Back in 1991 & 1992 Flex Magazine had a lot of smaller articles with Matt.

Albrect, Yates, Haney, Labrada, Ray, Taylor, Levrone, Cotrell, and Matarazzo had lots of covers and big articles.

But Matt and Tommy Varga had some good coverage despite being amateurs.

At least he gave up BB relatively young to get a real job. Otherwise we’d be mentioning him and Matt McCarver in the same breath.

Problems of the heart are the number one killer of man. Exercise helps like cardio because it lowers the risk but no one is immune. Just heard for a marathon friend of mind that just had heart surgery. Another friend said his cholesterol was 131 and he had to have a stent put in for a clog.  Nobody can explain why lowering cholesterol lowers the risk of a clog but then why do people with low cholesterol have clog heart attacks?  I don't think it's as easy as saying high LDL and low HDL's.  Might have to do with inflammation as in C reactive protein.

I think most of it is genetics. There are also obviously other factors like blood sugar levels, smoking, and diabetes which over time play a role.

When I hear about the example of someone with a cholesterol of 131 that had to have a stent, I do wonder how long was their cholesterol at 131? Did they live a bad lifestyle for 20 years, and then lower their cholesterol after decades of a high fat or high sugar diet? I think that person would be at a different risk than someone who kept a low cholesterol throughout their adult life. That said, I do agree that it isn't all about LDL and HDL.

Forget cholesterol and instead concentrate on fibrinogen:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8745133/ (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8745133/)

"The risk of coronary events, including sudden cardiac death, increased with fibrinogen plasma concentrations, which remained low in the case of high cholesterol, as long as the fibrinogen concentration remained low "

Bay..in 1993, McLaughlin competed in the Light-Heavyweight division and won first place at the NPC North American Championships ….. we were all following Dorian’s lead and Matt used insulin and GH and blew out his physique (his gut was pretty big) that was it …. No coming back from that … but he was an amazing bodybuilder! ( a group of us went to New York to the Olympia to see Ronnie beat Flex and we had a blast!/ great memories)

Lot of guys suffered similar fates, including Dorian he never got his waist or shape back to 93, no doubt GH and insulin can build size and fullness but unlike the anabolic only era, GH and Insulin also blow out the trunk, most guys post 12 months use never get their waists back.
Bodybuilding was a far better and healthier sport IMO when guys looked small in clothes and grew on stage, the sport was always about the illusion of shape and size prior to 94, afterwards and ever since its been about the actual size. Much bigger but better, I dont think so.
