Peter North said in his podcast with TT BOY on YouTube that he got more muscular up until age 45 or 50. I guess that's a benefit in being an ectomorph: you have nowhere to go but UP.
Pro bodybuilding is probably THE most profound example of something where you have nowhere to go but DOWN.
Literally from days - even HOURS of being in contest condition, you are already declining. It's absolutely unsustainable.
What I'm trying to do personally is stay at a level where I always look that way. Ditto for strength. I'll try to push my lifts as high as possible, but I want to maintain a level that I can maintain for a decade or more. What Hulkotron said about an "everyday health look - maintainable without boatloads of gear." ;D
Paul's physique was NEVER sustainable. Never, ever.
He had nowhere to go but DOWN.
I can guarantee you, Paul can't bench press 225 now. In 2005, he wrote an article for MUSCLEMAG where he said he wasn't able to bench press 225, when he started training again.
Mike:
You are about the same height as Paul. Did you ever think you would look better than him?
?
-
Standing “relaxed” from the front, Paul won any contest, anywhere.
Wide for days, and, besides Strydom, the greatest wheels ever on a tall (six-plus) man.
If he’d have impressed as much from the rear (no homo), and could competently pose, no one could have touched him, at his best.
He’s Example One of how genetics, structural and gear-response, is KING.
-
It's not so much that he's thin, he looks gaunt and perpetually sad:(. Even when he's happy he looks sad.
-
Did I ever think that I would look better than Paul Dillett? (Just to type out this sentence made me laugh! …whether it’s true or not that just sounds like such Blasphemy! …. I’d get laughed at and or punched in the face if I uttered that sentence back in the day!)

Fortress:
I seem to recall Paul writing for MUSCLEMAG around the time he came back for the 2006 Montreal Pro [around the time of the pictures below, which were Before & After CELL-TECH]. Being Canadian, and so involved in the bodybuilding scene, had you Paul in person numerous times?
How about Greg Kovacs? If so, can a comparison between the two mass monsters be made?

LOL!!!!! 😂
True words have NEVER been spoken.

I’ve only once been in a gym with Paul when he was working out. Strangely, this was around the time you mention. He was doing his “comeback”, but sadly, would never reclaim the physique he had prior to “losing it all”. Still huge, but nowhere close. This is always the case in bodybuilding: You let off the gas, lose a dramatic amount of size and strength, and then try to get back to where you were, it’ll not happen, ever.
Loutard might be the exception. But weirdly, his comeback physique was an entirely different one from his glory-days one. Very bizarre.
Anyway …
Yeah, Dillett was a completely uninspiring trainer with what appeared to be no heart.
Just a through-the-motions-with-a-crapload-of-gear-in-his-system bodybuilder.
I have worked out with Kovacs. He was beyond monstrous and strong, but nowhere near the strength advertised by MuscleTech, which I knew, as its owner was a once-friend who thought nothing of lying about, well, everything.
Greg wasn’t long for this world. Just too extreme and too over the top.
But WHAT a monster.
P.S. I’ve stood beside Greg weighing himself at a full 385 pounds. And very lean. But with a monstrous gut … albeit, pulled in a flexed, with a TIGHT set of abs.

Kovaks looked like if a school of piranhas had their way with
him all that would be left with would be a three foot wide
skeleton...
seriously, you'd think his bones had to be a yard wide.

Yet another top pro seeking his advice.
Guy was a fucking genius!

Seems like he's been through some shit and trauma in his life
Maybe had to do shit to get ahead in bodybuilding etc
Maybe lost loved ones / familymembers
Maybe suffering from some illness
-
Crazy!
Mentzer wondering how big Paul could have gotten training (s)HIT.

Mikes genetics, shape, structure, response is nothing compared to Paul
I’ve always said the best bbers are the ones that started out skinny/lean with elite response to gear, nothing more
Now the top competitors had all those traits, longevity, being able to withstand the heavy gear with minimal side effects, top muscle bellies and shape, structure, those are the elite ones that wins shows

When i was young i met dillet. I asked for a pic. I said show me your..like pose it for a pic..anyway he refused because i think he lowered the dose and wasnt as big as he usually looked. So he put his arm up on me around my shoulder and laughed which was odd lol

dude on the far right ???
-
Is it true that Paul Dillett mainly did pump sets?
-
Saw him walking across from the hotel to the convention. Spotted him right away since he looked exactly the same since the 90’s. One of the greatest posers of all-time
-
I met him once, i even got a signed pic, he was massive his arms were insanely massive
-
He needs to at least do pushups or something basic.
It's like these guys completely give up when they have to drop the steroids.
-
While he has clearly lost size you really shouldn't judge someone physique when they are in a suit. For all we know Dillet could be 4% bodyfat under that and in the best cardiovascular shape of his life. Meanwhile Bob is probably 30% with clogged arteries and a failing kidney.
If you asked a Dr based on this pic which 60-year-old man looks healthier every single one is going to say Dillet.
-
I wonder sometimes who would win in a fight, prime Dillet or prime Ferrigno
-
"of Peace", as well.
-
Dillet used very small amounts of gear. Just a couple of Winston cc's a week, that he stored on top of the refrigerator. Just ask Lee Priest for details.

Like many athletes (football, wrestling), after the competition years are done they quit entirely. They need the sport or drive to compete for motivation and have none when the glory days are done.

So true. I can't get over the the fact I look better than Ronnie Coleman.

I'm sitting here watching Conan the Barbarian and the scene where they say "He was bred to the finest stock" came on and got me thinking about this thread.
I hope Dillett was spreading those awesome genes as much as possible for future bodybuilding generations. Extremely rare.

Good! This also answers my other question "what the hell was he even doing there at the O looking like that?" Wouldn't it be somewhat painful and embarrassing? On some level I guess he's bodybuilding royalty still.

from wiki
Dillett founded the World Beauty Fitness & Fashion Competition (WBFF) in 2007. ... The competition judges one's overall beauty and marketability.
