contest) he was not mentioned as being as old as they- which he would have been if the 1930 timeline is correct.
In the piece I wrote for the cyberpump.com site this topic is covered in detail with quotes and references. I am not trying to also be vague- but the answers are detailed and lengthy. The text appears in the paysite at cyberpump, but I may transfer it to my site if you are really interested.

Why aren't you inviting proof for some of Weider's "unsubstantiated feats"? In an interview with Dr. Squat, he claimed a 600 deadlift for 5 reps. That's far less believable than anything Anderson did.
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/drsquat4.htm
Brian, I see you are using the ploy that most use when confronted with this situation- you change topics, to try to show that others have also not made the lifts claimed by them or for them. While that may be true or not true on a case by case basis- it proves or disproves nothing about the Anderson situation.
So, okay, I cannot prove that Weider deadlifted 600 even for one rep (I did not yet read the link you provided)- I must admit I had never heard that claim.
So, are you concluding that since Weider could not deadlift 600 for reps that Anderson could do all the pro lifts attributed to him? Are you aware of the lifts attributed to him? No sarcasm there- I have found many people have simply (like I did originally) believed what they first read with no serious investigative follow-up.
If you choose to believe Anderson's pro lifts, that's fine. If you care to present proof, come to my forum, where much text and a solid beginning is already in place including the triology I wrote for Iron Game History- which, by the way, no one has yet refuted with proof, settling instead for emotional distraction, and changing the subject.

Great post, Joe Roark!

Mentioning Paul Anderson and Wieder in the same conversation about weight lifting is comical. I would like an explanition for the pics that are seen from time to time in Weider's publication where he looks to have Arnold like size. Everyone knows this is fake. I have seen with my own eyes a pic where "Joe" is doing a most muscular, shown from the waist up, with Arnold like size. Everyone at my gym laughed when we saw it. Below the pic it said "Joe practiced what he preached" regarding the Weider principles. LOL.

You wouldn't say that to Joe's face ::)

Uh, and why do you think I would not? I am not a mean spirited person, nor do I have any real animosity towards him, so I would'nt start yelling it at him, but if you are implying that he is a man to be feared well then, LOL. Look, I have seen how you defend all pro bbers and IFBB officials on here, and I am not a pro hater.
I know some posters on here relentlessly bash Bob Chic and others, I do not want to do that. I just think that putting your head on someone else body and claiming it is real in a publication is pretty lame. If asked about it by Weider I would say the same, and Paul Anderson is an all time great in the strength world, Weider is not even close, that is why I said they should be discussed together.

Certainly Weider cannot compare to Anderson in the strength world, nor can Anderson compare to Weider in the publishing world.
I suppose how you define 'all time great in the strength world' is the key phrase. Within a few years of Paul's amateur retirement, his lifts were surpassed- in some cases by men of much lighter bodyweight. The same could be said of other great weightlifters, of course, so I do not know how 'all time great' fits any lifter whose lifts have been surpassed, unless you mean that for a period, each was top man. Certainly that is the case with Paul and many others. So each could be remembered for all time as a great lifter for a specific period ending when his lifts were surpassed. Then a new king arose.

I'm just joking with you ;D. Although I would laugh if Joe beat you up ;D.

If only Peter McGough would fire Julian "Mr. Thesaurus" Schmidt....
Speak on this Ron + Joe!
If I have to read "Brodnigagain (sp?)" again when a simple adjective like "massive, huge, or large" would do, I'm gonna be pissed.
Good writing = clear writing.

Sometimes it is good to be challenged! Expand your mind, man! ;D

I guess J. Schmidt is just a pet-peeve of mine. I've bitched about him before many times on getbig.
I was 1 of those geeks who played Scrabble as a kid, etc., + I'm obsessive about knowing the definition of every word in anything I read (thank goodness for internet dictionaries!), so my vocabulary's pretty decent, but I swear, I have to use a dictionary MORE often with Schmidt's articles than an article in the NYTimes, Economist, an academic journal, etc.
It's ridiculous.
Seriously, man, Good writing = Clear writing - this is a fundamental principle of writing.
Schmidt's writing is Garbage, plain + simple. Man should be fired + his Weider paychecks for the last 20 years retroactively pulled.
And he should be forced to write w/o an Internet/actual thesaurus - hell, even if he actually DOES know those polysyllabic, sesquepidalean words, there's STILL no reason to use them!
Read something by say William Safire, a NYTimes columnist - sure every know + then he uses a "big word" that's not that widely familiar to a college-educated audience, but it's only "every know + then", not every frekaing sentence!
Hell, pick any widely recognized as "smart" public person (Bill Clinton, Kissinger, Bill Gates, etc.) - their writing is 1000000% clearer and better than that fool Schmidt.
Can you tell that I really hate his writing?
Rant off!

Part of being "smart" is being able to communicate effectively and get your message across.
While Julian may deliver art/prose with his articles, most readers don't know what the hell he's talking about.

I agree that he is over the top with his use of obscure words ;D I would like to know how and why he started writing like that. It might be an interesting story.

Hmm, good point, Lucius.
Maybe there's a method to his madness.
Or maybe - probably - he's just a tool.

If I am the Joe mentioned here, okay, I will speak on this.
In my case, there are several writers whose work I scan quickly, not because of large words but because of small content. That goes for some on internet forums, as well as in magazines. If you are bothered by a writer, or by his style, you have the option of not reading his writing.
Interestingly, no one is suggesting that Julian's work is ghost-written. :)

Joe Roark-
Your post was not very informative.
Schmidt is 1 reason I canceled my 7 year subscription to Flex magazine a while back.
If you actually have some insight into Mr. Schmidt's writing style, why he writes that way, etc., please let us know.
tx,
bb doc.

I have no insight into opinions, and I prefer not to argue over opinions.

Julian's writing belongs in a scientific journal or a poetry book - not a mainstream periodical whose reading level is at the 8th grade level (this is not an insult- most major newspapers are also geared for the 8th grade level).
MD manages to deliver scientific content using everyday terms. WHy can't FLEX do that? I know it feels good to use really big words- but if you're turning off readers, you're generating more grammatical masturbation and less reader satisfaction. And why are you in business if not for reader satisfaction?
-
At least his writing style is something different. But, then again, I haven't read one of his articles in years. I might not be so amused by it now.

I would laugh if Joe beat anyone up. :D I'm pretty sure I could take him though. But with all the bashing I have done in this thread I will say, Joe is one the best business men that ever lived. He took something that basically had no market, and turned it into a multi-million dollar business. He was also smart enough to know what he had when he met a guy Arnold.

I agree. Building a "sport" from pretty much nothing is impressive. I admire him for getting out while the getting was good.
