Davis enjoyed a successful career on the bodybuilding stage that led to many titles. Unfortunately, he was forced to retire after battling kidney failure. He would receive dialysis three times a week leading up to a kidney transplant in January 2009. ::)
I still don't understand what exactly happens to the kidneys when you're juicing hard. Can someone explain ???

It’s nice to see that both Vince Goodrum’s were included.

Damn that's nasty. Also IIRC Bostin Llyod died of kidney failure too. Crazy how this guy was much more bigger than Bostin but still lived longer.
Which one is he? They all look the same
The one seated lol
He had a tremendous physique and a tremendous thong too :D

Taking the drugs will eventually catch up to you.

Goodrum never misses an opportunity to take part in a white party. 2 Goodrums is twice the fun.

I Knew Shaun & a couple of other UK pro's back then.

From what I recall, the oral steroids can be hard on the kidneys.

Not a doctor but I am on getbig. If you inject oil it has to be eliminated by the body. Yes, injecting vegetable oil is a real risk to health. You can eat it but not inject it into a muscle where it will end up in your blood stream. Your kidneys will get clogged up trying to filter that crap out. The other mechanism is high blood pressure. You can't gain 40-50lbs of bloated muscle without increasing your blood pressure. Add to that blood pressure spikes through lifting on top of it. Like Wes said your liver and kidneys filter out crap meaning bodybuilding drugs. Add too much garbage to your body and it has to get out of your system somehow. Another theory I got is that muscle damage is also filtered out by the kidneys as in Rhabdomyolysis. Wonder if there is a mechanism where drug use and training leads to this? We will never know because no one is studying this subculture of drug using men posing in thongs to music for screaming men.

14 years after kidney transplant seems to be in the average lifespan range for bodybuilders that get them.
Rob Schuh, who was a decent NPC level guy and later, one of the kings of mid-late 90s bodybuilding chat got his in 98, died 2012 -

I remember running the numbers for a couple of other strength athletes that got them, and they were in that range too, give or take a year.

That's a glitch in the matrix, when you see two black cats or two black Goodrums.

I saw Venom V at the finals of the Olympia while simultaneously live-streaming on YouTube from the comfort of his home.

Nope. The latter of those two are what is known as "A bitch in the Gaytrix".

No. Gear and being huge raise your blood pressure which damages your kidneys. It’s like hooking up a fire hose to a straw and blasting it high flow. The straw becomes damaged and eventually fails.

Davis

Was he on the Ernie Taylor protocol?

I honestly thought Shaun had passed years ago ……..( I remember his kidney issues / and heard he took crazy amounts of stuff! Including SEO)

If he took SEO then it is much more likely this is the cause than AAS.
there is research from Denmark showing how SEO wrecks kidney. Short version: The oil acts like a form of "d vitamin" enhancing calcium uptake in the gut that ruins kidneys.
They have a clinic specifically treating patients who have used SEO
It is the kidneys that fail. And it is due to the SEO
I have no idea about AAS and kidneys
But...where are all the pro guys from 70s and 80s with failing kidney? They did not exactly go light either. I am not familiar with 80s guys with failed kidneys
-
If someone used paraffin oil/SEO then look to that as the main reason
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29599408/
Results: At admission, all patients had moderate-to-severe hypercalcemia with suppressed PTH levels and impaired renal function. Calcitriol levels were within the normal range or slightly elevated. Follow-up measurements showed marked hypercalciuria with nearly normal levels of bone turnover markers. A correlation was found between levels of peptidyl dipeptidase and calcitriol (R = 0.812, P = 0.050). Treatment with antiresorptive agents seemed less effective than glucocorticoids, which resulted in a significantly lowering of ionized calcium levels and improved renal function, although no patients were cured by this treatment. Immunosuppression with azathioprine or mycophenolate may have a glucocorticoid-saving effect. One patient had surgery with removal of affected muscle tissue, without any apparent effect on plasma calcium levels.
Conclusion: The hypercalcemia and associated hypercalciuria seems to be due to an intestinal hyperabsorption of calcium. It remains to be elucidated, whether an increased calcitriol synthesis within granulomas is the only (main) mechanism by which intestinal calcium absorption is increased. Glucocorticoids seem most appropriate as the first choice for treatment. Bodybuilders should be warned against use of intramuscular oil injections (and other substances), as this may have severe adverse health consequences.

Kidneys trying to filter non-organic compounds 24 x 7 cannot be good...
SEO (and tons of other oils in heavy gear usage, orals, etc) = recipe for DISASTER!

Probably from high BP. Could also be from things he took in addition to the steroids - pain killers etc.
-
Maybe if he had "done his bloodwork" more often he could have made it to 60.

Honestly I was thinking the same thing; I thought he passed a decade ago. :-\

Guys in the 70s did not stay on 365 days a year.
Usually they only did one or two cycles a year of 6-10 weeks.
Even so some guys had bad side effects.
Like most drugs, side effects are dose dependent.
Ibuprofen can mess you up if you overdue it. Read the label.
Once the promoters came up with a series of multiple competitions in a given year I think it got out of hand because bbs were staying on too long.
